I think it's actually pretty foolish of people to buy Blu-Ray players and Blu-Ray Discs in general when DVDs are perfectly fine. Seriously, there's nothing wrong with a DVD, and why should consumers buy the more expensive format when most of them aren't even able to tell Blu-Rays and DVDs apart? The only reason I even have two Blu-Ray players is because one came with my PS3 and the other came with my middle-of-the-range laptop. I have maybe ten Blu-Ray Discs in total, half of them given to me as presents. Half the fansubs and Crunchy-rips I watch are in 480p, because I simply don't need 720p.

My point is, don't treat 480p as crap, and don't write off DVDs just yet. As Polycell said, they aren't obsolete until consumers say they're obsolete.

(Man, this thread really has gone a long way from High School DxD, huh?)

DVD is pretty much dead for the anime market, though. Some high profile anime releases in Japan aren't even getting DVD releases anymore, like Horizon and Fate/Zero. I'd guess within about 3 years, only stuff aimed at female and mainstream audiences will still be getting DVD releases, since theres little point to even bother making a DVD version when it sells 1/10th of what the BD version does. And as time goes on, that number should dwindle even further down.

This makes me wonder though... If there are no DVDs being made, and Japan is still all paranoid about reverse importing...

Will we be getting anything but dub only BDs here?

I doubt it (it would basically mean the death of the R1 anime industry) but I'd bet that the price of R1 releases would increase.

Japan is about 5-10 years ahead of us, technologically, that lead will likly increase as the US goes through another long generation of austerity ...

This discussion is ironic -- as I was reading on slashdot of sales starting in select areas (Germany, Japan), of 4K resolution dunno if that is 4000p or what? But these discussions about small change formats will look awfully quaint in some number of years...

Meanwhile, let all go be happy with our 640K PCs that have all the memory anyone would ever need! Wink
