This is kinda cool to hear, I like her music. Also I know she's a anime/manga fan but I wasn't aware she like One Piece. I wasn't also aware that Oda was also a fan of her music. Guess having mutual interest can lead to this. Anyway, I hope her music will work for this film.

So Avril Lavigne is a fan of One Piece? That makes her awesome in my book! Having Oda admit that he is a fan of her music is also nice to hear and it's been a long time since I have heard anything from Avril and it's nice to hear her contribute to the latest One Piece movie and hope it works out well for everyone.

An International mutual fan artistic exchange? That's pretty cool! And considering that Avril Lavigne is engaged to Nickelback's lead singer Chad Kroeger it would be interesting if the song "How You Remind Me" mentioned in the article was Avril's take on her fiance's song. I like Nickelback's songs (and a few Lavigne songs-don't judge me!) and I'd love to hear her take on it.
Also, I haven't read much of One Piece, but "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett would be a fitting song for Nami and Nico Robin. Those covers could work very well in a One Piece movie.

I wish celebs would stop getting involved with anime in any way. Don't mention you like it or get a role in it (Ghibli flims I don't care if you mess up).

Great news, I used to listen to her songs a lot (they're catchy). Didn't know she was a fan of anime and manga, makes her cool in my books. I don't get what all the hates about, could someone fill me in?

I don't really have an opinion on Avril Lavigne I can only remember hearing her first big song (skater boy) because it was really popular when I was in high school (I assume there has been more than one hit). I didn't really like the song, but I'm not quite a big enough jerk to say she sucks based off of one song. But the main question for me is how will this affect the NA licensing prospect for the film?

a lot of people are getting pissed despite the majority of japanese anime themes being done by cheeseball japanese pop singers just as awful as lavigne. i mean, i hate her music, but i find a lot of the anime themes just as awful and grating--despite there being plenty of amazing bands and singers in the japanese music industry.
also, oda 'being a fan of her music' is very likely just him being a traditionally polite and grateful japanese adult. also, oda probably realizes it' important to show his support with a foreigner having such an important role in the biggest series ever in japan. there are always gonna be japanese who go, 'what? they've got a foreigner singing the theme for our series'?! oda's personal approval goes a long well to quell that reaction among fans.
