Yes you're right, the statistics aren't accurate, but likewise none of the statistics for any of the countries are "accurate" because there is always a percentage of crimes that aren't reported. In the case of Japan's statistics, you often have to multiply it by ten or twenty times just to get it somewhere close to the American equivalent. I'm fully willing to concede that not all crimes are reported in Japan, like any other country, but until you can present some sort of credible study capable of estimating the actual crime rate for the country, these statistics are all we can rely on. In regards to the actual article, I'd like to point out that CEDAW is only a committee within the UN and does not constitute a consensus opinion within the UN. Seeing as to how Equality Now started this mess with Rapelay and have been openly petitioning the UN regarding this matter for a while now, it's entirely reasonable to assume this is just them caving under Equality Now's copy/paste letter writing campaign. To which I would like to encourage everyone to participate in our own copy/paste letter writing campaign: http://www.yestofreedom.org/send-letters/ tl;dr: The letter has already been written, just print, signature, and mail. |

Aww, has Agnes-chan dropped her rattle again?
Someone should give her some warm milk and put her to bed again which should hopefully keep her quiet for a few months. |

Ah yeah, they'd be great, but somehow I think they'd be limited to just dealing with tentacle monsters from space. This act put out by the UN will go no where in my opinion. The UN has no real power to force any country to do anything, especially if such an act will affect Japan's current economy. |

Eroge/hentai is also sexist to both male and female. Also, people who play these do inspired to do crime. So, I applaud the UN.

Anything if viewed by the right angle can probably been seen as sexist, and where's your proof that people who watch them are inspired to do crime? |

If the banning happens its going to make it worse than before. Its like the shiny red button that say "Do Not Push" and someone is gonna do it. The more you restrict people from a certain thing they want the more they will want it and go to extremes to get it. Prohibition, nuff said.

Cue the anime haters saying they will support UN's action against explicit erotic games and also claiming that manga and anime are just as dangerous as these game in 3...2...1.

It's a dud. 97% of the world hasn't heard about this, and 3% that has doesn't really give a crap. Honestly, I don't see why everyone's getting in a snit. Well, no. I do, actually. It's because getting in a snit about things is how people who are too lazy to actually do things about "social injustice" convince themselves they matter. But my point is, why should I respect the authority of an international organization that can't even get member nations to pay their dues? They've clearly never experienced a hentai/eroge where a guy gets raped.
Sexist? There's better targets to choose from, like on their own turf. Not on some small island thousands of miles away. |

I agree. I love playing GTA and other violent games but it doesn't mean I'm going to kill someone and committ other crimes. It all depens on the parents. If they see their child acting violently with little to no reason then maybe he/she needs to get help. My Mom didn't allow my brother and I to play those types of games when we were kids. By the time my brother was 16 he was playing them and I was too (at 14). I am the adverage graduated college student looking to get a job, watches sports, and has a loving girlfriend. I turned out fine. |

Well in all fairness, When Japan is trying to develop its culture into a commodity for international investment, these bits of their culture don't help in making that viable in a global market that is starting to colour itself as "ethical". This is nothing new as Japan has been trying to learn to be embarassed about its way of life since the Edo period after Commodore Parry ripped the roof off their nation.

This is porn and porn has been urged to be banned in territories for years. This isn't new.

As much as I hate to say this (I really do hate pornography involving real people) porn should not be banned. For the most part, it's a healthy, safe outlet for people to enjoy their sexual fantasies. I agree that it does exploit, sexualize and objectify women, but there are many things in our culture that do that, and there's no discussion of them being banned. Not to mention that it also does sexualize and objectify men, but you never hear anyone mention that. As long as it's involving consenting adults, and there is a way to provide counseling to pornography addicts (this is nothing against porn. There are many, many things that a person can become addicted to now) then there's no reason to ban pornography. Banning honestly does nothing. If you educate people to make an informed decision, I think that works a world better than simply saying "No, you can't do this" Also, that petition letter is quite clever, going at it from a feminist angle. Saying that a woman's right to express herself sexually is being taken away by banning these games? Smart. Last edited by Quark on Fri Aug 28, 2009 10:42 am; edited 1 time in total |

It's interesting. Everything but this one section, in my opinion, seems to be right on the ball. It's important that Japan start re-evaluating how they handle social issues (something that's just largely ignored), but I don't understand why exactly game and anime pornography was brought up. It's a sign of a larger problem but it's not the cause.
