The "fanbashing" is pretty funny. It's neither overboard nor obsessive. Just funny little jibes.

And right on to Zac for what he said above about the teabaggers. President Carter was half right earlier in the week when he commented that much of the anti-Obama animus is rooted in racism. He was incorrect, however, in basing his remarks on the mid-20th century liberal notion of equality of ability. Very few of the teabaggers would argue that Obama is a stupid man who is unqualified to serve as President of the United States. Instead, the vehemence of the feeling against Obama is rooted, at least in part, on the perception of him as some sort of Other. Hence all of the language about "taking our country back," associating him with political ideologies that have never enjoyed mainstream support in America, and talk of him being a foreign-born Muslim. Black people have always been the Other to white America and having a man of African descent in the Oval Office is making a lot of people who are not consciously racist uncomfortable in very deep recesses of their psyches.

That's not to say that nobody opposes Obama on policy grounds. Making such a claim would be ludicrous. But it does account for the suddenness and furor of the opposition. Conservatives, unlike people on the left, aren't known for their willingness to get out into the streets and march. But only months after his election and with no major policy changes to his credit, Obama has seen tens of thousands of his opponents' followers attend mass demonstrations. It took Bush a Supreme Court-decided election, an unprecedented attack on civil liberties, and a war--costly both in blood and treasure--based on lies to stir up this sort of activity among the notoriously protest-happy left. Obama simply had to take office.

Anyway, I love the podcast. It's actually what inspired me to finally register a forums account. A shame about not being able to record in the pro studio anymore, though. The DIY production is respectable, but the new equipment just doesn't capture the full timbre of Justin's beautiful manvoice.

The perils of opening this can of worms. Is this really an anime site? I commented on the Answerman column that contained this question awhile back. My reasoning for the "surprising" number of conservative views found on message boards was really no different than any genre. In the Ultima Online MMORPG world, I was surpised at the number of conservatives that I found among my friends, granted most conservative I ran into were ex military.
When I first joined the internet, in the circles I ran in, there was the liberal point of view and nothing else. Conservatives slowly came out, and were deluged with stuff trying to make them see the error of their ways. Once it was determined that nothing really bad could happen to you for having a contrarian view on the internet, more felt comfortable expressing their beliefs. It is just a message board after all, anything bad that happens to you can easily be brushed off as it does not really mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Anyway, great cast again, look forward to it every week.

(sick examples)

If we're going into pull the ugliest examples from a protest, then the opposition to the Iraq War or Afghanistan War looked hate-filled and anti-Semitic. It didn't take too much to find protesters with signs delighting in the death of Bush, hoping for a heart attack from Dick Cheney, assuming the Jews knew about the attacks beforehand, Bush planned 9/11, or Bush knew about 9/11 because the Jews planned it. More than a few people reported seeing "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" being sold at war protests. If all you're going to do is pull the sickest examples out, we could be here all day....

...and we'd prove nothing. Those opposed to the Wars had many, many valid points that got drown out by the ugly people on their side. Those opposed to the health plan (or Pres. Obama's performance in general) had valid points as well, and the disgusting signs and protesters are hindering them as well.

Yeah yeah, I'm sure there are a handful of non-insane racist conservatives who attended the event

Polls show that about 12% of people think the protesters are racist. Even the White House doesn't think the protests are about race. Sure, it makes it all easier to dismiss, but it isn't an accurate portrayal.

Because right now the public face of the teabag movement is an angry racist screaming diabetic holding up a defaced picture of the president with a bunch of nonsensical conflicting "scary" misspelled political ideologies like "FASISM SOCALEST".

And the "face" of anime fans is fat dudes in skirts. Are they majority of anime fandom? No, but they get attention and so if you're not there, that's what you see. Hey, remember when people hoped that one day the morons doing commentary could bother to look past "La Blue Girl" and "Pokemon" to see that anime was more than just porn and fighting animals?

Kenotic: Except the anti-Bush people didn't bring guns to his speeches or use anti-Semitic catch-phrases and connotations in reference to Ari Fleischer when they were on tv. Nor did they have fits when Bush went to a Holocaust memorial the way that the Repugs went ballistic when Obama criticized a cop for racially-profiling a Harvard professor. Oh, and anti-Semitism's a problem in both parties. Rolling Eyes

You want respect? Lay off the cheap shots:

explain why what went on at the tea party was racist, or did you just learn that word from MSNBC?

OH SNAP! Yes, I really did just learn that word from MSNBC. C'mon.
How can anyone expect to be taken seriously when they want to operate on such a grade school level. I know you are but what am I. Razz

Murasakisuishou wrote:

Another irony alert:
So when you say you are tired of *every single media outlet*...*perpetually attacking* *your beliefs* with *sweeping generalizations*...

If *that* doesn't sound like a sweeping generalization, I don't know what does.

I get the the feeling you are PO'd and want the ones you think are at fault to have a taste. However, what goes around comes around...and around and around...etc... and we all gotta look in the mirror for the blame eventually.

Oh, like just marching in and calling someone racist without backing up your claim isn't a cheap shot to begin with? That's pretty much what the poster I was responding to did.

I'm upset about this because I was there in D.C., it was one of the most amazing, inspiring things I've ever seen, and the whole event (as Zac's post illustrates) was disgustingly misrepresented by most mainstream media channels. When it gets to the point where prominent political figures, many of whom are supposed to be representing the citizenry, are painting an entire group of people as racists just because they can't be bothered to get their facts straight and they themselves rely on sensationalistic journalism, things have gone too far.

New forum rule, even when ANN is stupid enough to discuss politics in its editorial, politics is still off topic on the forums. You may discuss it in the comunity forum (if you have access), but nowhere else.

The next person to argue politics will be banned for a week.

I am aware of how utterly unfair it is for us to discuss politics in the editorial, and attack a particular political demographic, and then say that you aren't allowed to discuss it in the forum, but unfortunately the "fair" alternative results in really unsavory "discussions."

There hasn't been a truly accurate portrayal of anything political in this thread.....because there isn't one! Just a bunch of random bias "News Networks" and random bias polls that cater to whatever people want to hear/read/believe. American politics have been lowered to, pick a side and bitch about the other(though I think some could argue successfully it's been that way for a while).

I am well aware of the current state of politics in this country and as a responsible citizen I do my best to stay informed. But I also need an escape which is why I come here. Might I suggest, if people want to continue pointless political bickering, they just PM each other.

Back on actual topic. I am enjoying these casts very much, I have never took much interest in the inner workings of the anime industry(I guess that's what you call it). The insight of Justin has been much appreciated as someone who once worked for CPM, and the back-and-forth with Zac has a fun comedy duo vibe to it. I look forward to the next cast.

P.S. Sorry if I offended anyone with my little political rant. There is a time and place for this kind of "discussion", it's just my opinion that place isn't on an anime board.

[allowed, would have been in progress when I posted -t]

Very sorry tempest, had I seen your post first I wouldn't have bothered with the first part of my post, thank you for stepping in.

Slow news weeks are dangerous things. And some topics are a bit too infectious which I'm guilty of too.

And I can't believe Zac doesn't like Bleach. Just cause its shonen? Sad It actually has decent filler arcs too... okay 50/50 so far but more creative then other series. And come on, the swords transform into better or bigger ones! As a guy you can't not at least kind of like that.

Whoa, when did I say that? I said I haven't seen it.

Which isn't true, I saw the first 5 or 6 episodes and got distracted. Seemed like fun, just never got around to seeing more.

I got a laugh when they were talking about the "filthiest stuff we've ever discussed on the show". I really like how Zac disclaims the views on the show don't reflect ANN. I can relate to Zac not watching certain reality shows because I don't really watch much other TV (especially those dreaded reality shows) other than anime and the occasional show I watch channel surfing.

Justin, I agree with you on the autograph thing.

Like you said, I'll take an signed something or another if it's given to me, but I'm not going to idolize it, nor will I ask someone for an autograph. It would feel creepy and awkward.
