Well, with user-submitted stuff, and the overall breath and dearth of anime monsters, characters, etc. out there from over 50 years of production, it can be sometimes impossible to know if something is being ripped off.

I am sure they will issue a formal apology, an hopefully the parent company will let it go at that because they are using user-submitted ideas.

Yeah, I think this will just result in more research before hand rather than any major legal action.

Just out of curiosity, is the name of the monster spelled the same way in Japanese between Dragon Quest and Toriko?

I hope this can be settled with research. If the person who submitted this indeed copied this from Square Enix, then Shueisha and Shimabukuro-sensei shouldn't be held responsible, granted if Shueisha has it's own in house researching department. ( Remember when 2chan claimed that Slam Dunk's Inoue had copied NBA photographs for his manga?) Shimabukuro has already had one series canceled because of an incident on his part, I hope Toriko doesn't get canceled because of someone else mistake.

I hope this scandal doesn't affect Kinnikuman, which has relied on reader-submitted characters since 1979.

If Squeenix decides to pursue this, either litigation or forcing removal, I wonder if this has any implications for the tons of Squeenix doujinshi material (bought and sold), including things like music out there.

The way I see that is this: how many different ways to draw a basketball player? Not many. You need inspiration after a while.

How original is Dragon Quest to begin with? Dragons, wood monsters, knights in armor, they all look the same to be honest.

But see that logic could be used for other things to like, well that person looks the same as this one and so forth.

Best to wait until more light in shined on this before making judgements on whether honest mistake or copying.
