Well... no offence to anyone who knows the guy, but... he's a pervert. It's completely wrong and unjustifiable to have that manga in the first place... I hope people understand, because it's just wrong to me - lolicon or shotacon.
However, we don't know the full story - if it was manga that was licensed by some hentai label, or imported directly from Japan... If so, I'd much rather see the creators or the distributors punished, rather than a guy who purchased it. Sounds strange, but to me, that would be a more just decision.
Though on another note, is the post not private anymore?

I could swear there was a time where if you bullshitted around with people's freedom to think and express what they wanted, they actually did something about it. And when there wasn't, it was called "the past".

so your basicly saying perversion a Thought should be a crime? as to this whole sittuation even though there isn't a precedent for future cases like this I don't doubt that more cases similar to this or like this will sprout up due to people trying to throw others in prison over thought, just have to say this since someone mentioned media mail serches I've looked in my area's post office and I've never seen any notice stating any media mail search requirements. oh ottervin sorry incase I miss read your post waking up early isn't one of my strong points

This is not good. Why should the government have the right to decide that "obscene media" should not exist?
What is illegal about making drawings? If someone wrote a book featuring graphic descriptions of child rape, there would be enormous outrage if the government tried to censor it. So how does drawing a picture suddenly make it wrong, and make it okay for people to be jailed over it?

Perhaps this is true, but it's just as wrong for the state to be able to jail someone based on it's opinion of obscene (it is an opinion because by the government's own admission there is no objective definition of obscene).
Do you believe pornography should be illegal? What about virtual (drawn) pornography that doesn't involve actual humans engaged in sexual acts? What if the participants in a pornographic drawing appear to be underage? What if the underage sexual act isn't actually shown it's only discussed? Can a thought or an idea be a crime?

Therein lies the problem. It's wrong to YOU.
The postal service felt the manga was obscene material, reported it, and now an INNOCENT person goes to jail, pays a fine, and is branded a child molester (despite charges being dropped - public opinion's idiotic).
Now, your homework: define "obscene", because by my definition, cartoons, art, books, or other fictional works can never be obscene.
What the hell gave the right of a postal employee to determine what's obscene?
Come back when you have an answer. This should make for great entertainment.

Aw, man. I guess it's domestically produced adult manga for me. Can't trust the govt. to not intercept my private mail from Japan in search of an excuse to bust into my home accuse me of being a child pornographer and ruin my life forever, over drawings.
This must be what is like to live in North Korea.

Agreed.
Funny thing is, this whole obscenity law that dictates that obscene material cannot me transported through the mail was passed in the early seventies, when the US was going through another moral panic. It's great to know that a 30 year old law is still relevant in today's society!
George Orwell must be rolling in his grave...
Well, at least there is one guy who is fighting the obscenity law. And by the looks of it, I wouldn't be surprised if it hits the Supreme Court. it's already on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

He probably means "so that we can look them up and decide for ourselves whether or not this would deserve legal action." I suggested the same thing in one of these threads, IIRC.
But it doesn't matter. This is the kind of issue where people have already decided their opinion based not on the objective facts of the case but on how scared they are of someone taking their manga away and forcing them to make do with trashy vampire novels instead. Any evidence presented will be interpreted to support exactly what the observers want it to support.

The U.S. goverment is stupid. I learn that over the years. The post office should be sued for looking at the guy's package. I know i'll be tick if that happen to me.

This whole thing just seems sad to me. I could understand if they found actual child porn on his computer but to give him this kind of sentence over fictional depictions of minors engaged in sexual activity seems wrong to me.
This man, although some would view him as nothing but a pervert, was a normal functioning member of society. I can only imagine what he will have to go through if he has to serve his complete sentence, not to mention he will be in his 50's by the time he gets out. And then when he finally does get out he will be a broken man. He will probably build up a great disdain and hatred for society and most likely won't be able to go back to living the way he used to.
The worst part of all this is, if the government get it's way there will be many more people who will have to go through this as well. Freedom is dead.
