I wonder if these rather decent-level tier Aniplex titles are another one of those "packaging deals" so FUNi could get the bigger sought Aniplex titles like say Kara no Kyokai or Kuroshitsuji.

Possibly.

I would be all for that, Kara no Kyoukai. has been a great trip so far

As for the topic at hand, I must say that Funi has done it again. Birdy the Mighty: Decode and Decode 2 were very good series and Sekirei was also extremely fun and entertaining. I'd buy all of them.

I already have the FMP series but them getting them could possibly mean more FMP licensed by Funimation if any more series ever get off the ground.

[Sekirei is] Pokemon with hot women; I'll definitely considering owning it.

LOL. In a way, that's a great way to describe it - though they definitely make the point that really treating them as pokemon and just collecting them is a rather low thing to do. In any case, as ecchi shows go, it's quite good. The characters are interesting and actually have some depth - particularly for an ecchi show. As others have pointed out, the characters' breasts tend to be far to large, but other than that it looks good. If you're not into ecchi, you definitely won't be interested in it. If you're into ecchi or are willing to watch ecchi if it has some good content beyond the fanservice, then there's a good chance that you'll like it. Out of the various ecchi/fighting anime out there, I think that it's the best that I've seen.

As for Tetsuwan Birdy Decode, I've never seen it (never heard of it actually), so I can't comment. But it'll be great to get FMP and FMP: Fumoffu on Blu-ray. I can't decide whether it's better news that Sekirei has been licensed (and will get a dub no less!) or that the first two FMP series will now get Blu-ray releases as well. And actually, this is probably good news for Neo-ADV as well, since it means more cash for them when those two series probably aren't making them much money at this point given how long it's been since they first came out. And more cash for them, makes it more likely for them to succeed and get to the point that they're actually able to dub their series again.

All around, this seems like good news to me. Yes, I'd like it if companies other than Funimation were doing better and that Funimation wasn't quite so dominant, but at this point, they treat the fans better than anyone with what they do with their releases. I think that it's always great news when a show gets licensed by them. Really, it's good news when any show gets licensed, even if some of the details of what's going to happen to it (with regards to the number of discs, or whether they're going to dub it, etc.) aren't always quite what we'd like. At least we're getting it. And in this case, they're going to be well treated, so it's that much better.

Kaiba would probably sell just as much as this, if not a little less so companies should start thinking quality over quantity.

As much as I prefer Kaiba to Sekirei, I have no doubt that Kaiba would be a flop in the US. Shows like Kaiba simply don't appeal to much of the target audience for anime in the US (Frankly, Kaiba doesn't appeal much to most of the target audience for anime in Japan either). Meanwhile Sekirei has a bunch of women with huge tits who conveniently fight each other so their already skimpy clothes get torn up, along with plenty of nudity aside from that. I have no doubt it will sell more than Kaiba would.

I always wonder though, doesn't the cover make people uncomfortable buying it at the cash register? You would think that would at least be a factor.

Maybe. But you could ask the same question for a couple other Funi titles like Witchblade. However, the R1 cover art is still less risque than the R2J version. See Strike Witches for example.

Anyways, I gather that most sales nowadays occur online.

You do know that Nanatsuiro Drops is an adaption of an eroge, right?

Yeah, but the anime is very good! Geneon would've gotten it if they hadn't died.
I can just imagine the reactions if Nanatsuiro were announced.

"It's based on an eroge therefore it must be crap"

"It has a young-looking female lead character therefore it's pedobait"

"Moe is the cancer that's killing anime"

The 9 episodes I've seen of ND so far have been 3-4 episodes of Magical Girl action, and 5-6 episodes of painfully slow and predictable schoolyard romance. It's as if they were so desperate to get away from the eroge roots that they made the romance ridiculously chaste in overcompensation. Not to mention, ND would've been another entry in Geneon's list of "Otaku anime with moe and/or loli appeal whose fansub viewerbases don't buy anime." See also Nanoha, Rozen Maiden, Popotan, Strawberry Marshmallow, Higurashi, Shana, Familiar of Zero, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I think Nanatsuiro Drops is an okay show so far. But it's definitely got that "doomed to failure in R1" vibe about it. Well, it might perform acceptably as a budget sub-only release, but we all know what the reaction to that would be. And imo the Japanese voice acting isn't that good, either.

Sekirei, on the other hand, is a good move by Funimation. Did anyone else see the news bit about Ikki-Tousen being the #1 TV show download on XBox Live? That says there's a fair market for this kind of thing. I'd gladly put Sekirei on my shelf next to Ikki-Tousen, if only S and I weren't so far apart in the alphabet.

You may have nailed Sekirei's audience perfectly Wink. I like ecchi, and I thought the designs were ugly. That detracted from a fairly serviceable story for me.

I loved her art in Sensitive Pornograph, Category Freaks, & Juvenile Orion. Category had some good moments

The boy in Birdy was pretty useless in the old title

This is actually pretty tame. If any another company would've licensed them then there'd be at least 8 pages of dub fans and sub fans bickering with the occasional middle-grounder who comes in and talks about how people should be happy we're even getting anime here. Also, there's no armchair CEO's with imaginary stats and numbers. So, yeah, they're annoying as hell, but this isn't as bad/entertaining to read as others.

@Eivion
Then I mistook you for an angry acnebeard, but I still don't think those are reasons to be disappointed in the license.

Oooh I like that Full Metal Panic news. Maybe now I can finally get some replacements for the crappy Heavy Metal Collection I have that ADV put out that won't cost me ~$80.

Yay, Funimation!

Why're they crappy? I got the Neon Genesis Evangelion Heavy Metal set and it's not crappy.

They're crappy because when I upscale them to 720p on my 42" TV they look like shit. And before people start going off on the "too many episodes a disc" thing I'll say that it's only my ADV discs that look bad, the Funimation ones look great. So it's an ADV problem, not a general too many episodes per disc problem.

See I'm the opposite. My FMP and Fomoffu discs from ADV look pretty good, while the TSR ones look horrible. Though I will admit they don't look as bad as some of the garbage releases (video quality, not show quality), like Ghost Hunt, Ouran, or Gunslinger Girl. I haven't picked up the remastered sets though, because I'm not rebuying a show just because Funimation was too incompetent to do it right the first time.

As for the other shows, I never cared much for the original Birdy, so I probably won't try the remake. And I've wasted enough money on Funi releases that look like crap, so I won't pick something of theirs up until it's something I really want.

And the comment you made earlier about sub typos pretty much only applies to the first Clannad release. And Sentai no longer uses the company that did it. Most of their releases are now done by MX Media, which actually does a pretty decent job.

Funny, I saw at least 1-3 typos in every chunk of episodes I watched on my He is my Master dvds. It was especially distracting for me as I have a thing about mentally fixing any spelling/grammar/missing word errors I see, taking me out of the show each time it happened.

I've only watched He Is My Master On Demand, and the subs aren't always the same as the DVD releases. But I have Ghost Hound, After Story, and Tears to Tiara, and I only spotted two or three mistakes in all those titles put together. And one of those, probably came down to a difference in translation. The subs on their newest releases seem to be pretty on par with those from Funimation and Nozomi.

I have seen some people here mention Nanatsuiro Drops I didn't know other people was interested in that show.. The main Character is a Mega Cry baby she cries about anything and everything in every episode. If that got license I'd buy it. I don't expect it to get dubbed so dubbed or subbed I'd buy it.... YOU HEAR THAT SENTAI Now is your chance to win money from me.

The fabric of time and space just tore a little. You would buy a sub? (Happy to hear it! Wink )

I think there are a lot of people judging too quickly and harshly here. I loved both of the titles released. I've seen Sekirei being compared to Ikki Tousen earlier in this thread. I personally couldn't stand Ikki T, but loved Sekirei. The action is very decent, the characters are all memorable with distinct personalities, and aside from big boogs, I really can't remember the series being too outrageously ecchi. I think it would be worth at least trying, I wouldn't be surprised if many in this thread had a (at least slightly) different opinion of it after watching.

On another note: BAHDEE?! This is great news! Had some very fluid fighting coupled with great animation. I remember the artwork slipping a bit midway in the 2nd season, but both were very solid shows. 100% blindsided, did not see this license coming, but am VERY pleased that it has been announced.

I just posted this on another thread, but I wanted to repeat it in this one (forgive me Anime catgrin )

The FMP issue I'm most concerned with is when/if TokyoPop will restart releasing the novels! If TokyoPop can't/won't continue releasing the FMP novels, I hope another publisher would pick up the license. There is a faint slimmer of hope in that they've returned to releasing the Twelve Kingdoms novels.

About Funimation releases -- waiting for Ouran to come out in Blu-Ray! And I wish Bandai would get moving on BD -- I'd love to have Wolf's Rain, Stand Alone Complex, and Eureka Seven on BD; the possibility is what's keeping me from buying their DVD brick sets.
