And yeah, how come no one DID read the "English-subtitled DVD" in the announcement?

When I wrote it wasn't there. Think that was added when they updated it.

The amount of background text in SZS is doable. Are people forgetting the work Right Stuf put into the Kare Kano DVDs? Not to say MB will necessarily do that, but it can be done.

Maybe we're more concerned with the latter series, where every episode had about 3 full lists of text on screen.

I'm grateful that titles like SZS are still released in the states, even without a dub.

Same here. It seemed like there was room for speculation when the announcement was just made.

Yes, if you read the list of what was modified you'll find "The first English-subtitled DVD volume will ship on May 25."

Oh yay! This is definitely the highlight of an otherwise crappy week. Not at all surprised about the lack of dub, this show has fairly limited appeal, not to mention it would be absolute hell to dub. Also, I think I'm the only person who's actually excited it's being released as singles. As long as there's a pretty art box to hold it all in, I'm happy.

Nobody's mentioned the price yet. Over at rightstuff the set is up for preorder at $18.74, thats not to bad for 6 episodes. I wouldn't expect to many extras but decent translations and subtitles that don't hurt the eyes would be nice. A decent dub with decent voice actors would double that price unfortunately. Very happy either way and will be picking this up. Smile

That's not to bad, that means the season is going to end up costing like $37

A little bit more then a Section23 sub release, plus you can always wait for a sale for it to go cheaper.

Wow. I'm excited yet very curious as to how they will handle all the jokes and puns. Marking my calendar! Sub-release = yay! I hope they do sets like FUNi does.

This is Media-Blasters we're talking about here, a company that has never bothered with with subtitle formatting beyond "italic or not italic" or positioning outside of the bottom of the screen. We might see some printed liner notes a la Genshiken, but I seriously doubt that any of the background text will be addressed at all. That's why I was hoping that Sentai or Nozomi would get this show, because they would've done it justice.

Yeah, I was really hoping one of those two companies would get the license as well, for much the same reason.

I really hope they don't screw this up too horribly. The blackboard gags and random captions are half the fun of the show!

Maybe they could outsource the subtitle production to Sentai, similar to how Funimation did with ADV for Full Metal Panic TSR? It's a thought...

Well, I haven't been this excited for an anime release in ages. Zetsubou Sensei is the last goddamn show I had ever expected to see licensed Stateside.

Hopefully they do some justice to the background text and signs.

I'm not worried, though. Having a legit US copy of this in my hands will be great regardless of the end result.

If they dub it I can only wonder what Zetsubou-sensei's catch phrase will be converted to. "I'm in despair" just doesn't have the same kick to it as the Japanese.

"Woe is me," maybe?

(I prefer "I'm in despair")
