Ha, I just met acquaintances in this situation. Long story short, when he was a little kid, there was an incident he doesn't remember during his grandmother's funeral with his father throwing out a family friend, and they haven't been friends since then. Later, that ex-family friend's daughter and him became a couple, but of course their fathers would have none of it (interestingly, their mothers are fine with it). So when they turned 18, they both moved out and moved in together. Thanksgiving just passed and now Christmas and New Year's, and this is the first time neither of them are invited to their families' get-togethers.
