Um... why simulcast two series that only have four episodes left?

Why not? Who cares, they are licensed you should be happy. This is much better than the 5 day crap-fest.

Wonderful news. Although the hybrid language title for Baka Test is a little clunky. Why not just go full English with "Idiot and Test - Summon the Beasts"? Granted, the Japanese title sounds stupid too, and I suppose this way referring to it as Baka Test doesn't make me sound out of place.

Regarding Bund not being as good as the manga, I've heard - via round-about means - that the mangaka specifically asked Shinbo and Yoshino to not make a direct adaptation. Source comes indirectly from Radio in the Vampire Bund episode 2 via a post somewhere on animesuki's forums (sorry, don't have a link) via a blog comment (third comment). Granted, that's still a weak excuse, as faithfulness to the manga wasn't Moon Phase's appeal.

I'm curious, after the horrid verdict of the Handley case, how is Funi going to handle the nudity/sexuality of an underage looking (she is a vampire so she's over 18, honest!) character. I imagine we'll be getting lots of mysterious steam and strange edits...

It's a lot easier when it's not actually porn. Handley's stuff had explicit content. Heck, they've released Mnemysone, which features an immortal loli involved in an all female orgy, so Bund should be no problem.

Didn't see Bund coming. Baka & Test, OK, but Bund...that came from the left field...of another park. Still...both shows are going to finish soon, and the fansubs will be available for those who don't want to wait a year for a non-streamed version...so what I don't get is...simulcast? Why? Unless they're going to air the first episodes as well, this seems pointless. Who wants to watch Bund starting with episode 8?

They're hoping to pull off some of the people who have been watching fansubs but are willing to switch to legal streaming. Like me, for instance. I wasn't planning on holding onto the fansubs I have of it after it finished airing, and now I don't even have to worry about downloading new ones. I'll gladly switch to legit simulcast over the questionable reliability of fansubs.

I saw the "Bak" and I got excited because i thought the rest of the word would be "emonogatari" which is the shaft show that should have been licensed over bund. Alas, I was disappointed.

I wonder if the success of the show in Japan made the price of licensing a lot higher, higher than what would be economically viable here. Success in Japan doesn't necessarily mean it would do well over here. It might have a lot of fans and a strong following, but what if they set their expectations too high, like with Haruhi?

Yeah, I kind of get that. It just strikes me a little odd to do that now, when the shows are almost done. I'm sure they must have some sort of plan, I just don't see it. The number of people who would switch from fansubs to legal subs would be quite small, mostly because of Americans would be able to watch the Funi streams.

Also, in response to "questionable quality", I dare you to find me one R1 release that took the time to convey the old archaic Japanese speech pattern by using old English speech pattern. Note that is is not in any way an attack to R1 translations, but a legitimate point in defending something you say is of less then decent quality.

also a dub on this is good to

Did not see DitVB getting picked up. Oh well just means I'm going to buy it when it gets released because it's Shaft (I rather not deal with the t.v airing now)

I was a little puzzled but since Funi has pages up for both of the shows I guess they really are simulcasting and releasing DVDs of them (unlike Phantom, feels like people stopped caring about that show and then it went in a little corner and no one has seen it since). But if Funi would make an actual commitment to simulcasting shows I think this could be a pretty good thing.

I have (imo) successfully de-bunked the myth of the Japanese popularity/high license fee/low N.A. appeal thing here.

I sometimes wonder if these kind of streaming simulcasted releases that show up mid-season like this are a way for Funi to test certain shows they feel may not perform well as DVD sellers. Usually the big licensing announcements show up during cons. These didn't, and the way I hear they are being released makes me wonder if they are destined for a "streaming only/download only" model.

It would make fairly good business sense to generate enough revenue with episode downloads first. If the profits from that fund the cost of a dub, then a possible DVD release would be under consideration.

I guess this is good for Funi if there are enough people downloading the $1.99 episodes. These shows are not for me, in any case. I doubt I am the intended demographic for either of these shows. Though I will check out the ANN reviews to see if the art/animation is sharp enough for me to check out the vampire one.

I think nowadays where japanese companies are like "need cash now", amercian companies are like "we won't pay you ____ for it anymore", and anime fans are like "give us cheap boxsets!", licensing fees have probably dropped a lot.

I think it's been commented on a number of times by Funimation (who said that some shows they basically just share profits on rather then start with a licensing fee), and MB's John Sirabella on the AnimeonDVD boards (watch for his random posts there- they're always informative/useful and he seems to drop a new show whenever he pops up).

I mean, woulda think we'd be getting stuff like Glass Mask, Eyesheild 21, Hetalia, and Simoun by this time when CPM and Geneon collasped and the sky was falling everywhere? I guess the sheer number of titles we're still gettign means Japan is adapting to the market shifts.

Didn't see this coming. Still, when they come out on DVD/Blu-Ray (need to get BR Player), I'll get those.

Why should I be happy two shows I've never watched were licensed?

Sweet. BakaTest is by far the best show out of this season, nice to see Funi made a good choice.

Dance in the Vampire Bund was something I never expected to get licensed and anyone who knows anything about the show can probably guess why.

Because it's slow, boring, and unanimously inferior to the manga?
my god. never before as a post had so much truth in it.

But seriously, unless it was part of the package, why on earth did Funi pick up Bund? It's going to please no body; it won't please the fans of the manga, it can't possibly please other people and it doesn't please the people with ... *cough* "Acquired Tastes in women" because it doesn't even go there outside of it's utterly baffling opening.

As people have said, they licensed the wrong damn Shaft show.
