Hmmm...I wonder how good Crunchyroll's business model is. I'm bit surprised that they managed to secure more funds from a Japanese media company.

This is the Viz business model. They merged with Shueisha and Shogakukan years ago.

Pretty sure CR is a valley startup type of a business, which is nothing like Viz. I think this is good news as long as the stake is small. TVT Provides a good chunk of content for them but it's not the majority of content out there... |

Cool. I'm a big fan of Crunchyroll and fully support their effort to offer as much of the currently airing anime in Japan as possible.

I've wondered about this as well, given most video feed sites barely break even. Seeing the title makes me wonder how much will get lost without supporting revenue returns. I'm sure it'll keep them running for at least another year or two, but without its own stability, it's no different than tossing a wad of cash out of a window. I do believe I read CR's subscription service is doing better than expected, but since the news didn't come from CR directly, I take the information with a grain of salt. This is going to be an interesting year. With so many sites vying for eyeballs and subscriptions, there are going to be losers in this content streaming war. So far, my perception shows Hulu will be one of the first to go. Eventually, I see YouTube being the last one standing. With over a million visitors a day, that's a serious challenge to draw away those eyeballs interested in things more than TV shows, music clips, and anime. |

(quoted for emphasis, especially the latter) For this reason, if CR eventually starts showing only TV Tokyo broadcast anime, then this will become a problem (Yumeiro Patissiere comes from Yomiuri TV*, for instance). That said, let's all hope that TX ("official" abbreviation for TV Tokyo; don't ask) doesn't overstep its bounds. That is, let's hope Crunchyroll won't become "TV Tokyo USA Online" (or some other similar contrived name). *Officially it comes from "YPPC" (Yumeiro Patissiere Production Committee [sp?]), but you get the idea. |

Like the previous poster, I see this as only good news as long as TV-Tokyo doesn't go too far and turn CR into their own little streaming site.
CR is what it is because it manages to secure a vast amount and variety of new quality shows from lots of different TV channels. |

It seems like it is going well as more and more series are appearing on the site per season. Crunchyroll has had a huge base for longer than other streaming sites so perhaps that is why it works out well.

TV Tokyo should have CR broadcast some of its older series. Minky Momo, Hime-chan no Ribon, Kodocha, Utena; this could be a classic shoujo fan's dream deal.

Utena's digital rights, at least in North America and the UK are held by Enoki Films. That's why it's streaming on Anime Network's website.
CR seems to have a decent business model to me, but even with their subscription plans, I don't know if I can see them ever turning a profit. If YouTube can't make money, I don't see how CR will manage to. But I guess time will tell. |

Will the real teller will be how many renewed subscriptions they get this year? I know when I signed up last year I was one of those sub watching fans who wanted to do their part to support the legitimate industry. Now with my subscription renewal due soon and my ability to buy anime severely crippled by the failed economy, it's looking likely I'll be dropping down to their free to view option instead. I wonder how many other people are in a similar boat? |

Wow, that's a fairly good sum and I hope it gets put to good use. I'd been thinking myself that CR was getting most of the shows I wanted to watch each season so I'd guess I should get a subscription soon.

Doubtful that would happen as TV Tokyo doesn't do any of the ecchi stuff that is on of CR's mainstays. |

I'm going in the opposite direction with respect to my CR subscription renewal. It's coming up in May, I think, and I'll be upgrading to premium membership because I'd like to check out some of the K-dramas. |
