Can't speak for other countries, but isn't it very American to be opinionated? "My ball team's better than yours" "My home town's better than yours" "My favorite show gets the highest ratings, so it's better than yours" How often, while I was wearing a rock t-shirt, I was informed "**** suck!" In your opinion.
So people come to anime with those same attitudes they had about sports, etc.

There's haveing an Opinion and being an A-hole. Some of these otaku are just A-holes about their opinions. And to them their opinion isn't an Opinion it's fact.
