Try explaining the plot of any Gundam series to someone while using the character's names.

Hmm, let me try it. I'll use the second season of Gundam 00 as an example:

spoiler["In season two of Gundam 00, the Innovators - rogue innovades under the leadership of Ribbons Almark and his deputy Regene Regetta - make a power grab to rule the world. The Innovators Revive Revival, Hiling Care, Devine Nova and Bring Stabity all pilot powerful mobile suits in the fight against their enemy Celestial Being, whose pilots include Allelujah Haptism and Lockon Stratos. To make matters worse for the Gundam pilots, the A-LAWS military force (which include the powerful Mister Bushido) was created by human puppets of the Innovators to harass Celestial Being. However, all this military might was almost not required when Innovator spy Anew Returner successfully infiltrated Celestial Being. In the final battle and with many of the Innovators killed in action, Ribbons turns to the Gaga Forces in order to crush the human rebellion, but he ultimately is betrayed by Regene and killed in a duel on the Moon's surface."]

Oh my goodness, that's truly awful. Whoever came up with the names must have been on one impressive acid trip at the time.

LOL! This remind me that not only are Gundam names ridiculous, but there's a humongous glut of them!

I think this season's poorly named anime prize has to go to Blast of Tempest.

There is a whole boat load of anime out there that I already enjoy/would like to watch/would like to own, that I downright refuse to purchase just because of the title.

My anime collection is in plain sight... and I'd prefer it if I didn't have titles that sound like porn in there.

And that is saying something because I already own and display shows like Sekirei without hesitation. Is that weird? lol

Also Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I think people lose interest halfway through the long title?

Because most people in this part of the world "have the attention span of a three-day-old melted pudding pop," to quote Jimmy Neutron. But seriously, the titles for some shows are just awkward as hell to speak out loud for particular folks. On the other hand, I'm annoyed ignorant pre-judgmental people think putting creamy or milky in a title implies we're talking about a porno centered around female bodily fluids. It just goes to show how perverted this idiot nation has become over the years (I'm North American-born too, but I'm not repulsive like that).

my favorite has always been:
All Purpose Cultural Cat-Girl Nuku-Nuku
it's odd, but also the only reason I watched the OVA's, because, how can you not?

I've sadly reached that stage where I don't recommend anything to anyone... some of the anime fans I know react with:
"I can't believe you watch that garbage" or "ew, this show is a million times better than that"

and those that don't watch anime: "isn't that some kind of chinese kid show?"

you can't win, really... OTOH, I mostly know the Japanese title, as I often hate the English, so that's how I describe it...

Asobi Ni Ikuyo is infintely better than Cat Planet Cuties on that front...

I don't know, I think those names are quite "Bodacious."

Honestly, anyone who would be so shallow as to dismiss a show based on it's title probably wouldn't have liked it anyway.. nor are they worth the effort of trying to introduce a show to them. If you have to go to such roundabout ways to sell someone on something, to to point of essentially lying, then it's going to be a problem down the road.

Well, you do seem like the master of understanding empathetic communication so this is expected.

to quote Carl Kimlinger's review of Moretsu Pirates:
Quote:
There's very little bodaciousness to be found in Bodacious Space Pirates.

I remember the first time i saw the dvd of Maid-Sama at Fye, with its cover of girls in swimsuits, and i thought someone had misplaced a hentai in the anime aisle. One month later i found out it was actually a shojo series. Shocked Although the most misleading name i heard has to be Creamy Mami.

I see a lot of people bringing up Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Princess Tutu but those are both deconstructions/re-analyses of the magical girl genre, to the point of the title being misleading being intentional and therefore I think it would have been a real shame if they had been renamed for the west.

Tiger & Bunny I think could have been re-marketed for the west and re-named perhaps with the intention of airing it on Toonami or even earlier in the Cartoon Network day where it would fit well with other superhero shows if not for the name. Maybe something like, The NeXT Generation of Heroes: Tiger & Bunny or something.

Ah yes, Princess Tutu came to mind for me as well. I knew my sister would like the series, but of course upon hearing the title, she wasn't about to believe me. I finally got her to sit down and watch the first two episodes, and she was enjoying it so much she asked to borrow it so she could finish it.

That was several months ago. She hasn't watched any of it because her husband saw the title and wouldn't let her live it down. And with a 1 1/2 year old, she hasn't had time to watch it while he wasn't there. ^_^;;

Admittedly I too stayed as far away from the series as possible due to it's name - it just sounded so frilly and girly, and I am extremely selective in what "girly" shows I like. Thankfully some AMVs and cosplayers finally changed my mind.

Ah yes.. I hear that at least one vendor has actually played "Hold Me Now" at their dealer's room booth to convince people to give Princess Tutu a shot...

I think Madoka is awesome, but always feel a bit sad when people express their "shock" at the twist it takes. Princee Tutu went the exact same route (as did its precursors like Magic Knights Rayerath) and is also a GORGEOUS story, artistically, musically, and structurally. I strongly feel its lame title prevented it from getting the accolades it deserved.

Once again, I also LOVE Madoka and will school anyone's ass who tries to say that I don't "get" it, but really, a lot of what makes Madoka great is already covered by its predecessors. (Sans its European 20th Century war references).

Maybe (I am not well versed in magical shows) but Madoka is this generation's magical show which reflects on the genre.

This is why I've never been upset with American companies changing the title they put on the DVD/Blu-Ray box cover for a series. I can think of sooo many titles that wouldn't have had a prayer at sales had they been given their actual titles.

And then there are the ones where the English titles is actually *more* ridiculous.

(Tweeny Witches I am looking at you. Also Bodacious Space Pirates.)

Addendum: Princess Tutu's name has never bothered me, it is an accurate title for the show after all.

Bodacious space pirates is the Japanese title of the series as well, it just got changed from mini-skirt pirates which was in fact the title of the books the anime was based on.sort of like how the book Do androids dream of electric sheep was renamed blade runner when it got turned into a movie.

<_< Um, not in the slightest bit. It's a late-night otaku oriented thing like Nanoha was. Pretty Cure is more what is reflective of this generation's magical girl.
