(keeping in mind that a girl dancing in a bikini also counts as porn here..) |

Seems like kind of a double standard on apple's part seeing as how you can get apps detailing Kama Sutra positions.

Apple is one of the most close-minded, egotistical and indeed totalitarian companies around. They like to keep a monopoly and iron hold on anything and everything they can get their hands on, and it's not really a surprise at all that they're trying to gag and stifle more creativity here as well. They're also out of touch with the development trends of today; thus their close-sourced approach on almost everything, the massively useless Ipad being another example. I think companies should look to publishing their products on open source alternatives like Maemo and Symbian S^3 (and up, with Qt), which don't offer any such restrictions and thus provide so much content and creativity, much more than the quite inane Itunes. For example, even though Maemo is new, it's already one of the most vibrant and active development projects around, and Symbian S^3 is set to continue to that trend when it sees full release later this year with the Nokia n8. The future lies with open source - as that's what people want: freedom of choice.

Yes, but Symbian has virtually no market share in North America, which is one of the biggest markets for this. Even Nokia doesn't put in on it's own phones in the US and Canada, because most people don't even know what Symbian is and have no interest in it.
As for the DRM argument, you really can't blame Apple for that one. iTunes DRM is actually one of the fairer systems out there to implement it, and it works much better than some competing systems. Even when their music had DRM as well, it's limitations were not nearly as bad as those on other digital stores (and often those didn't seem to be enforced, like the CD burn number limitation.) DRM was placed in iTunes, Zune, and other online retailers at the insistence of publishing, video, and music companies. Apple pushed quite regularly to have DRM stripped from it's music files, and eventually succeeded in such (for some concessions to the record companies, such as variable pricing.) The same thing may eventually happen with video and publishing. Unfortunately, Apple says it has no interest in being seen as a "peddler of porn" and many manga would be rejected as a result. The violence is also an issue, and though the manga are Japanese, they are being sold in an American store to American audiences, and it's just to be expected that some manga will not be considered appropriate for a store where just about anyone can download them. After all, if someone finds something inappropriate on iTunes, they're not going to make a stink to the manga publishers, they're going to bitch to Apple. Also, to the calls for some publishers to start their own stores, you have to remember that it would cost a sizable amount of money. You have the cost of servers, software design, and data transmission. Not to mention, the cost of personnel. Unlike a scanlation site, those people are going to work for free. It would be an expensive venture with a much more limited exposure than what Apple or other e-publishers can give them. |

E-manga can't have blood splatter? Well, there goes about 95% of my favorite manga including almost all of CLAMP titles
I had thought about checking into getting e-manga on my favorites, but considering all the BS about what some idiot with a buttload of cash thinks we should and shouldn't see, I'll just continue not to give a cent to them. There goes my thoughts on even getting an iPad in the future if they're going to be stupid. *huff* This is why I use iTunes but never purchase through iTunes.. I get my stuff elsewhere and through other medium. |

I know we all hate censorship, but if Apple has a concern about who is downloading material... can't they censor minor stuff like a single panel of boobage? I mean, we're talking one black bar and it would be appropriate for any age - never mind that the series is aimed squarely at adults, and most anyone who hasn't held a full time job would find it boring; seriously, do you imagine twelve-year olds wanting to read about the exploits of a woman in her late 20s juggling her job and relationships?

I'm not surprised by this in the least. With all the crap happening with the app store and the stupidest things not being able to be approved at all. So basically anything that super safe and kid friendly is fine. Wow what a bore.

Wether I like boobs or not, I'd never pay for digital manga that is edited like that. And just imagine all the black bars they'd need to edit out blood splatters. Eww, no thank you. I've been hearing a lot of stuff about how Apple if very anal about what apps can and can't have that they sell, and have heard some hypocritical examples on their part, but now it's just plain stupid. If they want to be top in the market for digital media like e-books and comics, they need to get rid of this stuff. What's next? Edited mp3s in itunes that edit out curse words and gory lyrics, or scenes edited out of e-books? |

Oh, agreed, I'm just taking of Hataraki-Man as a specific example, which has such mild objectionable content. Meanwhile, isn't there anything they can do about age restriction on iTunes? While I don't think a child would be scarred for life on most manga, I do think that, with Kodansha's catalog, you might not want, say, Berserk available for any twelve-year old with mommy's credit card. I'm trying to negotiate some reasonable middle ground... as always. |

I think I get it. Apple doesn't really care about protecting the chastity of iTunes customers, they just want to stir up controversy to get some attention. And then afterward they can reap the benefits of hosting controversial content, including more attention.
Maybe I'm just a perfectionist but I want a job done suberbly, not just well enough. It looks like eBooks are falling into the bin of other things the iPhone does that are just well enough to be do-able with a price to rub it in. No thanks, I say. |
