Sweet. Now I can actually watch this. Also, Funimation usually means Hulu, which I approve of.

FUNi, you truly are awesome.

Thank you for not going after the blatant harem and fanservice shows, and instead giving us fans the more interesting stuff.
Does it have alot of fanservice?

Wait, strach that. Its a action/bad dudes show.

Wow, I am extremely baffled why Funimation would pick up this show for simulcast, I certainly hope it did not cost very much. Rainbow is the biggest disappointment of this season, so far. The show manages to fail on almost every level, the dark gritty mood the show is trying to create is completely negated by the over the top villains. The chief antagonist is so excessively evil that I find myself laughing every time he appears on screen. Then there is the use of rape or suggestion of rape in almost every episode. I love shows about people dealing with despair and misery, but this show turns horrid acts of sexual perversion into a running gag of: let’s see who gets raped this episode.

CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ANIME ENOUGH!

Watch it. Watch this show, dammit watch it (though, if you can't get past the first episode, you should stop.)

No, it's only a simulcast deal as of now.

Which rather worries me actually. I mean, if they don't decide to release these shows on DVD, it seems unlikely anyone else will. As a Canadian who gains nothing from their streams, this may may actually be bad news.

Don't care for the show, but it's still good to see more simulcasts being done.

Well, it has emotional fanservice -- i.e. tragedy porn.

The material itself -- the time period and setting of the show -- is strong enough, but the end product here is basically an excessively manipulative soap opera: you have caricatures, not any real personalities; every evil person is ugly; you have DRAMATIC FREEZE FRAMES to show the suffering; you have excessively sad music to compliment The Dark Drama with cheesy, roaring music to fit scenes that are supposed to be Very Uplifting. I'd be tempted to call it parody if it weren't so serious.

The fault of characterization probably lies with the manga-ka, but everything else is a tonal issue that obviously is controlled by the director.

I absolutely love this series. Funi has just won me over... I really hope this leads to a DVD release (subbed or dubbed) as well as the manga being translated...

Wow. It's based on the times...it's no where near as over the top you think it is. BAD THINGS HAPPEN. that's what the show is about. humans are evil , especially back then when it was harder to get caught

Well, isn't this story a bundle of insight.

No one is objecting to depictions of negativity, but if Rainbow isn't excessively manipulative and melodramatic, then nothing is.

Way to prove you have no idea what you're talking about! The only one(s) who have been "raped" in Rainbow (of the named characters) spoiler[is Jou/Joe, who was first raped by the head of his orphange, and then again by the doctor.]

Also, did you hate Now and Then, Here and There for having a comically insidious pure evil antagonist as well?

Nice grab but I hope this ends up on Hulu. I hate Funi's player.

I know this isn't aimed at me, but good criticism against that show exists.

I can understand why people really like these kind of shows, but I can't really care for that schmaltz played so straight and simplistically, whether it's feminine or masculine*. I just don't like it when stories -- especially ones like Rainbow and Now and Then, Here and There -- basically reduce and undermine the real world issues they deal with.

*The idea that melodrama belongs to females is a sexist notion, as I see it. Such things as "manly tears," "male bonding" and any tragedies associated with such stories, are also melodramatic. Mind, melodrama in itself is not bad and can be very good, just not in excess -- which is true of just about any genre.

So, Youtube/funimation is region blocked for Canada? This is a question I have had that I live on the wrong side of Lake Erie to check.
