To be fair he handed it over to his trusted friend who had never directed anything before in his life and whos only credits at the time involved being an animation director on an "island episode" of the godawful Nadia Blue Waters and and animator on some other movie.

Actually, that episode, 31, was one of the more important in the show. Removing episodes 23-29, and 32-34 make Nadia a great anime.

He directed End of Evangelion. That's something.

Not before Kare Kano he didn't. What made him think an animation director can make the move up to director?

Which episode is the one where they all get high? I wanna rewatch that episode.

Everyone has to get their break somewhere, KanjiiZ. James Cameron's first movie was Piranha 2.

End of Evangelion was released in 1997. He took over Kare Kano in 1998.

We're talking about different people, Drizz. I'm talking about Tsurumaki, you're talking about Anno.

@ Splitter: That's his fault for thinking he could make Piranha any better. My god that was some of the worst drowning I had ever seen. I still refuse to see Piranha II to this day.

I'm talking about Tsurumaki. He directed the first half of End of Evangelion, or episode 25', for a 1997 release, and he took over Kare Kano when Anno left the show in 1998.

It isn't. You're probably thinking of the Death section of Death & Rebirth, which was directed by Masayuki.

Somewhat more on topic...

I wonder if he meant it's based on a light novel series, or a real novel like Howl's Moving Castle/Yukikaze/etc?

I think that a story about kids who collect magic books set in '20s will be a great show. Maybe it will even be like D.Gray-man, which is set almost at the same time.
So, I am surely awaiting for the new show Wink

a boy and girl that collect magical books? meh, sounds lame (aka too shounen).

Still its Gainax, so lets see how they handle this

This sounds interesting. I hope it's not done in a shounen-ish way though.

"A boy pilots a giant robot his father made, to protect the world from alien invaders".

I concur with KanjiiZ. Akira Kurosawa suffered from severe depression, and that never impeded upon his work. Also: just because a director doesn't like what the studio is doing with something is not a valid reason to leave the project. It's a bit self-centered.

Akira Kurosawa was supposed to direct the Japanese parts of Tora! Tora! Tora! but because the American studio treated him like shit, he left the project.
