Therefore, when you say there is "absolutely no difference", the claim is false. Since its the premise of your argument, your argument is unfounded.

Remember that pawn shop owner example you used? Here it is.

No wonder you are done with this topic - you got nothing, other than the desire to defend the scumbag sites that you either use or work on.

The scumbag manga viewer sites are actually distributing copies of ripped off work. If you are going to call someone a fence despite the fact that they do not distribute the items, go ahead, but note that you are speaking your own private language rather than a language shared with other members of broader society.

For you and I, this is how we prefer it. However, to any writer, musician, translator, etc whose hobbies are writing, making music, translating, then that's a big insult. I think Justin and Zac are old enough to decide whether or not they want to keep their job and their hobbies separate.

I have a friend who loves history, loves reading about it, loves sharing it with other people. She works at a museum and gives tours, and is loving her job. I've had friends who enjoy computer programming (and have made games on their computer in their free time)... guess what fields they went to in college?

My biggest hobby is probably anime/manga, or just fudging around on the internet. But I'm in the medical field making medical devices, which through trial and error is something I've learned I enjoy doing. All I knew going into college is that I wanted to be in the medical field and helping improve others' lives, and the driving force that got me from point A to point B was that math was my strong point and so engineering seemed like an obvious choice (specifically, bioengineering). And this works for me.

We all have our choices. I don't see anything wrong with making a career out of a medium that you love, just as long as you're aware of the ups and downs of your decision.

Good for you, and also way to be a presumptuous, judgmental clown.

I love my job. I am a writer, an animation enthusiast, and I love the occasional chance to be creative. This career has afforded me the chance to do all of those things at once, has given me dozens of great friends and fond memories, and has kept food on my table for 10 years now.

One thing I have learned? Folks like you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, but are convinced otherwise.

Another thing- If people made their jobs and hobbies seperate, there wouldn't be Comics or Animation [in all honesty, even making a webcomic isn't a hobby- it's a serious committment]

Highly debatable. To me, one of the best pieces of guidance counselor advice is still, "Pick something you love doing and find a way to make money from it." I tried to follow this principle, but sadly, the porn industry was not interested in hiring me as a performer. Crying or Very sad

Oh, lol Blood-. I bet they were afraid of you stealing their fame given the high amount perverseness you're capable of reaching. But I entirely agree with that, unless you want to end up in a boring career like mine (though I definitely didn't give up on what I like).

Conversely, not everyone can deal with an entirely dispassionate career. There are days when I literally do nothing else besides anime. I'm not unhappy, so stop painting me as such. :p

Oh, wait ... Anime News Network was supposed to hold out for an Executive Editor and New Media hand who are indifferent to anime?

That concept has me a bit baffled.

and I've never seen a movie try to bring the anime-style to live action form to the perfection they did.

Too bad it was in the "won't STFU and get somewhere" style of Honneamise. Rolling Eyes

This is the 6th year of heading to a fan sub site, watching anime (for free), then turning and writing a review about it.

They're not necessarily endorsing watching anime without paying for it, though.

This action is absolutely no different than the manga and fansub sites, but yet it's okay to use them, write a review, profit from it, then criticize these sites on their own for-profit website.

They're profiting from the reviews, not the misuse of content.

becuase the japanese are so much better at adapting their own works for live action, right?

Well, they don't have as many writers and directors who live to rape the source material by committee as we do, anyway.

Honestly it annoys me how quick people are to forgive Crunchyroll.

I get stuff I wouldn't be able to see otherwise, unless I wanted to go the fansub or overpriced import route, so it's totally easy for me.

I've seen a lot of "scanalation" sites that do have scanned copies of us licensed manga up for downloading-but there's some out of print stuff such as Outlanders that's almost impossible to obtain otherwise. Now- hentai doujunshi-that's another matter all together-that's fair game as far as I'm concerned.

Is it that hard to find Outlanders? Stuff pops up on Ebay pretty regularly.

http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=Outlanders+manga&_sacat=0&_odkw=Outlanders&_osacat=0&bkBtn=&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313

And sites like MileHighComics carry a lot of back issues and trade paperback backstock.
http://milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=list&title=59428292746&snumber=1

It's not as easy as a scan, but it's not impossible. If you ask on a forum for help to find back issues or trades, somebody can probably hook you up with a decently priced option.

And I dunno, if I can't find it, I'll just read somethingelse I can find, but that's just me.

Just want to say (besides happy late birthday) that I look forward to getting more stuff like Remi and other titles that deserve a second shot in the spotlight. I always feel like there's some good stuff I've missed out on just because it was before my generation, or at least before the whole bubble thing. Though I'm positive there's even more stuff I'm glad I'll never see...

I'm also not a big fan of the "OEL" label, either. We need to figure out the best way to market the fact that it's manga influenced, but still get to be its own thing. TP was too wrapped up in just having their own original manga, so of course the content sucked. This has so much potentiel to become its own sub-genre but no one's giving it a chance. Hopefully Northrop can make it work. Good luck.

Finally finished the podcast. Glad you guys got a sponsor.
(Cha-ching! $$)

Happy Birthday, Justin! And congrats to your sister getting hitched! <3

I've been hearing a lot of artist alley participants complain about Anime Expo's price jacking....seems excessive...Thankfully I'm over here in Texas...(But I've heard nothing but good things about Otakon. Anime smile Maybe in a year or two...)

I've been meaning to kick back and watch some new anime, but San-Japan's been eating up most of my time. Still, Remy looks interesting, I'm a fan of retro anime...

**Avoiding the scanlation argument because I'm not in the mood for nerd rage right now....-_-**

LOVED the discussion on the future of OEL manga. Eeh, maybe if Tokyopop had tried advertising their product as a more "alternative comic" than just "manga" it would've proven more successful. As a bit of a rookie comic artist myself, I paid close attention to your thoughts on having good art, empathic characters, and a well plotted story...

Just kinda wish I could be in Cali for Northrop's panel, and the live podcast! Oh, well...

Heat Guy J is the worst drinking game ever! I quit.

Also wow, the insight of an 11 year old. Even she knows better then some marketers. Great podcast guy even though the advertising (totally okay with it) was weird at first. Kind of funny how you had to read that whole spiel. Also got my fingers crossed for OELs. Hopefully they are as promising as Mr. Davis described.

And happy birthday Justin. In my culture at that age, you'd be forced into marriage, urged to have a kid, and be given a new name that everyone must call you by. I would go with Serge Sevakis. Sounds exotic. Or Laser. Laser Sevakis. That would be cool.
