I liked the first season quite a bit, and am somewhat glad it is more of the same. It was the kind of show that was light and enjoyable, or in other words, plain stupid fun. Certainly not a work of art, but I found myself liking it more than I had any right to. I blind-bought the second season (I can't leave a series or collection incomplete, although I don't have any sequel or later volume on my shelves that I would say doesn't deserve it's place on its own, excluding the Eden of the East movies). I'm glad the second season stays the course for the most part. Although improvements, refinements, and added depth are always welcome, more of the same is always better than a cash-in or a decline in quality.

Side note: I love the chipboard box that this came in, and it is very nice for fitting the first season too. This was actually the first Funi chipboard case that I have ever gotten, but damn it, did they need girls in their underwear on the front? It is a nice box, but I can't display it like that. Anime hyper Now the luxury of such a box is going to waste by being lined up with all my other blurays so that the front isn't showing.

In any case, SW is one of those shows I like without really knowing WHY. I...just do.

Oh, we all have those. Definitely nothing to feel ashamed about.

Well, I like the character designs--ever since I saw the series, I've put at least one shy/introverted gray-haired girl in the casts of my stories--and the visuals were nice. The characters weren't walking archetypes or stereotypes (except Charlotte, who can get away with it because she's from 'MURRICA 'BERIA--and she's pneumatic as hell).

My main criticism of the first season would be the languid pace of the story.

you do realize that i'm reading all saying you put on me & besides um give all many places i been talk about my typing writing in anime area yea i get it.

but come give do best i could to say describe on the topics.

& back to Strike Witches series give one of reasons why Funi even have it indeed it got Fanservice or i like to call it Funi-service.

cause whenever Funi pick anime with doobi, pantsu, & etc relate to fanservice of whatever they license-dub hey unless recall they even pick-up Master of Martial Hearts (yea we all know that end-up).

sure Strike Witches have fanservice still also focus on the series besides i seen anime with fanservice but always still focus on watching it.

give you're all on panic button if Funi would jump the sharks to ever license Manyuu Hikenchou.

overall regardless just watch Strike Witches series from start to finish then say all you want on it.

Hahaha.......... this reminds us how Strike Witches is like Star Wars: people can take those or leave it, but even those who love it, like how the Robot Chicken crew absolutely loves SW, but they can pick it apart so well it's hilarious! Laughing

Very nice review. Despite it being one of my favorite shows it has a rather limited appeal, but its nice to see reviews that don't dismiss it based on the whole lack of pants. Shame the forum was in conflict for a couple pages but its nice to see several other readers who enjoyed the show. Now if only funimation would license and release the movie, say sometime in 2013(very wishful thinking)

Sometimes I wonder if Strike Witches is as niche as reviewers claim it to be. Sure, all the butt-shots will drive away people who hate fan service, but Strike Witches has the characters, music and visuals to cover for that. From a commercial standpoint I think Strike Witches is definitely a very profitable product for FUNimation and is selling in the thousands. Do remember that the first season of Strike Witches on BD was the third edition/printing of this series in the U.S (two DVD box sets were released before that). The only series that had that much editions in FUNimation's arsenal is Dragon Ball Z.

Strike Witches has almost always been in the top 30 Anime listings on Amazon since it released. I don't buy its niche at all among the anime fandom... Fanservice sells. Theres also stuff like Samurai Girls, MajiKoi, Freezing, Sekirei, Heavens Lost Property and other stuff like that which are often near the top of the listings. It just may not be the kinda genre that people openly admit they like on sites like this, which leaves an impression to people that not many people watch it.

Probably a question ANN should ask Funimation and Right Stuf, next time they come to chat on ANN Cast.

woah nice figures. btw i also like heavens lost property as well as samurai girls, and I have heard that strike witches is quite successful.(the vast amount of merchandise don't lie). I think ryansaotome hit it right on, a great amount of posters on this site are negative, and im sure many people dont openly admit to liking shows like this. i knew strike witches has 3 releases as of know, but i didn't realize that, aside from a couple SAVE and Classics releases, only a very few shows have had that many funimation releases. anyway i have the very first release, although it took me until this year to finally get it. also sorry for really late post if anyone ever reads this Embarassed

Nah, over here we just like to make fun of 'em. But we're known to make fun even of things we like. We're MST3K fans, after all. Laughing

I hate that 'War on Pants' tagline. Sure it sells but if they had actually watched the show, they'd realise that the show's appeal stretches out much further than most shows with ecchi elements.

The reason it sells in Japan is because it has the mainstream appeal to capture the average otaku's attention on top of the fanservice for the neckbeards. The guys at Funimation, obviously ignorant to the actual content in the show, disregard this appeal and aim straight for the neckbeard audience. It still sells but at the risk of losing any potential of appealing to anyone but weirdos and open minded induviduals such as myself and anyone else who gave it a shot despite the ignorant 'criticism' the show gets. In fact, It's the main reason why I went into the show with such low expectations.

The quality of the show is well above par thanks to the top notch animation, action sequences, character drama and soundtrack even if the plot is a little formulaic and clichéd. It's a lot better than most of the stuff that the kids are dancing to today (Or, more specifically, Sword Art Online, Steins;Gate (Which I still like) and Mirai Nikki). So why is it not accepted by the mainstream in the west? Because Funimation that's why.

I think the fact it has little girls (going as young as 12 years old) naked is enough to turn off many Westerners no matter its merits. That stuff doesn't bother the Japanese mainstream as much since they are generally more open to sexual stuff in their media so they would give it more of a chance that the West wouldn't.
