Chastised?? He was LAUGHING when he made that comment! Cranky old man? More like he was surprised that out of a whole room of 6 or 7 people, no one had ever owned a dog. I think I would be too come to think of it.
Miyazaki has his own incredibly strong opinions. Having those opinions is what makes him such a good director. While I don't agree with this outlandish remark, I can see where he's coming from. Modern society is constantly plugged in to their mobile devices wherever they go, and somehow we rarely realize just how much we are. It is rare to see a movie or a TV show that shows our obsession with technology as a part of our normal life (unlike movies like Summer Wars which emphasize it and movies like Spirited Away which exclude it.)
So he has an opinion, big deal. It doesn't mean a thing to me, I have my own opinion too.

I don't like the iPad, either. Everything it does has already been done and then their is the whole iTunes is a piece of crap, thing to deal with...

Frankly if you don't find Miyazaki's cranky old man rants charming and funny and completely appropriate for who he is as a creative giant, you're missing the point.

The image here is not that ipad gestures actually resemble masturbation... In fact I highly doubt Miyazaki has any idea what they really look like.
The point here is that people are "pleasuring themselves" with these portable devices, an inward act of isolation despite being in a public place like a train surrounded by other people.
I think anyone that understands Miyazaki's philosophy on the world well enough would understand why he finds that so distasteful. |
So, Miyazaki specifies that he finds iPads excessively distasteful, specifying in that the way in which one "strangely strokes" them makes him "ill" and that people acting about this manner will soon occupy the train "toching as if comforting themselves" (to quote with the greatest conservative interest) and that doesn't evoke a particular image in you? Talk about masturbation. Here's a word for you: 婉曲語.

Replace "Apple" with "lolicon" and you get the same thread every time.

I can understand the curiosity, but from what little I've heard, it seems like an incomplete version of Vanilla SF IV. So personally, I'm not that interested.

It's fun to have to pass time, but, yes... it is very incomplete; you have like one punch and one kick button, a focus button and then a button used for EX/Ultra (I think... I can't remember any more).
You can only throw out the strongest Shoryuken, which is kinda ridiculous since you get punished on that.

Yes, but he was being somewhat poetic about it.
Hence why I think "self gratification" (which also evokes masturbatory images) is a better translation for what he said.
Basically I think masturbation is too specific here.

Hmm...
1. There's nothing wrong with masturbation, in private or with consenting partners.
2. Reading manga on a train is in no way equivalent to masturbating in public (or reading porn on a train, thankyou very much Hideaki Anno).
3. It's far preferable to read manga on a train that talk to somebody who hates computers and cellphones, or someone else who I really don't want to talk to (people reading the Daily Mail, for instance). In fact, what exactly does Miyazaki want me to do on trains instead of reading manga or other books or listening to music or watching stuff on my iPod? Because I don't think I have an obligation to be bored when there's a non-rights violating source of entertainment available. I don't always want to talk to someone, shocking as it may seem, and sometimes I go to public places to spend time on my own, reading in the park for instance, or just walking around in the rain listening to music. Note I am not one of those people who complains when there are children in these places not being silent and still. So long as I haven't got a head/earache at the time (and then I would go home as soon as possible anyway) it doesn't bother me.
4. I live in supported accommodation with no house phone except for the one in the staff office which is really for the staff to use for phone calls related to the work they do supporting residents, so if I want to use the phone to call my busy boyfriend who lives a train ride away for an hour or two, I have to have a mobile, that's not the only reason I own one, but it's part of it.
5. I own a mac and an iPod and use iTunes, but the iPad doesn't sound very good and iPhones, in my opinion, don't last long enough before they need charging, plus they are somewhat delicate and I have been known to drop mobile phones and iPods in the past, my mobile phone is a cheap, robust Samsung, and not a new model (I think). In other words, I'm not against all Apple products, but I'm no Apple fangirl.
6. I've suffered from migraines since I was a child and I don't always do that well in the great outdoors.

I hear Satoshi Kon prefers Colgate toothpaste and hates Aquafresh toothpaste. Let's argue over the social relevance of that next. Now go!

Fair enough; translation's enough of a minefield without nutty professor here waxing pretty about rod polishing.

Judging by the derailment of conversation, I'm gonna' say it's okay to close the thread, now.
