I just wanted to say what the hell is with the name he came up with? Chinka is VERY close to sounding like racial slur.

Maybe in English. In Japanese, it's just one character away from, "penis" (substitute ko for ka).

Anyways, you should probably go to Akihabara before speaking about it as if you know it.

I haven't been, but I question why we're all trusting Danny says about Akihabara as *objectively true*. So few of us have been there, that I'm worried that the reportage is biased.

If there are a few real good quality stores in Akihabara....keep the faith. I hope they survive, or turn things around.

I'm not honestly a big fan of Akiba when it comes to anime shopping, there are areas I prefer. However there is still tons of good stuff in Akihabara. There's a large number of anime shops, manyof which carry unique or hard to find items, although most of bigger ones focus on the same, latest material. It is an "otaku" district, so Moe is somewhat prevalent (but not unbearably so).

There's a lot of small electronic boutiques: computer shops, electronic component shops (need an 8Ω resistor? Akiba is the place to look), as well as large consumer electronic stores (the equivalent of Best Buy).

There's also a number of stores dedicated to other hobbies, including video games, model railroad building, other models, airsoft guns, wood-working, RC models, etc...

There's some very good restaurants, including 2 of my favorite restaurants in Tokyo.

On the seedier side, there are a large number of maid cafes (are these really seedy?) and many stores selling porn. Most of these are tucked away though, and not on the main strip.

What I haven't noticed in Akihabara are the true calling cards of a red-light district. As far as I can tell, there are no massage parlors, no soaplands, no love-hotels and no outdoor solicitation for sex. Things you can easily find, without intentionally looking for them, in many other parts of Tokyo.

You should also reference more credible websites, as the one you referenced is becoming something of a joke.

...really? I've seen them appear on Anime3000, and I've seen other ANN people appear on there, so I assumed they had at least some merit.

They're trolls. They go out of their way to post post incendiary material and pick fights with other websites. Some of their articles are well written, and they have had decent contributors over the years, but other articles are very poorly researched, or are the result of a certain amount of unhappiness the admin has over his failed attempt to live the Otaku life in Tokyo.

I must admit that I've personally been trolled by him, so I'm hardly impartial.

One can only try... And yes, i agree caution is always advised, as I've been burned before myself.

One of my clients has been burnt, and is still being burned by him.

Won't mention specifics, but Danny is making money through a self fulfilling prophecy. He uses his financial resources to build up this 'super cool' image of his, uses it to sell his half-baked web design services, and charges a high fee cos of his fame and all.

Beware of him. Don't do business with him if possible.

I'm sorry, but without any details, it's unlikely somebody's going to believe you.
new account + controversial topic + no... let's call it proof = low chances somebody's going to believe the claims.

It's not like I want to defend Mr. Choo, but I guess it's in everybody's interest that we have a discussion that isn't based on claims that have no backing whatsoever.

In other words: please fuel my hated Cool

And I'm sure it's the otaku community themselves that have had a large part in preventing Akihabara from becoming like that. It's largely maintained it's status as a bastion of capitalism. Sure there's many places that sell hentai games but that is part of the otaku culture too. Actually next time I visit Japan I'll go to Akihabara for my material needs, but I'll be aiming to satisfy my "other" interests (ie perversions) in places like Shinjuku or Shibuya, perhaps. Akiba may be spoiled by tourists and otaku but overall it's tame and clean compared to places the more adventurous types might explore.

IOW, calling Akiba a red light district makes one sound rather prudish.
