In the 90s, Gunsmith Cats would have been perfect for live-action, but I'm not sure anyone would care now.

I don't know how well the whole main villain wants to turn our hero into her lesbian sex slave will sell.

I would watch it though.

Well, they don't have to use Goldie. They could use Grey. Or even Radinov from the anime.

They'd definitely have to tone down some things about Minnie May.

One title I think would make a great film is Welcome to the NHK.

Gonna go ahead and hide this under spoiler, just in case.

spoiler[You have a 22 year old shut in who has no idea what he wants to do with his life, living in an apartment paid for by his parents who he continues to lie to, claiming he's actually working on something now (the hentai game) and in a relationship (Misaki) just so they don't know he's not really doing anything.
The novel, in my opinion, would be the best way of going about it. It focuses on Satou only and gives insight into his mind and how the legal drugs he abuses messes with his way of thinking. One part I can of at the top of my head is when he and Yamazaki go to the park, but Yamazaki, to him, is walking like a robot. Satou questions if a human can have such thoughts, so he smashes his head into a lamp post to confirm his suspicions that he is a robot. "This was bad: It didn't hurt. It didn't hurt at all. I am actually a robot... Thus, I discovered a new truth."
Yamazaki doesn't mention about making a hentai game until page 71, and even then Satou gives up on writing the scenario halfway through the novel, forcing all the burden onto Yamazaki, who feels it is his duty to finish it. In the end it's terrible and, after the disappointment of his revolutionary bomb, he leaves the story in a single sentence. We read as Satou ditches his friend after having agreed to work on a project with him.
There's also the section where Satou downloads 30 gigs worth of child porn on his computer. It shows what some people think are the biggest scums of the Earth. Yamazaki gave him CDs full of the stuff and got him hooked. Satou is in the wrong, of course, but it clearly shows that the person who led him down the path was Yamazaki, who ditches Satou when he attempts to redeem himself in some fashion.
]

I've been wanting to write a script version of NHK ever since I first watched the anime adaption, but my dream would be for a movie version based off the original novel, where nothing is censored and focuses mostly on Satou and his constant failure of trying to get back into society, either from his own failings to others contributing towards it.

One more of him without Takizawa;
http://odeya.jp/diary/2010/1-24.htm

I thought that the comparison between Eden of the East and the Matrix was interesting, but not quite right. While in the Matrix the setting is very well defined, Eden of the East lets things too vague. Gia mentioned fandoms being driven by the questions, but I'd say that there is a slight difference. It seemed more like EotE had forgotten to tell us stuff.

when I'm watching this crap it's animation > over story imo. So most of the titles that i'd consider favorites, I dunno if they'd work as live-action movies.. Like Kemonozume? Incredible series, but I don't think it'd work as a live-action movie :\.

I'm not really against live-action adaptations because "they ruin the source material" or something dumb like that. I'm just kinda against them because I like cartoons, I watch animation. Of course I enjoy live-action movies, but animation is so much more interesting imo. Sure some of the realism-styled titles could adapt easily, like Jin-Roh or Spriggan.. But I mean, the Bazaar chase scene in Spriggan wouldn't be nearly as incredible if it was just done in live-action.

I haven't read the Watchmen comic, but I loved the movie.

The best comic adaptations were the Chris Nolan Batmans, hands down -nothin' better.

As for Bebop and Fruits Basket, I'd be happy with another animated Bebop movie and the more seasons of Fruits Basket (which I still can't believe that haven't done so already considering how popular the manga is).

As for live-action adaptations, I think they're doomed completely unless they have a creative genius like Nolan at the helm, A MASSIVE HOLLYWOOD BUDGET, and World Class Actors (Keanu ain't no Caine, Freeman, Oldman, Bale, Ledger, Ekhart, or Neeson).

To make Fruits Basket work: rip off Twilight. Done.

If the Bebop movie becomes a reality, I'm very curious about who would play Ed and Viscious.

As for the extra credit question, I think Serial Experiments: Lain could be adapted into a very cool and rather creepy movie. Considering that computers travel with us wherever we go now, the script could be adjusted in interesting ways. It would need a skillful scriptwriter and a director who understands cyberpunk and phobic dystopia. What made the anime so memorable is that every scene seemed to be soaked in paranoia sauce. It could make a very intense movie.

Personally, I would love to see Kino's Journey, but I wonder whether it would be too art house-ey for Hollywood. This is one of my favorite shows. My fantasy director for this one would be Jim Jarmusch, with Tom Waits (who works with Jarmusch a lot) as the motorcycle, Hermes.

I also think that Satoshi Kon's wonderful Tokyo Godfathers could be localized to about any large city. My fear with this one is that Hollywood would re-make it overly sentimental and preachy. Kon's original managed to be human while not overly preachy. It would be a gutsy Christmas movie for Hollywood to release, in any case, if they didn't meddle too much with the tone of the source material.

Well, okay! I think a Soul Eater movie could potentially be very cool, provided they got the style and atmosphere right... I'm also hoping that Full Metal Panic movie ends up getting made, it seems like primo Hollywood material. Cool

I agree. Full Metal Panic could definitely use a live action version.

I can't wait to hear about more of the stuff you've got planned at the end of the year! Best wishes for Trauma Team, and if someone asks you for that vampire movie, just do Hellsing. We're done with sissy vampires!

The Bebop movie is better off than I thought. You got my vote by saying you'll keep the whole crew and the Jazz them. Sad we get to wait another, oh, 5 years, but I feel reassured it's in good hands and look forward to it.

Furuba will be a challenge, alright. Good luck pitching. For now I'm ignoring everything else you said about this until there's more info. If you DO land Amanda Seyfreid, though, you've got my support no matter what else happens!

As for suggesting anime, can I say the whole sports anime genre? I guess "sports anime" is considered an oxymoron or something because it's always doomed to fail in America. Maybe they can succeed with live-action's wider audience. It's not like you'd need a big budget, pending on your payroll. Well, unless you tried something extreme like Air Gear. But Cross Game, Eyesheild 21, Slam Dunk, Ginban Kaleidoscope, OverDrive, ect... aren't to far from Rudy, Rocky, Angels in the Outfield, or Hoosiers. Only now you could branch out to kendo, soccer, swimming, archery, even shougi or whatever sport you wanted. It's a done deal.

I'll second Last Exile and Kino's Journey<- you'd have freedom to write your own plot for this one.

Just gunna say it: FLCL is fool-proof, right? The plot could suck as bad as DB:E and it'd still work! Get the SNL guys on it. Oh, If your doing Fruits Basket, why not also add Ranma 1/2? And Escaflowne. Please. Only with a likeable non-emo Hitomi this time.
Yeah, ok fine, those would probably never work.

Chick-flicks: Emma would be good for the Jane Austen audience out there. I'm curious to see an americanized Densha Otoko(Train Man). I also see Skip Beat! having potential, as well. But over anything, I'd love to see a live-action Full Moon wo Sagashite! Seriously, make it happen!! It's so cute, but with this overlaying theme of death in the background.

And last for now (my list is way too long...) CLAMP's too big a name to pass up, even though most of their stuff would be impossible to make. But with the ever-popular sci-fi A.I. theme Chobits could be an option. It would make up for the Astroboy fail. Oh, that just made me think of Kakaider. I know, I'm crazy... just think about it =)

I nominate Monster. It would be awesome in live-action, but I wonder if casting for Johan and Nina/Anna would be difficult.

I second Hellsing! Seriously, I've been wanting this for a long time. And so have lots of other people, judging by the number of fake trailers on youtube. Besides, it doesn't look like we'll be getting the rest of Hellsing Ultimate any time soon, if ever. Crying or Very sad

I think a live-action Fullmetal Alchemist would be awesome, that is, if it's done the right way...

Maybe One Piece and Code Geass could work...?

Really cool episode, Zac. Nice to see that the guy producing the titles is really a fan of them and understands what could and could not work. Anyway, suggestions, huh? Well, I do have some that I would love to see adapted into live-action movies:

Eat-Man: The original manga, and both anime series, was always episodic, making it easy to adapt into a movie since you can just adapt one of the storylines or even try to make your own (or try to see if creator Akihito Yoshitomi would be willing to create a brand-new story for it, much like how he created two new stories for the Eat-Man '98 anime series). The really cool world that's a mix of fantasy and sci-fi would easily appeal to audiences, and I would love to see how Bolt's ability to eat any inanimate object and then reproduce it through his right hand would be done in live-action & CG.

Ashita no Joe: Yeah, it's getting a live-action adaptation in Japan already, but the basic story is also one that can easily be adapted for any country. I'd love to see an American version of Ashita no Joe. Also, even though sports anime and manga seem to be bombs over here, live-action sports films generally seem to be solid performers here.

Saint Seiya: There's been rumors of one actually being made, but that's all it's been: rumors. Anyway, it would definitely be a tough one to do, and would probably best require multiple movies to tell a complete story, but if handled correctly and respectfullly this could be a really cool live-action adaptation... Not to mention that it could be an international hit, since every country except the U.S. and Canada loves Saint Seiya, and if done nicely people would definitely check it out.

BLAME!: If there's any manga that could be covered 100% in one movie, it would definitely be the 10-volume BLAME!, seeing as each volume of that title reads insanely fast. But I would also guess that the sheer detail in the environments used would be lost in translation, unless the whole "Sky Captain/300 greenscreen backgrounds style" would be used, not to mention that a title like this just seems to scream "independent film" more than "Hollywood film".

Yeah, like there's any chance any of my suggestions would be taken seriously... But one can always hope.
