Viz needs to realize it's not the story that counts-- it's the boobies.
Yes, and I'm sure you can generalize about someone based entirely on where they live. Because everyone in San Francisco is a braless nutso protester hippie and everyone in West Virginia is a gun-toting bumpkin hick, right? ![]() |

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! You must be talking about another Viz. I guess everyone forgot about all the edits Viz made to DragonBall on the first release. Or the edits to the Pokemon books to reduce a character's breast size for fear of the soccer moms being offended. Fearless, indeed. |

I am talking about Viz before they began publishing DragonBall, and then later after they began publishing Uncut DragonBall, yet before Shueisha made Viz their sister company and began publishing Shonen Jump.
Viz was in tip-top shape back then IMO.
They werent edited in the monthly issue editions though, only in the graphic novels =3. But hey, its Pokemon, so who cares? That manga was canned in Japan because of those huge breasts anyways, and gave Viz enough complaints as it is, more than DragonBall. Kids and parents couldnt believe that was Pokemon! Wow, the stars are way more blatant than the practically non-existent nipples. It really draws attention, like "WOAH, BOOBIEZ!!! WHaTs uNdEr tHe StaRZ LOL" .. oh Viz.. oh America.. I give up.

I don't know why Viz even bothered to edit out the nipples since it's it's verly noticeable the nipples was hazzy/fadded looked you have to look closely to be able to see it. Heck I didn't see it the first time I had to look closely to actually be able to see the nipples.
The manga-ka toned down the frontal nudity in I's compared to what he did with his other work in DNA2 and in Video Girl AI where the nipples that he drew were clearly visible. Viz released Video Girl AI without editing the nipples but edited I's eventhough the manga-ka toned the way he drew the nipples verly visible ... WTF??? I see Inconsistent standards from Viz. Well anyways here's the unedited image of the pic. Trust me it doesn't even need censoring you can verly even see the nipples that it's laughable that Viz even bothered to edit it: ![]() Last edited by ZODDGUTS on Thu Mar 31, 2005 6:59 am; edited 2 times in total |

They're delicious meat-pies from states around the Great Lakes region of the US? What? I sense a culture gap.... ![]() |

Just noticed on PostModernbarney ( http://www.postmodernbarney.com/ ) a reference to an old news article on ICV2.com that puts this situation into perspective...
http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/4543.html I completely agree with his assessment, which in my mind carries considerably more weight as those coming from a retailer, who often receive the brunt of outrage and legal troubles...it's the fear of bad publicity that was the primary factor in these decisions, not monetary. |

Viz doesn't understand that their edits will hurt us on the retail level. If people find out there is an unedited version somewhere, the stock is left sitting on my shelf for months (or even years). And if it's not commercially available, people will get the scanlations or fansubs or whatever.

That's exactly it... I'm considering buying the Japanese versions now and finding scanlations - I don't think it's proper in this case to buy it twice. It's really the only ethical choice I think I can make. The original author still gets money, I get a legitamate version, and I get an english translation.
I'm not really up for supporting a censored version. I think it's insulting. I really have issues when a company has decided what is okay for me to see. I don't pay them to think for me. I pay for them to offer me an uncensored, translated version... pure and simple. If they can't do that, I'll find another way to get it. |

Nod, nod...at the very least, they should make I"s returnable for full credit for the direct market. It's wrong for direct market retailers to pay for their lack of hutzpah, while the book channel gets them on consignment.

I think someone else has already noted earlier that retail copies are available.
Book purchases are usually made at least 2 months in advance of street date. So the majority of retailers were most certainly in the dark about the edits when they made their orders. |
