Hello everyone. I'm impressed with this website very much, and I would like to contribute to your site.
In Japan, there is a famous web forum called 2-channel (2ch). The 2ch has a lot of Bulletin Board System (BBS) that talk about various topics. Of course, the BBS for Anime is included. Now, I would like to show you the result of "The 10 best Animes of 2002" that was done in Dec 16-23, 2002 at 2ch Anime board. Works being considered for prizes were Japanese Animations broadcast in 2002 (Jan 1, 2002 - Dec 31, 2002). Result 01. Overman King-Gainer (441 points) 02. Haibane Renmei (390 points) 03. Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar (188 points) 04. Azumanga Daioh (164 points) 05. Kanon (138 points) 06. Galaxy Angel 3 (130 points) 07. Sister Princess: Re Pure (126 points) 08. Spiral - Suiri no Kizuna - (125 points) 09. Figure17 (116 points) 10. Juuni Kokki (110 points) Unfortunately, it is an obvious fact that someone voted repeatedly and made his favorite work win this contest, so the top 2 won extraordinary votes. However, the result still shows the tendency of Japanese toward Anime. Therefore, I believe that this information is useful for you. In Japan, there's also this magazine called Newtype that polls their readers for their favorite 20 anime series, favorite 10 male characters, and favorite 10 female characters. ADV now publishes an English version, which contains the most recent results of those polls every month. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but that's very old news. Not to mention, as you conced yourself, probably not a very accurate reflection. |

To me, it didn't sound much like Mr Arrack was interested in other users' opinions. The way he worded himself, ("I would like to contribute to your site"; "However, the result still shows the tendency of Japanese toward Anime.") it sounds like he thought he was contributing a news item. When in fact, as I pointed out, we have much more current and more accurate sources of that kind of information.
However, if people are really interested in going over that (again), there are a number of threads already in existance where discussion of that general subject has already been well established: 2002 in review (semi-OT) Top 10? Best Anime? Favortie anime?? |

see, 2ch isn't like any regular old forum.. it's more like a warzone. ;) there are, quite literally, thousands of topics being discussed simultaneously on something like 60-70 different boards.. it's probably -the- most well-known forum across all of japan. i know that every japanese chatroom i'm in, and every japanese person i've talked to has mentioned (at some point or another) 2ch. anyway, i think it does reflect some of the japanese preference in anime. otoh, i also think there's quite a few lolicons on 2ch (aside from the fact that sugar, azudai, kanon, ga3, sispri, and figure 17 all contain young girls as major characters...) which is not indicitive of the rest of japan. sometimes, reading the 2ch posts can be useful for news from japan... but typically anything of relevance to non-japanese audiences is either mentioned on major japanese fansites or actual japanese newspapers. plus, to read 2ch, you have to delve through quite a few off-topic posts and flames (and ascii art .. if there's one thing that the japanese fonts are good at supporting, it's ascii art.) |

I can't make a top 10 list as the only new anime from 2002 I've seen as of this writing is the new episode of Yokohama Shopping Log from December, and only because I ordered the R2 DVD straight from Japan. I rarely download digisubs, and the only recent ones I've downloaded are a handful of episodes of the most recent (animated) You're Under Arrest series from 2001, as of yet unlicensed by either AnimEigo or ADV... they weren't bad, but not worth the bandwidth I spent downloading them as the filesizes were just too big.
If I had to say what I think the best anime series from 2002 was, I'd say Tenchi Muyo GXP because of my obvious bias, even though I have yet to see a single episode other than the opening sequence, which I downloaded from the official site. |

i'm sorry but i really cannot sit through "Azumanga Daioh". i mean it's a great looking show, but something about it is just way too cutesy. now don't get me wrong it's not like sickening makes your teeth rot cute, but it's just very very girly. the outro "Rasberry Heaven" make me shudder.

Interesting, very interesting. Though I fully understand Chii topping the list. But there's one thing I don't get.
According to Newtype USA, Belldandy of Oh! My Goddess has been lingering in the polls between 4th and 8th. I didn't see her anywhere on that list. Do they exclude characters who aren't new that year on the final tally? |

Yup, hence The Top 100 anime Girls od 2002 :p I was a bit confused by the Vandread girls but the The Second Stage aired from 2001.10.05 2002.01.18 I almost forgot about Slayers Premium too
