So is the reason they don't go ahead and make another TV series (kind of like they did for HunterXHunter) because the story is too violent? Or do the films make a lot more money? It just seems like such a shame because there's so much more to tell and an anime would allow the story to go at a slower and longer pace.

As everyone else is saying, OVAs are obviously the way to go here. Hellsing Ultimate was an amazing adaption. Berserk can be done just as well in OVA format.

As long as we don't have to deal with another "1-2 episodes a year" schedule, I'm ok with it. As good as Hellsing Ultimate is, that's the only real issue I have with that series (especially since it also affects licensing).

That shouldn't be a real problem, since there are only a few chapters released a year and it's running 24 years by now Laughing
They should take their time, the manga won't run away.

Stop already with the movie adaptations of Berserk. The first two movies were never huge successes in Japan; the first movie started at No. 11 and dropped from the chart in the next week, while the second movie started at No. 9 and fell from the chart in the third week.

Don't get me wrong, I love Berserk, but these movies aren't doing anything good to the manga, because the questionable quality of the direction, storytelling, CGI and animations in these movies. Also please, change the director for the films already, I almost got the feeling that the current director got the job just because he designed the characters for the IDOLM@STER games which are Kentarou Miura's (Berserk's author/mangaka) favorite video games.

I really think Madhouse is the perfect Anime Studio for a Berserk movie adaptation or a TV series remake (like what Bones Studio did with the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood remake, though with no ending of the manga in sight in the very near future such TV series remake would be impossible, right?).

Do you...think that the director of the Berserk films is reading this right now?

The Berserk books have been going on for years now, with scores of volumes. How would these films do anything to "hurt" them?

Since my introduction to Berserk has been through these movies I'm certainly welcome to seeing more material adapted. You can count me in on the camp who would prefer OVA's over more movies though. It would be a lot easier and faster in the long run.

Poor you. Being spoiled by this piece of shit adaptation

Well this is interesting news. I wonder how much of what they might have planned cover.

I think it's better to experience an adaptation (even if it's "shit") instead of read the book before, and become a "the book was so much better" snob.

Maybe that's true for books, but this is Berserk. This manga is always better.

I wish we could have an anime that's as good as the book. The first series tried, but then they gave up!

I had heard from day one that this project was supposed to encompass the entire manga, the project would span over 10 years and such.

That sounds insane, but if that's for real, I'm interested.

Sad thing is the famous Golden Age Arc which contained a lot of character development got butchered like meat.
And it seems they're going straight to the Lost Children arc without adapting The Black Swordsman arc.
If that happens, it will be really shit.

from my understanding the reason why they went with the movie format was for 2 reasons: Bigger budget compared to a OVA type of project, but the main reason is because for the movie format has less censorship requirements versus the other formats which would be on daytime TV. I don't recall the bill at the time, but they were talking about passing a bill in Tokyo that would make several well known and liked anime labeled as something along the lines as "child porn". NGE? Yeah especially with all the violence and the hospital scene with shinji and asuka would be classified as child porn and the producers would be heavily fined and regulated.

Movies however wouldn't suffer through any of that. We all know that the manga has some highly questionable subject matter if viewed by puritan eyes, but that is one of the features that makes this series great. I think it's because they would push how much they are allowed to put on film whereas if it was a OVA or another TV series it would be hindered by the censorship.

For what it's worth though, I like the movies. Don't get me wrong, I would perfer them to do the whole series in its entirety.. as in they animate EVERYTHING, but I don't have mega millions that I can send to japan and personally bankroll the project.

Imagine what it would be like if each movie had the budget of a hollywood film (at least 40 mil per film). Imagine what could have happened. But I don't have 300 million to send to 4c and tell them to spare no expense when making the rest, but I'm not wholly offended by what they've offered us so far.
