I'm curious now how GKIDS gets to release this and what contracts they had with Disney's catalog to publish it instead of Disney's other Ghibli releases.

I doubt Disney has an exclusive no-bid contract with Ghibli, that would be outrageous. The movie's themes and ideas just aren't what Disney wants because it's not mass-marketable in the US. That's probably the same with Only Yesterday and why it's never even received a video release here.

That's an interesting analogy and it does make sense. When you look at all the releases by Miyazaki, like Totoro, Kiki, Howl's, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky, etc... they are marketable to families especially children audiences. Then you look at Only Yesterday, Earthsea (which is Goro's) and UFPH they are still presented to young audiences but they would have a low market value to what Disney would want. So it's good that it's up for grabs by someone else. It would be interesting to see Gkids release Only Yesterday instead. Then they might get those cool new designed releases. Oh well. Thanks for that info.
