Oh come on Key, he only spoiler[caused his own sister to orgasm so badly she then begged him to have full sex with her.] Where's the creepy vibe in that? You need to be more accepting of other people's relationships with their siblings; not everyone is as puritanical as you.

I say that with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek.

Nevertheless, I am surprised that you left it out of the review. Not only is it the most infamous scene from the Anime, causing countless fans to never look at a toothbrush the same way again, but it's also the perfect example of the creepy vibe you were talking about.

^...spoiler? I knew there was something creepy about a toothbrush in the series, but not that. Laughing

I hate myself for saying this... but I'm going to buy this. I have said it before, I will say it again, for this price tag they should really consider adding more extras (at least make the book hardcover and on-par with what NISA does); a poster would be cool, or maybe something more unusual since this is a monogatari release. I loved Bakemonogatari, so I can't wait to check this one out.

Eh, I thought it was common knowledge, but obviously not. I'll put it in tags.

Did the japanese release of Nise have the character commentaries like Bakemonogatari? Or did they just never exist in the first place explaining why they aren't on this version?

The reduction in the flashing text was a welcome relief to my eyes and it did have one of my favorite scenes of the whole franchise, but man the fan service got too creepy for my tastes. If my budget allows this year I might pick up Bake, but I'll be skipping Nise.

I still think this is a great series even if it's inferior to its predecessor and has too much focus on creepy fanservice.

I have to assume that this has "reverse importation" fears written all over it. Unlike the Bakemonogatari release (where Aniplex had three years to sell one of the best-selling TV anime series of all time), it hasn't even been a year since Nisemonogatari aired and already, a much cheaper (relatively speaking) box set is out.

Sadly, the "price" for this quick release is a lack of character commentaries. That's...unfortunate.

So let me see if I have this straight: this show tends to be "verbose to the point of irritation", it's not as good as its predecessor, it suffers form a "shortage of plot" and stretches out its material over entirely too much time, and it's not only creepy it has incestuous overtones for good measure. And the above criticisms are all included in a positive review.

I just want to seriously pose this rhetorical question...is there a point where strong artistic design and good music alone aren't enough to salvage a program?

You so funny! As Sturgeon says, If All Men Were Brothers, Would You Let One Marry Your Sister? Laughing

I know it is rhetorical but I'll answer it anyway; they aren't the only things in the show's favour. The dialogue is amazing. Although the plot is thin that doesn't mean it is bad; there are some big revelations. The theme of fake versus real is very strong. And Hitagi's past is brought up and addressed. Plenty of good material. It wasn't a great series but on the balance it is alright.

I think this sum's sums up nisemonogatari quite well. Keep in mind I loved the series but you gotta love the tune~

As if they're the only studio who's ever done that.

Oh i realize this all to well. However it's the only studio where you can make up catchy tune from a 1970's movie of the same name.

The fanservice in Nisemonogatari is certainly over-the-top quite a bit, but I can't help but feel that all the "-monogatari" series are somewhat different from many of the shows that utilize fanservice.

Unlike almost any other show, it seems that the fanservice is more tongue-and-cheek dickery than primarily aimed at the sexualization of its characters.

Certain things like Araragi being truly uninterested sexually in his sisters or in Hachikouji despite his actions against them or the bit where spoiler[Kanbaru tries to attack him for making her lose the play on words] come to mind as particular reasons for my thinking on this.
