I can agree with you on that. My initial post is aimed at the R1 fans who seem to be aligned with the unfounded and greatly exaggerated fears of reverse importation coming from Japanese executives.

Also, if Japanese otaku made saving money a priority, it would be far cheaper just to rent Gundam UC from any Tsutaya. And if they want to see it again, rent it again. It's Gundam. It won't be going anywhere. Or they could wait a few months and get a cheaper used copy (though being Gundam, the used price won't be all that much lower).

Even with these options, though, for some reason a whole lot of fanboys run out to get the best and shiniest on the day of release.

Brand mentality and that collectors want to own something.

The fact that 4 out of 5 of the customers who bought Gundam Unicorn 6 in BD chose the pricier limited edition shows that Japanese otaku love spending money on fancy stuff. In my view this also shows that reverse importation is a big, big myth. Japanese executives are crazy if they think Japanese otaku will buy bare bones R1 releases over their fancier domestic releases.

The casuals (or the not-that-hardcore) would probably buy those barebones releases. More room to store stuff.

The question is if these reverse imports are that numerous to negatively affect the Japanese anime industry. I would say no.

I honestly do not see what those bulky NISA boxes have to be considered premium. First, the boxes are too big to fit in regular shelves. The books are overrated; they tend to have too many screen caps, and you can find some of the sketches online.

I have two of those boxes because I love AnoHana and Bunny Drop. But I would happily exchange my gigantic boxes for regular editions. If you want great R1 premium releases, look at the Utena box sets released by RighStuf/Nozomi.

And for the people who says that reverse importation isn't a thing, major Japanese blogs cover the NA releases of popular anime just to tell people they can get it cheap now.

I for one think it is a thing and not just a myth.

I for one think it is a thing and not just a myth.

Unless Japanese executives present selling figures that show that reverse importation has resulted in a reduction of 10% or more in loss of profits, I will keep saying it is a myth.

I will buy that there are people in Japan who frequently import R1 sets. The thing is that the people who reverse import are probably more casual and/or money conscious costumers, who were never going to buy the expensive domestic releases to begin. Japanese executives are delusional if they think long-time, hardcore, big spending otaku will give up their fancy domestic releases in favor of bare bones R1 releases

And even if reverse importation was a big problem, you and the other importers should make up for the profit losses resulting from Japanese importing R1 releases.Wink

Yay! I've made a small contribution to some of the titles listed. Gundam Unicorn BD 6 LE, Nanoha A's SSE, Girls und Panzer BD 3, and Chuunibyou BD 4 are some of what's in an AmazonJP box that's currently heading my way via Hong Kong. Shin Sekai Yori sure wasn't going to make that list, but it's in the box, too. They'll probably arrive tomorrow.

I considered Love Live!, but there's way too much ugly 3D character CG in it for me to want to buy it. The 3D might have been (barely) tolerable if I'd found the plot to be more interesting.

Oh wow, Maoyu sold half of what I thought it would. Tamako is low as well, particularly with an event ticket. GJ-bu saddens me but for such a completely obscure LN I guess it's as good as it could get. And good to see the Panzers continue to dominate. Just hope Mizushima and the rest of the staff get to working on a second season/Little Army in the near future.

I got Girls Und Panzer 3, LoveLive! 1, Shinsekai Yori 5, Da Capo III 1, Asura and BTOOOM 5 last week. All awesome, the Lulunee cloth D.C.III lifesize 170x60cm poster is... well, not something I can hang for fear of it being seen LOL

Shinsekak Yori 5 did rank but poorly, around 600 total at the bottom of the top 100. BTOOOM and Asura didn't rank at all...
