For me, when I'm reading something with a lot of action like Black Lagoon, I tend to listen to heavy punk like Big Black or Operation Ivy; but when I'm reading more tranquil manga like Children of the Sea, I listen to a lot of classical and world music, depending on what I'm reading.
Some manga have very specific playlists; like Azumanga Daioh! or Soul Eater.

What do you listen to while reading manga?

I'm the same. If I really want to focus on something (studying or manga), then I can't have any sound in the background. The sole exception to this seems to be when I read manga in class--- turns out I can tune out the teachers just fine. xD

I usually sit in a coffee shop when I read Manga so I listen to the coffee brewing the whole time, which I find relaxing. If its anywhere else though, its dead silent.

I tend to have iTunes on in the background most of the time while working (on the computer) or reading (in my room, near the computer), so I just listen to whatever it feels like playing for me. Occasionally I'll be in the mood for a specific musician/band to match a work (like, while I worked on lettering Dragon Girl for Yen Press, I listened to a lot of TM Revolution because the mangaka is a big fan of him) but usually I'm not so deliberate.

I was reading Nodame Cantabile recently though, and for that series I found my assorted jpop library distracting, so I think I turned off the music for that.

I usually have Pandora on, but the particular stream I'm listening varies.

I always like to listen to music while reading manga, but something instrumental and unobtrusive. Usually classical or ambient music. The last.fm "Ralph Vaughn Williams" artist radio gets a lot of use, or anime soundtracks (especially when the anime and manga are the same), or stuff like Thom Brennan/Tangerine Dream/Doyeq/etc.

My ITunes library, set to randomize. I'm really good at multi-tasking so listening and reading simultaneously is pretty easy.

Usually some thrash metal like Metallica or Megadeth, though occasionally some death metal works too, like Opeth or In Flames. Kinda depends on the manga, really. Like, Master of Puppets goes great with Soul Eater, but Countdown to Extinction goes better with Fruits Basket.

I generally choose not to listen to anything while reading...but if there are things on in the background that I don't control, they don't bother me. I do sometimes listen to Richard Strauss while reading, though... Smile

Usually I don't listen to anything, but sometimes have the TV turned on. Basically I try reading with as little distractions as possible. Otherwise, if there's distraction, I'll end up reading the text without absorbing it.

I also do not listen to anything while reading manga. I find that if I do something like that, whenever I'm reading anything again after having read it a first time while listening to music, even if the room is silent, I can't read the same words without the music coming to mind.

I'm also someone who doesn't listen to music when I read manga. I just like to focus all my attention so I can really immerse myself into the art and story. That said, I have no problems reading manga in a cafe or anyplace with some ambient noise. Then again, maybe I'm just bad at multitasking Sad

While reading Vinland Saga I listened to some viking/folk metal from finland (like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv0CRm94ObE). Though I am a metal head, so I am always listening to metal, I actually though that Ensiferum's sound fits well with Vinland Saga's atmosphere.

And I read the whole of Gunnm while listening to Judas Priest. I also think that Priest's music fits with the manga's atmosphere.
