If it ends up with actual physical releases, I'd be perfectly happy to buy them so long at the japanese version is also on the discs, completely unedited and names intact. I'm not sure if the UK would even get a release though, since IIRC Star Blazers was never shown here. |
It was on the Beeb back in early '80s, cause it's what got me into anime in the first place.
I had to import the first "Iscandar" arc, but I couldn't get the second and third series as an import because of shipping blocks and OOP. |
Well there you go I'm way too young to have been around then!
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this develops. I'd be very glad to see a western release for this, so long as we get access to the original japanese version alongside any localised, edited version.

I cannot wait to see this series whether it is called Yamato or Star Blazers 2199. I watched the original series, and Loved it. So far all the clips and trailers have me interested in this, even though Leiji Matsumoto is not involved.

Oh right, good point, that was a fantastic surprise (I'll be buying that when it comes, day 1!). I'd be happy with Funi getting this awesome series.

Really? Never heard of a BBC broadcast for Star Blazers before. Battle of the Planets, Ulysses 31, Mysterious Cities of Gold and Thunderbirds 2086, et. al. yes, but never Star Blazers.

Well I am glad it will be streaming legally.
As others have said I just hope too much is not changed.

I hope Funi is getting this. They better not change any names or edit out stuff.

Well it was 1980/81. I'm pretty sure it was the Beeb, as I remember all those titles you listed too, but it could have been an ITV channel as well. After 33 years my memory could be a little fuzzy, but I know it was on and it was the first taste of anime for me, though back then I didn't know it as "anime". It was that foreign looking cartoon that wasn't silly slapstick all the time, or American. It had an interesting story and deep subplot, just completely different than any other animation series I'd seen before then. It wasn't until after seeing Tenchi Muyo back in 2000 when the anime gas burner inside my head really got ignited, that looking back I'd then realised what StarBlazers was and actively persued buying it as a collection only then realising still further I'd left it too late. DVD's were just starting out like Blue rays are today and I managed to get an R1 copy of Iscandar. 'tis reason I bought my first DVD player, multi region of course, so StarBlazers has been an influance of first's for me for some time now.

Well, anything's possible, it's just that I've never seen any reference to a UK broadcast in newspaper records, or in Manga Mania/Anime UK, etc. There was Star Fleet, but that wasn't exactly anime, and that was in 1982 anyway. A mystery for another time, perhaps...

There's been no mention of streaming or any other licence at this stage. All they've mentioned is the marketing name outside Japan. Personally, I don't see this getting any sort of licence outside Japan before it finishes airing, or at least until after the 7th and final Blu-Ray disc is released. Since the B-Ds have English subs, they'll want to maximise their sales of those and any streaming licence would eat into that. There are people who have been importing the Blu-Rays from Japan since they started coming out last year.

That fact by itself doesn't guarantee that they'll licence the 2199 series. Admittedly, Funi's the frontrunner but it could as easily go to one of a number of companies depending on how they plan to market it.

Well OK, if you really feel the need to change the name.

Mixed feelings. I love Yamato. But they're not putting their best foot forward by titling it "Starblazers" like before, and I'm not calling Susumu Kodai "Derek Wildstar". Ever. He's Susumu Kodai. Captain Juzo Okita, not Captain Avatar. It's the Yamato, not the Argo.
That being said, Starblazers was at least a bit progressive in its approach for the time period. It's just that it's really outdated for these days.
I suppose if the subtitles are accurate to the Japanese script, I can put up with it. But I'd still prefer "Space Battleship Yamato" in the title.
