For those asking, seems like GKids' deal for theatrical and home video rights to the Ghibli library is similar to the old Disney-Tokuma deal that gave Disney theatrical and home video release rights to nearly all the Ghibli film library.

The reason Grave of the Fireflies isn't part of the deal is because the film's the only one in the Ghibli film library not released under publisher Tokuma Shoten. The film's owned under a different publisher called Shinchosha Publishing. Since Grave was originally released in a double-feature theatrical run with My Neighbor Totoro back in 1988, two different animation teams from Ghibli were formed to animate both projects with Tokuma providing support for Totoro and Shinchosha, the original publisher of the GotF novel source material, doing such for the animated adaptation of Grave. This is why GotF was released under Central Park Media and later, Sentai Filmworks.

Who knows how long Sentai has the license to Grave of the Fireflies?

The fact is that the DVD and Blu ray releases from CPM and Sentai for that film have been EXCELLENT, among the best of the Ghibli films released in the West.

What I'm more disappointed to see is that alternate English dub tracks were NOT included with the Disney releases including the original English dubs for My Neighbor Totoro (which is excellent and should have been re-released by Disney), Kiki's Delivery Service (by most reports NOT so good), Castle in the Sky (pretty sure this was dubbed before Disney did their dub), and the alternate English done for Secret of Arriety done around the same time as the Disney dub.
Apparently, GKids has not optioned the alternate dubs, either.
The original Streamline dub for My Neighbor Totoro is available on the tens of thousands of VHS, DVD, and laserdisc copies distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Video before the Totoro license passed onto Disney.

Disney didn't option Grave of the Fireflies for obvious reasons -- it didn't fit their family-friendly image. There were various reasons for passing on about 5 Ghibli features.
The Ghibli shorts will probably never get released outside of the Ghibli museum anytime soon since they're used as a revenue source to support the museum's operation

The Streamline dub of Totoro was indeed well done. It was arguably Carl Macek's finest hour. That said, while it is unfortunate that that version is no longer in existence, there's nothing remotely bad about the replacement dub by Disney. Nostalgia aside, I liked Dakota and Elle Fanning's performances as Satsuki and Mei. There was a genuine chemistry between them that I felt really benefitted their performances. Not that Lisa Michelson and Cheryl Chase weren't good, they were and still are, but I feel that having actual children in the roles of these two gives an authenticity to them that you don't get from the FOX dub. The only weakness IMO was that the opening and ending songs were a little too gungho, but I can live with them.

The Kiki dub by Streamline is mostly done well, although I do have quibbles with it. Tombo's voice is distracting and Jiji sadly isn't as memorable as Phil Hartman. Lisa Michelson does an adequate job as Kiki, but I liked Kirsten Dunst more. It does have the asset of not taking as many liberties, but considering that Disney dialed back on their alterations for their dub (for better or worse -- for me, it's worse, as I liked Hartman's additional commentary and was quite angry about the lines being cut), it no longer bears the distinction of being the only dub not to make any music changes since they were reverted.

Castle in the Sky's older dub was done by Magnum Studios and picked up for distribution by Streamline. Sorry to say, it's nowhere near the level of the Streamline dub for Totoro OR Kiki. The acting, scripting, and production values are all below par, with some distractingly laughable lines of dialogue: "Now say bye-bye!" and dreadfully dull acting. Say what you will about Disney's dub (I personally consider it a very underrated dub despite the somewhat older leads and chattier script), but it's much better acted and written than this by far (last part of Sheeta's speech notwithstanding). That GKids offers the option to hear the Disney dub with either the Japanese score OR the rescore by Hisaishi (my personal preference) is the best of both worlds, even though I miss the extra lines.

Porco Rosso also had an older dub prior to Disney's. Like Castle's older dub, it was done quickly and cheaply by an unknown company and picked up for distribution by Streamline. And it's every bit as embarrassing and awful. ("The dirty rotten SCUUUUM.") Lots of bad lip-synching and dreadfully flat acting. Like Castle, Disney's dub of this movie is far superior and thankfully devoid of any such laughable lines.

I haven't seen the alternate Arrietty dub, but it's been awhile since I saw the Disney dub. I remember that being fairly good, but as that wasn't my favorite Ghibli movie, I don't have a lot of memories of it.

old comment but it always bears pointing this out.

You are aware there are two versions of most of the Disney dubs, right? Kiki's was probably the only one really hurt in the rework. The first DVD release was full of great ad-libs by Hartman that filled the space nicely. Garofalo also got a couple in too. The rework removed any lines that didn't have a Japanese counterpoint. If you watch the "behind the mic" feature you'll notice some lines not in the current version. The only improvement is the removal of the wrong-headed "I'm here, Kiki" Jiji line the first dub put in at the end.
