I went with 2002 , because of :
Ai yori yoshi , Full metal panic , Kanon , and Ghost in the shell .
So that 20% of my top 10 there and 20% of my top 20 too.

Only 1 point behind 2006 & 2007 now .

I use this for my year information.

2009 only 3% , no A Certain Magical Index or Fullmetal Alchemist BrotherHood fans out there ?

If I may ask, are you sure that Toei's 2002 Kanon adaptation is the one you'd place in your personal top ten, as opposed to KyoAni's far more popular 2006 version?

I can't seem to vote on this poll. Sad

Nonetheless, I had to think over this one quite heavily as I've seen hundreds of titles within the span of that length of time and had to recall when specifically they premiered. Going through all I watched, would have to say 2006 was my favorite year of the bunch. That year spoiled me rotten with plenty of anime that caught my interest and attention from popular hits (notable ones being Death Note, Nana, Ouran High School Host Club, Black Lagoon, Welcome to the NHK, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) to some hidden and underrated gems (Bartender, Hataraki Man, FLAG, Kemonozume, Story of Saiunkoku, Simoun, The Third: Girl With the Blue Eye, Zegapain).

So I've* done math, and the answer is 1997 - if it counts!

I've only rated three shows from that year, and the average score is the highest among actually any year I've watched anime in. The only real reason for that is because End of Evangelion, but hey.

If I'm only counting years where I've rated more than 10 anime, then it's apparently 2003. Planetes and Kino no Tabi aired that year, so I'm okay with these results.

Sure, you could say simply taking the average score from a bunch of anime and saying the highest year is your preferred is simplifying all of it, but hey, I'm nothing if not boring.

* Actually no I haven't, anilist has

I would vote for Rurouni Kenshin because that was the first anime that i watched. At that time the fight is really amazing to see.

I actually have an extensive list of favorite anime, and I am so happy that my childhood has been memorable because of this series.

Rurouni Kenshin: Wandering Samurai
Hunter x Hunter
Death Note
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Bleach
Special A (SA)
Fushigi Yugi
Cardcaptor Sakura

Definitely would have to be 1998 for me. While the anime released that year I wouldn't see for a couple years when they finally hit the U.S., it was these animes like Trigun, Bebop, SEL, Silent Mobius, Lodoss War, and more that really got me going into anime.

However, more generally, anything from the 90s and early 00s were the anime I spent a large amount of time on. So I almost could go with any year through this period and it would be gold.

(Hurts me not to vote '96 due to RuroKen being released, however by sheer volume of memorable anime, '98 had it beat.)

2011 and 2012 were the best years.

They quality of art was already high and quality of story was still high.

Before 2010 something, quality or art was still low. Technology was still developing.

After 2013 story and plot went to stone age. Where even axolotl or amoeba could write a more compelling and cohesive plot that actually makes sense.

1997:
It had two of my all-time favorite anime TV series: Berserk and Revolutionary Girl Utena
It had many all-time classic anime movies: Princess Mononoke, Perfect Blue, and The End of Evangelion

As for lesser things that I still really liked, it also had Noiseman Sound Insect and Kero Kero Chime

//But srsly, if Utena's airing ran just a little longer, I'd give it to 1998. Berserk ran into 1998.
