I don't get why you would support new anime companies even with all the other stuff aside. Its already apparent that the current companies cannot hold out. Aniplex and Discotek only popped out because they are extremes. Aniplex is essentially a producer of anime, so distributing it makes sense. Discotek only licenses really old products that are probably very cheap. Sentai/Funi are the only distributor's that have had any normal staying power, and yes I am counting Sentai's time as ADV.

All these new companies will do is give false hope and then you will end up with things like Squid Girl or Zetsubo Sensei. Where companies who don't have the assets essentially end up either leaving a show partially complete, or flat out end up blocking more capable companies from putting it out, and by the time their license expires the other companies have passed on interest.

Im sure fans of this site who are primarily manga readers and buyers can attest to how many series are released part way and then discarded, only to leave the fans incomplete series on their shelves.

I like the show in question and don't mind more anime releases in the West, but I want something stead fast and proven, and not some kid who likes anime and has no lick of business sense falling flat on his face. Media blasters aside, if a company like Bandai can basically go under despite having a monster franchise like Gundam in tow, what makes you think this guy will succeed.

I would just rather not get my hopes up, and dream someone else some day down the road will release it.

Of course they won't succeed it you don't support them, what a crazy outlook. Besides this is an OVA so the worry should be limited.

Yeah, Gundam is a "monster franchise" - in Japan. Sadly, it never had that kind of status in North America. Wing was pretty popular and Unicorn seems to have been putting up satisfying numbers, but the franchise never even came close to being that popular outside of Japan.

@CrownKlown
Bandai is a bad example in any case. By all reports here, they were doing OK financially but they were shut down by the Japanese parent company in a corporate reorganization.

Also this should be a "done in one" OVA so there is no later issue to miss out on. If the new company does well, by the time they get to longer series they should have a visible track record.

Not only that,he's currently a registered sex offender. http://www.bustedoffenders.com/georgia/newnan/sex-offenders/corey-steven-maddox/250093cd9

This the official link for the Georgia State Sex Offender registry. It is lacking in specifics like the above link, which is surprising compared to some other states.

wow... hopes for seeing this great anime released have just been dashed to nothing... aye.

Considering the owner has a scam history within the industry itself, I'm more worried if these are actual pressed DVDs and not some startup just throwing stuff onto a DVD-R. This is not like the Eve no Jikan kickstarter project where people are actually serious.

I love HanTsuki but will be staying away from this license until I hear good reviews about the product itself. Not to mention the product itself is a bit on the pricey side. 6 episodes of a 7 year old title?

I also should note that promising an English dub + commentary and interviews in a 1-2 month time frame (assuming goal is hit on August 1) is not exactly reasonable, especially from a startup. Certainly ambitious but I can't see it being even remotely good considering they have to raise even more money to pay for the voice actors/actresses, time audio, add credits, remake the entire video just for the English dub and have it all packaged and ready to ship by the street date.

Furthermore, being able to promise another license within 1 week if the other purchase limit is hit on December 25 seems also ambitious considering you would have to have it already in the works by then. These are big promises coming from a no name company.

Lastly, I'd hate to see HanTsuki get a poor reputation in the west as it's one of the best light novel adaptations to date not to mention in its genre.

It doesn't matter to me how old the series is as long as the story, characters, artwork and overall plot still hold up. I'm actually willing to 130 dollars for a complete higursahi set sub only in america would ever come out.

Here's an idea: Why not have Zac and Justin invite Mr. Maddox to the next ANNcast? That way he can give them the rundown of CS as a company and fill them in on his plans for the future, as well as tackle any concerns or questions regarding the legitimacy of his actions?

I think it'd make for a great episode. It's not everyday you get a brand new anime distributor, ya know.

You know, I think this is a great idea. It'd be nice to hear his side of the story, and I think Zac and Justin are great when it comes to interviews.

Anyone else think that it might involve anime/manga images?

Yes. That's the first thing that came to mind when reading this thread.

This news piece would seem to indicate that he had actual photographs of actual children. So that tosses out the "maybe he was busted cause he had manga/anime/hentai."

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/gwinnett-man-accused-of-possessing-child-porn/nFCxj/

With that said, this part is the only part that makes me wince. As for his prior business attempts, I remember when he made an announcement for some one off ONA and then it was found out he made a miscalculation in not having the proper paper work signed, or distribution agreements in place or the right people in place to guide him. This seems more like someone who had a few thousand in his pocket, stars in his eyes and a pie in the sky dreams that he was going to take on the anime world and take it by storm only to be slapped with the reality that business in entertainment (in a niche entertainment) is hard to do. Since the title never came out, I assume mistakes were made and he learned from them. Crimson Star seems to be the result.

So hopefully everything is in place. He has contracted out work to the right people, he's got his rights lined up and distribution ready to ship out the product. But please, do your QC work. Don't have funky disc mistakes like Illumitoon or Smore. Get your audio and visuals working properly. It would be nice if everything works out and more titles can be released here in America. As for the dub, some of the early ones from the major studios were terrible, but out of that came some of our best VAs to this day. If it is done competently, that's all I can ask for.

As for the past charges against Correy Maddox, I would say this...STAY BEHIND THE CURTAIN. Do not give people a reason to pause in supporting the title and company by allowing the past to cloud it. I know you are running the company and its your money and all that, but your name and past seems to be bringing people out who are detracting from the title itself (which after reading the synopsis and hearing people talk positively about it intrigues me). Have someone else be point on PR and convention presentations. It seems you are in charge of social media (twitter, facebook, etc), I would suggest hiring a third party company or hire someone else to handle social media interactions. Do not go on ANNCast or any other podcast to try to sell the product, have someone else do that. Although I have no idea if Zac or Justin would pry into the sex offender part since it does not relate to the anime, they probably would ask about your past business endeavors. I only know of your first attempt at an ONA, if there are other ventures that soured for you, it may be wise not to revisit that. Again, I hope this title leads to more being released by Crimson Star, but for the first title, since so much weighs in on its success, try to limit anything that could detract from its buzz.

EDIT: I recalled the name Corey Maddox being mentioned before on ANNCast and here is a thread about that. Some people here do not seem impressed by the person which only confirms my belief that this person should stay behind and do the heavy admin lifting while someone else handles promotion.

To the person above me if that's the case then I have no reason to support this scum, I don't care what his intentions are or what he is trying to do. Quite frankly I don't give damn and I hope more people use some damn common sense when it comes to this issue.

I can report that Corey has sent me what appears to be a signed license agreement between Crimson Star and Pony Canyon.

I'm not really into dubs, but the article makes it sound like they're doing what is essentially a fandub, so I don't think it'd be that costly for them in that regard.

Wait, but even if they get total amateurs to record a dub and it sucks mad D, they've still gotta pay people for their work-- it's not a fandub but a professionally made product. I'm sure they're thinking of ways to save money on production, but they're not going to just have folks work for free!

I personally would steer clear from pre-ordering directly from their site. Unless a more reliable retailer like Rightstuf puts up a listing then I would be cautious.

We're talking to Corey about carrying the title when it's released in September. Will depend on his terms and assurances that we will be covered if there are any problems with the release.

I posted this in the retail thread already, but it looks as if the DVD is now up for preorder at the official Amazon store.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DPI644A/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p74_d4_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=09MZ19JRKKE7W1GV74QC&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846

That's not a marketplace vendor, either. That's Amazon itself.
