I kinda half agree with you, Bara_Megami. When browsing the stuff at bookstores before, I've definitely seen worse attempts at "Amerimanga", but this one certainly isn't the best, either.

C.S. Lewis I think is perhaps the best example of deliberately putting a Christian message into a story, and yet managing to not completely preach at people or otherwise alienate non-Christians. It'd be nice if that approach were favored more often then this sort that comes very close to outright preaching.

I think the cover art has a nice palette of colours...but I think it would be better to simply make the manga promote positive messages without specifically making it Christian. Maybe it wouldn't seem so obviously preachy then.

But I have a great idea to make Serenity a big seller. Make the lead more busty and give her a short skirt that gets blown up by the wind every now and again. Instead of fanservice, we can refer to it as "the rapture". Laughing

And with that, I think I've just reserved a seat for myself in the hot place! Wink

It's Superbook and Flying House all over again!

OMG, Superbook! I live in NYC, and the only Korean channel available on public television got bought over the summer by some *scary* South Korean Christian Sect (headed by Rev. Jae Rock Lee).

So, now all the Korean programming on that channel is oriented for that Christian church. And they were airing Superbook. I flipped when I watched the credits and realized it was anime!

The channel's not an improvement at all from when they used to air just Korean soap operas and historical period dramas.

I've never head of Flying House though.

that was hella funny... (no pun intended, it's north-cal slang)
Laughing

Even as a Catholic, I find this disgusting. Freedom of speech not withstanding, disguising Christianity as entertainment and releasing this propoganda upon the american youth is... ...Wait, what am I saying?... ...It's the norm in the United States of Jesus. Maybe I'll pick up Serenity at Borders along with a Passion of the Christ DVD...
¤¦Edit¦¤ it's also rather ugly Rolling Eyes ¤¦Edit¦¤
Truthfully: It's probally going to fail. I can see religious wackos buying this comic for their kids, but all the other sane "tween girls" are more likely going to want to buy raunchier romantic comedy mangas. (or fruit baskets)

Food for Thought:
I wonder if the Christian right ever boycotted Pokemon since the monsters would "evolve".

The idea of a Christian manga isn't too bad, but after reading the preview I think it's corny and has awful, awful art. :\

I still think the Old Testament as a whole would make a great manga/anime; there's enough gore/sex to make the average /b-tard relatively happy, and it would still describe an interesting enough story to make it worth a watch.

Having been raised in a christian family and being christian myself, it's difficult to completely renounce something that supports it, but it doesn't look any good.
Its a problem with far too many aspects of christian media - their attempt at video games has been disasterous.
So it would be good to see something decent from this company, but even as far as Amerimanga goes, the story looks perhaps even more basic than the artwork.

Yes indeedy.

Although it's technically been done as what I would call a webcomic of sorts...

I introduce thou to... The Greatest Story Ever Told...with lego!

Check out the subsection called "The Law". Laughing

Yeah I believe there was already a Serenity comic make up original names people.

Yeppers. It was published as monthlys last summer, now available as a collection in a GN. Of course, I don't know if this was a case of accidentally naming it the same thing, but still... weird.

"United States of Jesus"! Hee! Laughing It does feel like that sometimes, doesn't it?

I do not believe that those who find themselves threatened or opressed by the penetration of Christian dogma in the arts and entertainment have anything to worry about. My gut instict is that the material presented here will be as baseless, ungrounded, fantastic, and diverting away from the essentials and foundations of Christian doctrine as other past attempts (Highway to Heaven, Touched by an Angel, Left Behind, Chrono Crusade, 7th Heaven, The Da Vinci Code). If anything, I expect it to dilute the Christian message with humanist/socialist undertones. Otherwise, it can't sell.

Come on now, a huge chunk of the Bible is written as Poetry in its native tongue. Toss in the musical and story-telling arts while you're at it.

Dude, this can't be anywhere near as bad as the dreck the wacko Hollywood leftists polluted the airwaves with when they all got together to foist Captain Planet and the Planeteers on us.

Junk science, communist propoganda, and scare-tactics, oh my!

Sure, everyone in the entertainment industry should stick exclusively to propoganda campaigns that directly support their profits: anti-piracy campaigns, setting an every-lower bar for marketing tactics, and making sure that you can't wipe your nose without a corporate lawyer. [/sarcasm]

It had been done long ago. Why not just license it?

With all of the sex and violence in the OT, it might not be such a bad idea. If they really wanted this thing to work, though, they'd write a good story with Christian themes instead of trying to write a Christian story. These "Christian alternatives" to pop culture really annoy me sometimes.
