I've wanted to see the Fuccons since it was reviewed on Something Awful, and have Fuccons wallpaper on my desktop, so I was very amused by the new skin.
Seriously folks, if you think it's ugly, that's fine. But all those screaming "sell out" need to shut the hell up.
News flash folks: Anime News Network is a business. Tempest and others do it for a living. It's not their job to "fight the power" or "stick it to the man". Do you get upset when Newtype or Anime Insider changes their cover??

The one I found came in four parts under their Features section. "The Madness of 'OH! Mikey'" Part 1 & Part 2, and "The Return of 'OH! Mikey'" Part 1 & Part 2.

I was a bit hesitant to ask this, but I think it can't be avoided by now:
Who works for ANN full time, who works part time, who works on a submission basis (e.g. reviews), and who works for free (volunteering)?
As far as I know, only tempest works full time for sure, plus probably Zac. Many senior staff members are students and can't work full time at ANN. Reviewers and columnists are probably paid per article. All Encyclopedic staff are volunteers.

Actually I do. Lots of seinen manga magazines feature swimsuit idols on the front cover to attract casual readers, and the trend has been spreaded to some shounen manga magazines. Honestly, I'm annoyed by them. If I want to see real women in swimsuits, I'd buy something else; I don't need them on my manga magazines -- which might explain why I don't read anthological magazines anymore.

While it can't be argued that it is indeed advertising, it is still not a blatant attempt at getting one to buy or view the Fuccons. It's much less annoying then ads I must watch on TV, which people would not call any TV station a sell-out for showing ads, and it does not tell me to "Run out and buy it now!" or anything of that nature.

No, but on the flip-side, the covers of magazines (mostly) serve to bring attention to material appearing in the mag that issue. (Although there's naturally money in.. I'll qualify it with some cases, as to how and what appears where and how big). They'll put whatever on the cover that sells the mag (and gets advertiser money rolling in).

Boy, such a response. I'm almost nervous to see what happens with this week's Shelf Life.....
I'm probably going to say this a lot, this week, but Curse you, Today's Special!

Not "probably", I am ANN's only other full-time employee, aside from Tempest.
For now, anyway.

Is there a thread about that talking Bugs Bunny ad? I have no problem with non-obtrusive visual ads of any sort, but I cannot stand ads with audio, since I often leave my volume up high when I'm not expecting to hear things, and having Bugs Bunny scream "What's up doc?!" is not fun.

So will we have a new Fuccon banner every day? One for every character I´m guessing. First it was that James guy and now it´s Mikey. But yeah the creepy girl furthest to the right is cut off on my desktop but my laptop is widescreen and displays it perfectly.
I think this advertising campaign is working better for ANN than ADV. I´ve read that about 4 people will pick this title up. Every one else seems to hate the series and there are so many, about 3, new people due to this post. ANN wins IMO because ADV pays them and has got them new registered people and I rememeber when I first registered, my first forum, and thought I was only going to check it like once a week and now I check this website for the latest news every day.

LOL. That's got me to a couple of times. Just sitting down and of course my volume is rather loud because I always leave it there from when I listen to music while playing Task Force Dagger and need it loud to hear the music over gun fire. And then you think it's nice and quiet and BOOM....What's up doc?. Well the answer to what's up doc is my headache. Doesn't happen to me very often that I hit that ad but when I do it can scare the heck out of me because of how loud I made it.

No, it hasn't been running "just fine". It has been running thanks to a lot of people sacrificing a lot of free time. That's not exactly a sustainable way to run a website. Have you ever wondered why so many good websites seem to disappear from the face of the web? That's because the kids who create those websites eventually start having less free time and can't afford to keep the website running anymore. Turning ANN into a full-fledged professional website ensures we can keep it running as long as there's an anime industry.

Going from a fansite to a business is a weird transition to make. Maybe tempest's got it all figured out but I sure don't.

I trust you guys will do a good job. Recently, the most famous Chinese ACG-themed website / forum / *cough* tracker (with 3M registered users and over 8M visitors) was collapsed within just a month after its commercialization.
Watch your steps and Godspeed.

Well, ANN has been commercial for 3+ years now... If you count "accepting ads for money" as commercial, we've been commercial since the site was launched.
If you count "trying to make a profit" as commercial, Justin and Isaac both ran the site with profit in mind, but when Cookie and I took it over profit was not a goal for a long time....
When I was no longer able to run the site in my spare time without dying of stress, making the site capable of supporting full time salaries became a goal.
