"Oops."

This is, what, the third story I've read where someone in Canada defined all anime as porn? You'd think one of them would try putting it through Wikipedia or a recent dictionary.

Canada, where gay marriages are okay, the French can have their own little subcountry, marijuana is labeled illegal but is still easily accessible, but PARLAMENT FORBID those Japanese people have sex in their cartoons, because then they'll have to crack down something fierce.

Forward thinking, indeed. :/

Somebody up in Canada has gotten very confused. Hentai and anime are distinct things. By this Canadian definition, Hamtaro could be porn because it's an anime. (Don't tell the Ham-Hams that, you know how fast hamsters breed already.)

Another case of someone seeing the extreme and assuming it's the mean. (^_*)

As it has been shown in the past, people underestimate the ignorance and wrath of governments.

Freedom is fleeting. If we don't stand up for anime and manga, then who will?

If you check the sources for the fact sheet you'll see that with the exception of one news article, everything was based on Wikipedia entries. The entries are actually very good, which makes it all the more mystifying why the fact sheet is so confusing. I think it's partly unfamiliarity with the subject and partly sloppy (hurried?) writing that fails to consider how a reader might perceive the text.

For once I'll grudgingly admit this is a situation where the old "blame Canada" seems to apply. And this just days after an Albertan publishes those blasted cartoons.

We're having a bad week in print. Confused

WOAH WOAH WOAH, stop the WTF train -

A website sanctioned by the Canadian government quoted Wikipedia, the "free encyclopedia anyone can edit?"

Bravo there, Canada. Brav-f'ing-o.

Shouldn't someone alert the Japanese Embassy in Canada or something?

The Japanese would probably object to their whole Animation industry being branded as a child pornography racket. A "strongly worded" diplomatic memo might stop these misconceptions, at least at the government level.

This is really just the usual legal types getting their facts wrong. Look at the PMRC. I remember reading an article by one of those types that said something like headbangers were sadists & nu wave masochists so they could do well with each other in crowds. I also love hearing patrol cops giving their opinion about various "satanic" grafitti when half of it isn't satanic symbols at all.
It's like Judas Priest said-people who know nothing about the music telling people who'll never listen Priest worshiped the devil.
Now mommies & daddies can get all worried about the secret lives of pokemon.

The Canadian government really need to get their priorities straight. They really don't have the right to write off ALL anime as pornography. I feel really bad for all the anime fans actually LIVING in Canada under that hypicritical government. After reading their views, I realized something. If I was a permanent resident anime fan living in Canada, I wouldn't be able able to own even half of the anime I have in my collection right now. All because of an uneducated opinion (anime wise) shared by VERY uptight members of govenrment. Anime is an artform that can and should be enjoyed by people of any age, race, sex, or creed. Ignorance is such a sad thing to witness.

What lazy government intern compiled that fact sheet? I thought only particularly slow high school school students used Wikipedia as a source.

At least in this instance, the problem is not bias or the government. It's simply ignorance because apparently people don't know how to do research anymore.

Wow, that's not a very well written article or fact sheet or whatever it is supposed to me. I'm not going to argue the anime is hentai argument (because more than enough people here will argue that one). I'm more concerned about Canadian schools. Who taught these people how to write? Quoting wikipedia is okay for a opinion article (like an OP/ED) if the quote is like addressing an opinion, but this is a factsheet. High schoolers know better (at least they SHOULD) than to quote wikipedia for fact. Whoever wrote this and the editor dropped the ball here (elsewhere too, but this is a big error regardless whether you know what anime is).

As for the other stuff, the author seems to correct him/herself after the first reference of anime is hentai ("This material, which in Western nations is referred to as animé"). Later the author writes "In Japan, animation is often refered to as animé, H-animé, or adult animé." and "Hentai can be produced in various formats including film (animé), comics (manga), and computer games (bishojo games)," thus seperating hentai and anime, even though this is not explicit and thus most people won't notice it. And it seems later that the author goes to comment that anime, manga, OVAs, etc can be used as mediums to show hentai, not that they are all hentai.

Anyways, regardless whether you think all anime/manga/etc is hentai (I don't), this is one poorly written and edited . . . whatever it is. This is of middle school writing quality, not something someone hired by the government quality (at least I thought so before).

(Also people, if you look at the hentai classification, be thankful that they have a pretty tame list [compared to some of the really bad stuff out there], because if they added some of the really messed up hentai in there and linked it to all anime . . .)

Hey so I've a question. Has anyone asked those people who say anime is hentai what Pokemon and Yu-gi-Oh and Digimon are? (I mean seriously, someone should ask them because that might make them think this out a bit)

Animal porn. In the case of Yu-gi-Oh, child porn.

I know, it boggles my mind.
