I know there is a concentration of Canadians that are of Asian decent. I'm sure they aren't very happy about this little oopsie.

I wonder if you're able to sue for libel over this.....

You should go to the "infamous" Pacfic Mall where half of the stores sell bootlegs haha (though police have been cracking down some stores as of late mostly for selling bootleg North American Movies).

Like i stated before the police is more interested in stopping the increase of gun violence then worry about bootlegs getting sold until then they doing as much as they can to stop bootlegging.

First I have I would like to state I think this article was poorly written, and using wikipedia as a source makes me wonder what were they thinking. That being said I do understand why this article was written. With the exception of a few adult themed cartoons, most western cartoons are intended for children and alot of parents think of cartoons this way. They see it as a form of children's entertainment instead of an artisitc meduim. Parents need to be made aware that this exists. I think the meaning as well intended, yet the way they presented it was inappropriate.

i think the parents know the diffrence. but it can vary often per parent. My parents know what anime is (im 16 by the way) as they know how it was like growing up. my dad told me about how he watch Voltes V in his collage years. but if the parent was strict i can understand how a parent can misunderstand this article and stop their child from countinuing watching anime or reading manga.

I do agree that some parents know, and I am not saying that parents are stupid. Most anime broadcast before the current anime explosion were directed towards children (Astro Boy, Kimba and Hello Kitty), so alot of parents think this is what anime is about, so many just do not understand whats out there, so this article needs to re-written instead of just removed.

I don't understand why everyone is flipping out over this. Despite a couple of poorly phrased statements (that probably should be corrected), the article as a whole doesn't give the impression that "all anime is hentai", and I doubt many people reading it would interpret that.

As for the existence of the article in general... well, you have to keep in mind that this isn't just a problem with hentai - the issue of pornography in general is a complete mess in Canada. Situations like this will persist until we actually get some clear, concise legislation in place.

Considering that the largest Anime localization company in the world (I'm assuming Viz is the largest) has their headquarters in Canada, they 'ought to get their facts straight.

Umm, Viz is in San Francisco.

They merely use a studio in Vancouver/Calgary to do some of their dubbing.

Viz also isn't any where near being the largest anime localisation company.

The Canadian government really need to get their priorities straight. They really don't have the right to write off ALL anime as pornography. I feel really bad for all the anime fans actually LIVING in Canada under that hypicritical government. After reading their views, I realized something. If I was a permanent resident anime fan living in Canada, I wouldn't be able able to own even half of the anime I have in my collection right now. All because of an uneducated opinion (anime wise) shared by VERY uptight members of govenrment. Anime is an artform that can and should be enjoyed by people of any age, race, sex, or creed. Ignorance is such a sad thing to witness.

Living in Canada isn't too bad. I actually have a really good anime and manga collection. I also sent an e-mail to the CCECCM about this. This is what I wrote:

"I am writing this as a concern for anime fans everywhere. You have failed to mention that anime and hentai are two totally different things in Japan. Anime is regular cartoons that contain no graphic sex scenes. Pokemon is an anime; there is no way that is classified as porn. There are also other animes that are not as childish as Pokemon but are in no way considered porn. It would be better if you could please get your facts straight before publishing something like this. Manga is not porn either. There are some manga that are but they are displayed elsewhere and are labeled as such. You should also have looked closer at your source of information (wikipedia) as they have correctly defined anime. They mentioned that hentai is a genre of anime, which is exactly what it is. It would be very much appreciated by me, and by fans everywhere, if you would correct your mistake."

Hope everyone is ok with what I wrote (if not too bad because I sent it)

Ultimately, the problem is that the system in place doesn't work. The system always seems so dated that everyone has found a way around it so the authorities try to put band-aid solutions that doesn't really work either.

There aren't many restrictions on anime and manga in Canada. This is one article about anime and manga in Canada. It doesn't reflect how all of the Government feels about it.

I guess Spirited Away and all of the other Miyazaki Films will be considered Porn too. But this is seriously screwed up.

Hey you know, Spirited Away won best animated film Academy Award 2001. The Academy Awards awarded the first animated porn show with a Academy!

Seriously though, I really would like to hear what the response is to fargazer's email. I am quite interested to hear their response, not to razz them, but to see how someone would react when someone rebukes an article that takes such a stand and someone basically saying they are (almost) completely wrong.

That isn't a problem unique to Canada. In fact, earlier this week we posted an article about the very same thing happenning in Colorado.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of stores throughout the United States openly selling anime bootlegs.

It's important to note that this article does not reflect an overzealous crackdown on media from Japan, but an overzealous crackdown on media depicting child pornography.

Still, a government agency quoting Wikipedia. Most gradeschools won't accept Wikipedia as a source but the Canadian government doesn't care about standards, it would seem. That right there isn't an accident or a slight mistake, it's retarded and ignorant.

I've got a question, and maybe this may help answer why wikipedia was used.

How many people when they first visited wikipedia knew it was a user-created encyclopedia? And those that didn't notice right away, how long did it take you to notice?

As for it being bad living in Canada, I think overall most people know anime is not all porno. Those that don't just need to be told of Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh. That is simple enough to tell them the reality. I personally find it more surprising that the 'factsheet' was so poorly written and depended on such a questionable source (wikipedia) for the bulk of its info (and then got a very . . . unique interpretation of anime).

And I can kind of understand why they wrote this article, considering that guy with the children hentai a bit back. To be frank, while nothing illegal happens in children hentai production, I can understand why there was a backlash to that. And to be frank, I don't blame them. I would like to know if there was someone into that stuff in my neighborhood and I would be wary of having children around that person. It's like if you like pets, you would be wary of someone who enjoys animated animal cruelty and torture. So it's no big surprise that another thing like this has come out of Canada.
