Except that that's not actually true. The whole "Whoo, child pornography is extremely prevalent in Canada!" thing is a moral panic with very little basis in reality - and as the testimony of numerous scientific witnesses at the recent Justice Committee hearings on Bill C-2 indicated, the idea of children looking at child pornography is a red herring. It's pedophiles who look at child pornography. "Children" with an interest in pornography look at pictures of adults; and pedophiles attempting to "groom" children, when they use pornography for that at all which is pretty seldom, use pictures of adults.

I'm sorry, but many of your are speaking with a great deal of ignorance yourselves. First of all, this is the first time I've even heard about this article. It's not making waves, people. Secoundly, the only thing hard for an anime fan in Canada is that since we're such a big country and so spread out population wise, it's hard to find the titles you want in smaller cities and towns.
I don't know why, but issues of gay marraige, Quebec, and Marijuana were brought up. I'm no expert on any of these subjects but I know enough to realize they should not be an issue in this discussion. There have always been issues with Quebec (and if you care to study into it you'll get a better understanding why), ever since Canada's creation. Marijuana, while bad, is not as bad as the issue with tobacco. Tabacco is highly addictive and very bad for the health, and yet it is not only legal but socially aceptable. Concerning Marijuana. Again I bring up the fact that Canada is a VERY large country with sparcely populated areas across most of the land. Our law enforcement works hard, but their not gods. Concerning gay marriage. I am not in favor of it. Perhaps I wouldn't be as upset with it if they called it a union and not a marriage. But to be honest, the whole gay marriage thing seems like smoke screen to me. The government has MUCH more pressing issues to deal with that they don't want to address, so they're digging up dirt to take the people's attention away from those areas. This is what it seems like to me. Again, I don't see what this has to do with the anime article, but since it was brought up and not properly addressed, I'd thought I'd do my best to better inform you.

I also want to add that I have seen more articles similar to this that were published in the USA then I have of ones in Canada. I really don't think it's a country thing. It's more of a general ignorance of people.

Looks like we had a effect. They took down the Hentai fact sheet and I can't find it on their site, so no worries. But one has to wonder why they even put it up if they were going to take it down so fast.

Well, the worst that can happen with this type of fact sheet is that it gets transferred into something that the police use as a guideline for dealing with suspects that they can't fully understand. Say the police bring in a guy for questioning in an unrelated crime, during the questioning he mentions anime, the police (being unfamiliar with anime) refer search their files for anime and turn up this child porn connection, and suddenly it becomes a child porn investigation too boot.
If you don't believe me, check around the internet for the guidelines for interrogating a D&D player, as distributed to police department by BADD.

Well, I can confirm PandaMan's observation that the fact sheet is removed. I've not gotten back a reply yet (and I'm not holding my breath), but I'll post anything I get back from them.

Good job with the emails, guys! The fact sheet has been taken down so that's a good sign.
Like I said before, this looked like the work of an intern or a temp worker and wouldn't have any bearing on anything major. Whether or not the Center feels that all anime is hentai or not is not the issue. If they do, then they'll have to find an actual legitimate source, not Wikipedia, to prove it and I imagine they'd have a hard time with that. It's nothing to get worked up about. Don't hate on Canada

You guys are aware that hentai doesn't specifically sit to just anime in Japan, nor is it actively used anymore in relation to descriptive adult anime.
Considering, as it stands for the most part, that hentai (or H- ) is used very rarely in Japanese shops with it basically lumped into the Ero categories. Everything from the ero-games to ero-anime.
Hentai has become nothing but an Westernized bastard word from the Japanese language, which isn't saying too much really
Oh well, chalk one up to misuse of resources and poorly researched materials.

Besides that, what happens when some Canadian kid says "I like anime" and their parents freak out because of the article. That's not fair to anime or the kid himself. |
I see that as far more likely to happen when the parent fails to understand anime's -- or the manga companies' self-imposed -- rating system. This is a very unfortunate article and I'm still kind of embarassed that there are "official" bodies in my country publishing this sort of stuff apparently without sufficient research and/or proofreading, but I haven't seen one mention of the article in the general media (newspapers, television, et cetera), so I suspect that most won't even be aware of its existence. Still, I hope it's corrected at some point and re-worded to a form that's harder to take out of context.

I got a reply to an e-mail that I sent to them a couple of days ago. Their reply to me was:
Quote: | The Fact Sheet has been removed temporarily from the NCECC website so we can review to ensure proper use of the terminology. Sorry for any inconvenience or confusion.

Maybe this time they won't quote Wikipedia.
