*sigh* Why not just call it Strawberry Marshmallow? It's been released in R1 under that official title for a couple of years now, and it's not like it's a radically different translated title. It's perfectly straightforward: ichigo = strawberry, mashimaro = marshmallow.

Sorry, but this kind of "gratuitous Japanese" is a random pet peeve of mine. I'm half-tempted to enforce the "This is an English-speaking forum" rule in situations like this in the future.

Probably because it shares the same director and animation studio.

My favorites are..

Azumanga Daioh - hilarious (I prefer the English dub though)
Welcome To The NHK - depressing and really funny at the same time, one of my favorites.
Ouran High School Host Club - Maybe a little more shojo than slice-of-life, but also funny and the parts that actually have to do with the plot are great, the last episode was amazing, definitely reccomend it.

A more recent "Slice of life" show is Lucky Star, it is kind of similar to Azumanga Daioh, but with a bit more "Otaku" stuff thrown in.

It is from the same studio that did The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya (I think that is a slice-of-life type show as well with some random stuff thrown in). So Lucky Star does share some of the same voice actors from that show (both the Japanese & English version).

BTW Great Teacher Onizuka also is really a very good dubbed show.
Mostly cause it features Steven Jay Blum (under an alias), Wendee Lee, Tony Oliver, and several others.

Also kind of similar in vein to Azumanga Daioh (but with even more randomness than Lucky Star) is Pani Poni Dash! it is about a 10 year old teacher named Rebecca "Becky" Miyamoto who runs a class of really off-the wall girls. It is perhaps one of the most random shows in the history of anime.

Another one that I got recently was The GokuSen, this 13 episode show is about a mob-heiress who wants to be a high-school teacher. She of course gets the worst class-thing, and literally kicks all their butts into gear (sort of like Onizuka does).

By the way, would School Rumble be considered "Slice of Life"? Cause it really is not about anything in particular, with the exception of loads of love triangles, and general goofiness all round.

I like calling it ICHIGO MASHIMARO because "ichigo" and "mashimaro" are both in the theme song, but I guess it could be confusing if people look for the DVDs under "I" when they should be looking for them under "S." I did something similar when the WHEN THEY CRY DVDs came out: I spent weeks looking for Vol.1 under "H" for HIGURASHI until I finally figured out, duh, I have to look under "W" for WHEN THEY CRY.

I really enjoy series like Nodame Cantabile, Honey & Clover, Nana and similar things less serious like Hidamari Sketch (+365) and Sketchbook ~ Full Colours and I know that at least part of the reason is that they are focused on a particular topic...Arts and Music.

Now I myself am no artist nor a musician but I am scientifically minded s I was wondering if anyone knew about any shows that are like the aforementioned but where they are students/working/etc in a scientific field as opposed to an arty field?

I've started Moyashimon but don't particularly like that; it's not serous and lacks the cute that makes Hidamari the best show in absolutely ages...

So you wanna know if there is a slice of life anime out there for you to watch? I can recommend two that really caught my attention. One of them is Paradise Kiss, another is one that stole my heart the most. That was Asatte No Houko. I highly recommend both, which gear to the more real side of anime.

I saw and enjoyed Asatte no Houkou but for the life of me I just could not watch Paradise Kiss...I blame my mother for being fashions' bitch...I utterly despise fashion and fashion culture. Clothes should be cheap and efficient (hot, cool, waterproof, etc).

I don't think I've seen series that's really focused on science, other than Moyashimon, but from the series you've mentioned you might like Bamboo Blade - it's very similar to Sketchbook except it's about a Kendo club. Hitohira, on the other hand, is about a drama club. And Beck is sort of like Nana too, so you might like that.

And this isn't really about science, but try Code-E. It's slice of life, but it has supernatural elements. The main character, Chinami, has a strange effect on anything electrical. There's another character in the series, Kotarou, is the chairman (and only member Anime smile + sweatdrop) of the science research club. You might consider Denno Coil is also a slice of life/supernatural mix anime. It takes place in the future, and the story is about kids who are really dependent on technology.

For me, Toradora! and Doujin Sketch are slice of life, since I generally enjoy that type of anime but don't ch'a think that in almost every anime, slice of life tends to be around 'high school'? I wonder why...Maybe it seems better, that way for the characters to gain possible relationships? o.O

I'll check Bamboo Blade out a bit then, I saw the 1st ep and thought it would be a ridiculous harem where the Tsundere are all armed so I stopped.

Toradora! I'm watching this season already and yes it is one of the best of its type, Doujin Sketch (that's the one about a girl who decides to draw porno doujin 'cause she sees money in it?) was really good (especially the bit on the train the 1st episode...)

Beck I'll check out, I've heard nothing but good things, Hitohira...I think I've seen that already, a super shy girl gets dragged into the drama club 'cause she has an amazing voice? That one was...ok, not great but fine.

I was following Code-E but just seemed to lose it at some point, I'll maybe pick it up again, Denno Coil I didn't like mainly because the art put me off (yes I'm that shallow I care what it looks like)

It seems that there are a lot of things out there just few meet my requirements.

I have a theory about why so many of these are set in High School:-

The target audience are in middle school and high school.

Also high school provides characters who can have a broad array of body types and personality types all in the same area who all have a reason to be together. Further the people are often looked after by their parents/guardians/etc (except for the 'tragic' or 'lucky' characters) meaning they have freedom to do stupid things and not worry about keeping themselves clothed, fed and sheltered.

Also working life sucks for most people. University gives much less freedom of body type (we all know there is a reason for the huge breasted or flat childlike characters) generally and much more limited scope for a wide variety of people to be together in a small area (lecture hall =/= class room) and most Uni students tend to avoid hanging out with people they dislike thus (potentially) less context for conflict.

I'd have to recommend Planetes, a space-based sci-fi with a light atmosphere and a favorable balance of comedy, drama, and romance, but still touches on human philosophy (such as the nature of human conflict and racism, the importance of social class, and the appreciation of the little things in life).

And yes, it revolves around working in a scientific field. The main characters are at the bottom of the caste, cleaning up space debris, junk, and garbage. How it is possible to make a spectacular anime out of that? Beats me.

hentai4me may be you would like shōjo such as Skip Beat it's similar to Nodame Cantabile, Honey & Clover, Nana but it is less serious.

It's about a girl, Kyoko, who wants to take revenge on her love and childhood friend Sho. In order to do that she joins the entertainment industry and becomes an actress. However, at first glance, she seems to be a doormat she proves to be much more than that.

Kyoko, who is the main character, is not the walking example of human puppy. Actually, she is vengeful and strong-willed woman. Kyoko is sixteen but there is almost no high school (this thread of story pops up but only for a short time and after a while it is only mentioned that she goes there). The plot is focused on her work as an actress and her relationship with Ren, who is the most important character after Kyoko and is also working as an actor. Ren is 20 years old, so obviously he no longer goes to high school.

Maybe my search fu skills are highly attuned then, I've either seen, seeing or heard of all of these suggestions.

I'll check skip beat as well, though I think I chose not to see it after the ANN Anime Guide, perhaps I should be less trusting of reviews (but then what is the point in reviews...)
