I understand the desire to think "here we go again" but this news is not like those other times, this isn't just Miyazaki chatter that's hitting the news. You have Ghibli's President going out there and saying that he's done directing theatrical films, you have an entire press conference planned just to discuss this.
It's Miyazaki, so yes, maybe he will change his mind later. But this is real and significant. And he's 72. The torch must be fully passed on soon.

Hey, ANN!
April Fools is still over half a year away!
But seriously, Miyazaki makes these statements so often that the Boy Who Cried Wolf is more credible...

It's almost like when Hideo Kojima says that each Metal Gear game will be his "last" one.

I hope Ghibli remains the studio we know without him.

I would have said that it's sad news but let's be honest here, I LOVE Miyazaki, but the guy didn't make anything relevant for over a decade (ever since Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle was good but wasn't great, and Ponyo... Ponyo was cute, nothing more).

Nah, I don't buy it either. I fully expect him to keep wandering Ghibli's halls, giving the animators advice and stealthily micro-managing his son Goro's next film.
Seriously, though, it will be a sad day for me next year when I put the Spirited Away and The Wind Rises BDs on my shelf and realize my Miyazaki film collection is complete. For good.

I think he deserve it, he did a lot for anime and I think he should get a big rest from doing anime films.

Filmmaker who cried wolf and all that, and 72 isn't all that old, Woody Allen still makes his yearly film and he'll be 78 in a few months.

I haven't seen all of his films (yet) but I truly love this guy's work, since I keep hearing about constant fake out announcements about him retiring, I'll just say this, I look forward to hearing about what he does next.
