My God, just save One Piece! They are too full of themselves anyways. Sure One Piece, YuGiOh, and Shaman King aim to Kids, but kids 11-15, not 7-10, and that's in Japan!

If they don't evolve I hope they get stamped out, sorry 4Kids lovers but they deserve it for being intirely too cheap on their productions (Not hiring a viraity of voice actors, releasing selected dvds, and sometimes cheap nonsensical edits).

Everything I've heard about this move indicates that 4Sight is only interested in the BIG adult markets. For instance, the merchandising deal with the American Kennel Club could cover a flood of books, magazines, commemorative items, pet foods, pet fashions, veterinary medicines etc., for the millions of adults who show dogs or just want to indulge the family pooch.

The number of adults who buy anime DVDs and other media/character merchandise is a belch in a hurricane compared to the number of adult pet owners who buy pet-related items.

The 4Sight division doesn't seem too interested in picking up what amounts to anime nickels and dimes when they can find big adult dollars all over the place. (^_*)

Does 4Kids own any live-action properties?

One, Ultraman Tiga, which utterly bombed and was released uncut in the end.

Everything else they own is animation or merch deals.

SOMETIMES? Wink

The entire "4" corporation should just be shut down, period. Why should we believe that 4Sight will be any better than 4Kids when they think pet products are "adult"? Kids have dogs too, you know. Once again, Al Kahn n' Co. show that they have no idea what they're doing. Next, they'll probably come up with "4Play" and release so-called softcore porn where the people keep their clothes on and only kiss. Razz

...but that anime lends itself more to a children's market.

That makes this announcement moot. They still dont get it.

In 4Kids' defense (I can't believe I said that), you have to remember that Japan has a different culture than America does. Their censorship regulations and ratings system is a lot less stricter than America's (hence why 4Kids censors the anime they dub), so while there are a lot of Japanese adults who read manga, most anime is considered for kids. Yes, there are anime series that Japan considers to not be for kids like Evangelion and Gantz, but those are actually in the minority and are mostly only watched by geeky otakus that literally have no lives with rare expections, such as popular series like Cowboy Bebop. Just because American anime fans might consider a series to be for "mature" audiences doesn't mean Japan will because we have different cultures. I'm not trying to side with 4Kids here or anything. I'm just trying to say I can sort of understand why 4Kids thinks anime is mostly for kids and remember they didn't say all anime was for kids; they just said it was MOSTLY for kids, which it really is when you consider our different cultures.

I don't mean to be so sinical but well I will beleive it when I see it. I just am very skeptical that they won't hack up these new more adult/teen titles as well. And well what more can we expect from a company called 4kids?

I understand what you mean; the differences between standards in America and Japan are noticeably different and 4Kids does have some justification for editing their properties for an American audience. However, this still doesn't explain their worst practices: changing music, nonsensical edits (like editing Luffy's mouth closed, removing all text (even English text), splicing episodes together to remove entire story arcs), adding in stupid jokes in the dialogue.

The "Naruto" airings have shown that the show can be edited for content (minorly, of course) and still stay true to the spirit of the original version. 4Kids' "One Piece" is mangled beyond recognition for no reason at all.

Does this mean that 4Kids may produce more original series than acquiring all of these anime cartoons?

Don't know. Toei isn't big fans of them, but I can't say the rest of the big anime producetion feels that way. I hope they don't. The last I need to see is more outcry when they pick up more anime titles.

I think One Piece has made it pretty clear that 4Kids utterly fails at everything. The whole thing was really poorly handled, like the premature launch with an extremely delayed merchandising and advertising campaign, network swaps involving a gradual decline on Saturday mornings, making too many promises without intention of keeping them or even with the knowledge of whether or not they CAN keep them. Aside from the #3 slot on Toonami, it doesn't have much going for it.

Yeah, I think they know.

Mm... they release the uncuts, they change the script back around... and what do they pick apart? Names. That's right kids. Names. Some names suck, some names were properly translated due to conflicting copywrites (Zoro to Zolo), some names were just changed because they needed it. I'll be incredibly honest with you all, I have a hard time remembering Japanese names, and even if I remember a name, it'll be hard to put a face to that name.

Lets take... mm... Ghost In The Shell, and Fullmetal Alchemist. I've watched GITS: Stand Alone Complex Season One, and GIG 2, yet I still can't remember ANYONE'S Name beyond Batou, Boma (can't even remember who the guy is, but I know I heard the name.) and the Major, Motoko Kusanagi. Yet, in a snap of my fingers, I could probably name off most every character in Fullmetal Alchemist (fully watched that series too, and I still believe Riza should have been Liza or Lisa, and Lyra should have been Lyla. Meh.).

Why do you think this is exactly? It's probably because I grew up mainly knowing english names. Roy Mustang, Edward Elric, Riza Hawkeye, Alex Louis Armstrong, Majahal, Shou Tucker, snap snap snap, I can remember these in a heart beat. Don't ask me to name my favorite character in GITS, though (Who is Togusa, by the way), because it takes me several minutes to snap through T sounding variations before I get it.

They change the names because they're easier to recognize and remember. It's a cultural thing. Of course, then you see that 4Kids also has a habit of completely removing original music and putting in their own. I've asked around a bit, and people I know prefer the music that's in the 4Kids version of YGO GX to the original. It's cultural preference, really. They prefer the Rock Guitar to whatever was originally there.

Yes, there are some really stupid changes (ever seen hot sauce come in a wine bottle? Me either.), but still, they do some good, and do some bad. I watched One Piece up past the Alabaster Kingdom and I can't remember any of the original music for the life of me.

Chief Aramaki, Major Kusanagi, Batou, Togusa, Boma, Saito, Azuma, Ishikawa, Pazu, Operator, and Tachikoma!!

And from 2nd Gig, Hideo Kuze, Prime Minister Yoko Kayabuki, Kazundo Gouda, and Proto.

That was easy.
