Gym Class Heroes is awesome! But yeah... how can anyone really believe that Kanye will be forgotten? He's bringing back into the mainstream the forgotten meaning of hip-hop. People use hip-hop too interchangeably with rap. Rap is made of getting shot nine times, growin up in the hood, and pushin a Benz. Hip-hop does include rapped lyrics, but the lifestyle it invokes doesn't take root from any hood you're from or what car you drive. It's all about really good and soul-pleasing beats with song lyrics that don't always include cars, girls, money and drugs. That's why Kanye will not be forgotten. This manga will be AWESOME! I'm sure of it.

An OEL Manga created by Kanye West and Bill Plympton? I'm already uninterested. Nice to know he acknowledges Anime and Manga, though, maybe this'll put an end to those arguements about weather or not that Lupin lyric was really an ohmage or just a shout out to some pimp.

Actually, I remember reading an interview with Plympton in which he said he didn't care much for anime (he didn't talk about manga). He said he admires Miyazaki, which seems to be a mandatory statement for every animator being interviewed nowdays, but didn't like the rest of the anime titles he sampled, saying that there wasn't enough humor in them for his taste (meaning that he obviously hasn't seen enough...).

Yes, it cannot be manga, but it could be interesting. What's it based on? His lyrics? Or is the scene of his rant going to be in there too?

I think he said "Lupe Steal like Lupin the 3rd". As for Kanye's longevity in the rap game, that is uncertain but if you aren't deep in the Hip Hop culture then I don't think you're qualified enough to make that kind of judgment. I don't expect anybody to reach the level of success as 2pac (except maybe Eminem), but if you wanna talk about numbers then Kanye already surpassed N.W.A. in sales. Sure Cube Dre, Ren, yella boy eazy were all landmark acts that left a dent in Hip Hop History but you gotta consider the time they came out, Rap was still in it's early stages and looked down on as a fad. The whole West Coast sound revolutionized hip hop in the late 80's and early 90's because it was so fresh and innovative, I doubt any artist can make that big of an impact today because Hip Hop is so mainstream and versatile now.

I can't hate on Kanye because he brings positivity to the game and brings something different to the table opposed to the whole gangsta, booty shaking, I got shot 10 times and commercial garbage that's dominating the industry. We need acts like the Kanyeezy's, the Common's, the Black Eyed Peas, The Roots, the Dilated Peoples, the Jurassic 5's, The Alchemist, Jin, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, the Fugees and other socially conscience rappers out there to help balance out the spectrum. It's like for a while people thought anime was nuttin more then ultra violent sick porn cartoons that would only appeal to metal heads, but once North America started importing different styles and genres the anime industry is much bigger and more balanced today then a few years ago. And I think Kanye is great for Hip Hop because he offering an alternative opposed to the whole violent misogynistic style that Rap is often stereotyped for.

Personally, I believe Kanye will have continued success because in the rap industry Kanye is known more for his production skills rather then his rapping ability. He's not much of an Emcee matter of fact he get other rappers like Rhymefest to ghost write for him. But before he ever laid down vocals he was a producer first. unlike other rappers he doesn’t need to rely on his record label to supply him with beats and production he can do it himself and I believe Kanye's production skills rival that of Dr. Dre, Neptunes and Timberland just look at his rap sheet. He's one of the most sought after producer in the game so I aint worried about him falling off. Look at Dr. Dre, he releases an album every what 8 year average? But he's still a prominent figure in the Hip Hop community til this day

I dunno what the perception is about black people, maybe people think blackness symbolizes a bit of "cool" or something and anime being a bit "geeky" and I guess some fans just can't phantom the idea that a black man could be into anime when they should be out robbing mothafuccaz actin cool or sumptin but dats jus da way i see it. from my observation growing up ( I'm Cambodian from the Eastside of Long Beach CA BTW) the Black community always had a fascination with asian cinema such as kung fu flicks and anime. hell even Ice-T, Busta Rhymes, Wu-Tang Meth Ghostface Rza, Pharrell, Samuel L. Jackson they all anime fans. I remember reading a study a while back that research finds that Black kids spend more time watching TV and playing videogames then the white kids so what ya'll think?

As for the terms anime and manga, the reason why we associate those terms with the Japanese culture is because they Japanese words. So even if manga means "all comics in general” we don't go around calling Superman manga unless we were in Japan. When Kanye says he's working on a "Manga Style" book to me it's more like he saying he working on a Japanese style comicbook yadadamean? It wasn't that hard to underdig was it?

Bill Plympton doing manga? how the hell could this possibly look?

So is Tokyopop just against calling something a "comic book"? Because I can't imagine this even managing to try to look like manga. That said, reading this news made me die a little inside. I imagine Kanye West will do for manga what 50 Cent did for video games. Which is sell millions of copies to people with absolutely no taste.

I saw penguintruth's post as more realistic than hating. Kanye's moderately popular at the moment, yes, but he's a far cry from a Tupac Shakur or an NWA.

or Run DMC or Public Enemy. Gotta love Chuck D.

I think this is an alternative route for hip hop artists. If you noticed the trend you will find that most contemporary hip hop "artists" have made fashion lines, movies, and all sorts of merchandise for people to buy.

In a way, I kinda find West's choice of making a manga more..admirable compared to what the other hip hop "artists" chose to do as as side business. He isn't using looks or stuff like that to sell his products, he is using imagery and ideas continued in the form of words.

There's a difference between relevance and importance.

Kanye West is relevant to music. Now.

Kanye West will never be important. His relevance will fade. In 5-10 years, nobody will even remember his name.

And I'd rather anime and manga remain a Japanese art form.

Let the ridiculous elitism begin.

Waiting for heavy amounts of people bashing not only KanYe West but also hiphop in general and everything else that's popular.

Yes I agree, that was written in a very snippity tone. And I don't want to bash hip-hop, as i like most of it. I like most of Kanye West's music. However I think the writter has a point. Only I would say he is important now instead of relevant. Relevant is something you would say about someone who is not on or near the top of something. West is clearly on or near the top of the hip-hop industry. Therefore he is important. Where I agree is the five to ten years part. I would say that to be remembered well past this time you would have to be revolutionary to hip-hop. I am not saying he won't be, I am just saying he hasn't yet. And again, I think he is talented.

As for the manga-style, the market will decide. If it is good people will buy it. If not it will fall the way of Palladium. Just because you (the ones who want to restrict to only japan) don't think he should break in to a market and write a japanese style book, remember in USA you can do anything you want, the market decides if you survive. Don't like it don't buy it. If the glove don't fit, you must acquit. Or whatever cute metaphor you can interchange.

I predict it won't become much, but we will see.

oh yea almost forgot, Pac rulez.

great blanket statement there. I love Hip Hop, but think West is a bit of an embarassment (his music doesn't sway me one way or the other, but his public antics leave me wanting). Does that make me an elitist, or just someone with an opinion based on past history?

We still allow those here, even if we don't agree with them, right?

author's note: the author of this post considers his, and most people's opinions on a topic to be the mental equivalent of armpits. Most everyone has two, and they all stink Smile

okies, this is what I get for posting while sleep deprived. I can't even remember what the topic was anymore Laughing

One of the first intelligent comments I've read in here today. It's obvious that many people come around not knowing what their talking about. Kanye has never once tried to be "hood" or "gangsta". When someone thinks of Hip-Hop they immediately think of thugs but that's really not the case here.

Why don't you listen to some of his lyrics and see how deep they really are. Roses for example.

His Hurricane Katrina Rant pretty much derides anything he does. Period.

I am an anime fan (never would've guessed that, eh?), and I actually think there's some validity to Plympton's statement. With the exceptions of Azumanga Daioh, and the very recent Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu and Ouran Koukou Host Club, I've never seen an anime that really floored me. I've seen Excel Saga, and enjoyed it quite a bit, but all of the comedy came from its gags, most of which was pretty lowbrow. I honestly have no clue who Plympton is, but he may like his comedy more highbrow, like I do. Arrested Development, The Office, The Daily Show...

Most anime, even some of the most serious, inject some level of comedic relief, but it's all the same after you've watched enough. Guys falling into girls boobs, mistaken identities, ditsy main characters, the list goes on. Shows that really inject something fresh and funny, especially to American minds, are quite rare.

I for one really is looking forward to this manga. If its based on his lyric I would think it will be good reading. I love Kanye West I find his music very profound and sometimes comical and well written (what I like to read in mangas). I seen his drawings on a MTV interview so the art won't be a concern for me. Whenever it comes out I hope it does well. Well who know it could get more people in to the world of anime and manga.

All of his songs are good. I admire his confidence in himself but sometimes he can go a little far. I admire him because he doesn't always talk about the now usual bling, girls, cars etc. (Though he goes there sometimes) His song and what he says is about how he feels which was the beginning purpose of hip- hop.
