I'm really rather fascinated by the infamy this show is garnering. It's an anime about six vampires who act like vampires holding a teenage girl as a captive blood bank. And thus far it seems to be playing itself for horror, with the protagonist being visibly horrified at just about every turn. Whether or not it can eventually blend romance successfully into this story depends on how the story frames itself going forward. But really, most of the hate this show is getting seems to be because the monsters are acting like actual monsters. The protagonist is unsafe and that makes a lot of people uncomfortable, especially after it crossed the 'bite' line. In stories like this, vampirism is often neutered; they seem dangerous, but they're sparkling vegetarians who vow to never hurt you despite saying over and over again how much they'd love to kill and eat you. So to me, this show is a pretty refreshing take so far; I'll stick it out.

Just because something is aimed at girls doesn't mean it can't be sexist against them.

And yeah, I was expecting this because it's a Showgate title on Crunchyroll. Well, it'll have its audience. Which I am most definitely not a part of.

Let me guess, it's also getting an an English dub and Blu-ray release too right? While Tari Tari and Hidamari Sketch remain on sub only DVD right? Yeah, screw you too Sentai.

I know their dubs suck but if a show gets a dub it's much more likely to be released here in Australia. I completely forgot that Arcana Famiglia even existed but thanks to the fact it's getting an English dub and a Blu-ray by Sentai it will be released over here by Hanabee and Blu-ray and DVD within days of its US release. And now the same thing will probably happen with this godawful torture porn

That would likely be decided after they see the streaming audience and demographic ~ if the demo tilts female, that would normally mean better sales, which would obviously increase the odds of a dub.

I hope my comments haven't offended anyone. At the moment, I think it has genuine merit as a vampire story. And I do think it's worth discussing.

Wow, wow, wow. 'Torture porn' is a genre of horror wherein a film will attempt to scare the audience by immersing them in long depictions of grievous injury done to a party or parties (like dismemberment, torture, etc.) by the antagonist(s). This series is hardly comparable. As far as I can tell, Yui hasn't suffered anything worse than a few bites and a fair amount of psychological anguish.

Why? I know the logic behind it is something like "Well we get reverse harem shows to satisfy girl fans" or some other BS but seriously, why this show? There were other (good, most definitely made with the female fan in mind *cough cough* Free! *cough wheeze* Makai Ouji! Sorry, titles stuck in my throat) shows ignored this summer season that need licensing so why this one right out the fall season starting gate?

This is exactly what I thought, too.

No sale on this one, even though I like to support stuff that is made for female viewers. This show is just stupid. Sort of a teeny-bopper's idea of what S/M is. Not hot at all. Evil or Very Mad

What do you see as being 'S/M' about this premise, exactly?

I'd thought of checking out the first episode and see if it was bad enough to laugh about or just downright wrong, but now I'm definitely conviced against it. I don't want to hear Rei's voice being an asshole ):

According to the review of the game, the "options" you can take as B*tch-chan are divided between S -basically allow yourself to be abused and bullied by all the guys- and M -not being a doormat-. So basically the game itself has the S/M theme at the core of its premise

It's been shared a lot whenever any news about this series comes up, Fencedude linked to it in the previous page.

And yeah, I mixed up S and M, sorry. The M choices apparently are mostly "ohmygod the hot guy is bullying me and forcing himself on me SO ROMANTIC" and the S is, in the words of the reviewer "doing what normal girls would do -not act like a doormat-" from what I understand most "S" choices also lead to "bad ends", which in this game's world seems to be "Not being abused by 'wifebeater no. 3' for the rest of my life"

EDIT: Well damn, I could swear there was a post between these two. Confused

Okay, so I skimmed a review (so as not to avoid spoilers) and I'm not particularly sure what to make of this; I need time to think it over. I at least know I'll be judging the anime apart from the game, and the merits it has as a vampire story are still merits.

Yep. That's about it. It's not the first time that I've seen this screwed-up relationship trope in shojo. I like to avoid those since they drive me crazy. For some reason in shojoland Japan "M' is confused with Stockholm Syndrome. There seems to be one route like that in every otome game. bleh. In this particular case, it is "choose the guy you would like to have Stockholm Syndrome with. Then you get to find out what made the guy so messed up, and then there is the "redeeming" and all that adolescent, fantasy garbage that has nothing to do with "S" or "M", or anything truly sexy or sensual.

Definitely doesn't work for me. No matter if the guys have beautiful character designs. They all have crappy, one-note personalities, so they end up looking like just a bunch of weedy little weasels, IMO. Not sexy. No fun. Mad

So, it seems like the anime will be framed for fetishism rather than horror, but I'll definitely finish it (any story finished can serve as frame of reference for critiquing the next story in the genre), and try to judge it on its own merits rather than the game's. That said, reading about the game definitely punched a hole in any kind of hope I had for this as a vampire story. But the subtext can still make for interesting discussion, the same way it can when Moe is the subject, or any other fanservice really.
