I don't understand how buying a console means you'll be fine for 5-6 years, but if you buy a really good PC it's out of date in 5-6 months.
Consoles are out of date the moment they are finalized.
But whatever, if you a buy a good PC it will last you just as long as a console if not more. You don't have to keep updating. Plus PC games are cheaper and have incredible sales.

And have some backwards/forwards compatibility and emulators.

Even FF14 on low PC settings looks better then the terrible PS3 version.
It's time. |
I'm definitely ready for new consoles. The leaps in progress aren't there anymore, and it's pretty clear that the hardware is showing its age. Whenever I mention to a friend of mine that I'm ready for the PS4, he always says that he wants the current generation to last another couple of years. However, he got his PS3 about a year ago, while I've had mine since day one, so things still look impressive to him while I can see that progress is made in only minor increments now.

This is the longest generation of the modern 3D gaming era. The 360 launched in 2005, and the PS3 in 2006. Just because you personally might not be wanting to upgrade, doesn't mean it's not the time. |
And those generations are only going to get longer. So, instead of whining about it, it's best for devs to get used to an efficiency model instead of using the sloppy, amateur brute force methods they'd been utilizing for the past few years.
