I prefer completely unedited anime and manga myself, but unlike many, I'm one of the few who understands the edit from their point of view. I'm not offended by the original symbolism, but it's a smart move considering Christianity is the most populated religiion in the US, last I knew, and given the popularity of the manga, it's best not to ruffle feathers.

I think boycotting over one small edit that doesn't alter the storyline at all is going too far, and stealing their work by reading scanlations and not buying current and future volumes over this edit is flat out disgusting.

And really, if Viz says their edits got appoval from the creator, who are you to complain?

HAHAHA you people are sad really. Complaining over changing a Cross, to a plain wall.... what's so bad about that? "Yeah but they are going to start editing more stuff and BLAH BLAH BLAH". Just a simple edit to a more mainstream manga, if manga is even mainstream, they did it with Naruto so I just don't see what the big deal is. I agree that it's just to prevent people, parents for example, to be upset by stuff like this.

What does piss me off is typos. I know there is one in the first volume. It just make me feels that the company doesn't care about the manga and don't even bother revising for errors.

As long as they don't change Al into a little Mega-Man doll, I can live with a stupid piece of stone.

I'm not trying to be a "troll", but I just find that type of outcry utterly stupid.

I never said I'd steal the manga, but I did say I'd boycott it. I still do not condone stealing anything for any reason, especially not anime or manga.

Regardless, many creators simply let the American companies do whatever they think will make the most money. The oftentimes don't even bother to see what was changed and they just trust the American companies to know the market better, but that was obviously a bad choice in this case.

i doubt anybody whose read up through Volume 7 would suddenly stop reading a series they enjoy because of one page being altered. Especially when the alteration totally has NO effect on the story whatsoever.

There are legal ways to read manga without paying for it. If you're dead set on boycotting Viz but still want to read their series legally, just borrow their manga from the library. It shouldn't be too hard to find a popular series like Fullmetal Alchemist at your local library. Heck, even my puny school library has multiple copies of every volume of FMA. The librarians at my local public library are manga lovers, and they allow people to print out pages from scanlations and tape them over edited scenes (except for extreme cases where that wouldn't work like Tenjou Tenge). I've been borrowing Viz's manga from the library for about two years since they've proven that they can't be trusted to not edit just about every series they have.

And what about the people who have yet to start collecting the manga, like myself?

Wow, watching weeaboo whine and complain over edits never gets old.

I support editting out the cross, it makes Catholics like me happy and animu fans angry complaining. Cosmic balance.

Sorry to make it sound like I was targeting you. But I'm sure many have thought about boycotting and not buying it and heading over to scanlations. And to me, reading scalations but not buying the official release is stealing, much like anime bootleg DVDs and fansubs without purchasing the legit stuff.

And I simply don't get your second paragraph, like where you base the statements on. For example I'm sure they saw what they changed, lol. Razz

I find this completely stupid. If it was good enough for TOKYOPOP to do in Rebirth #11, it's good enough for Viz.

Jeez, you must go to a nice school and live in an awesome area!

Hardly anyone around me has even heard of Fullmetal Alchemist, much less the manga...

gonna agree with the person above about the typos...
don't they have spellcheck?

but i also agree with the wanting unedited manga.

usa companies definitely underestimate the intelligence of their targeted age-group. don't they realized that students at that age are required to read more controversial books in school? ...and that people who would be offended by the story would have quit loooong before vol 8, so all they are alienating are the fans who would love to get the original manga as is.

and creator's permission? haha, he's probably snickering at the conservative americans.

I've read recently about that, and I just repeated what I said. I agree -- you would think most creators would care what others are doing to their work in other territories, but sadly, most of them really don't.

We're the fans. You know, the people that actually spend their hard earned money on this stuff. And you don't really know how Viz gets approval from the creators, they could tell them either okay us editing that page or we just take that page out. I'm sure most creators would rather have a minor edit like the shape of the stone instead of a major one like a missing page. If Viz told them that if they didn't okay the edit they would print the page exactly as it was originally printed I would hope that most creators would tell them not to edit it. Really this stuff is just ridiculous. These companies need to grow a pair and stop listening to every idiot that complains that they were offended by something. You're offended? Guess what, too bad. Get some thicker skin.

You make a good point, but I think what made a difference is the fact it's Viz and FMA, both sell more and are more popular. Correct me if I'm wrong; I don't keep up with manga sales, but that's the last I knew. Razz I think FMA even sells more than Naruto...?

Um, so what? Its a small edit. It doesnt ruin the manga at all. The symbolism is still there as Greed is still in cross form, just the shape of what he is hung on has changed so VIZ doesnt get bitched at by religious nuts (the MOST ANNOYING PEOPLE EVER!)

And im christian by the way, and i approve of this edit.
