My reaction is mixed. I'd love to see this happen, but at the same time the last thing I want is for anime programming to dissapear from mainstream stations like YTV in favour of a specialty station that only people who are already anime fans will watch.

I think that, in order for an anime specialty station like this to flourish, it will need to be complemented by anime programming on other stations like YTV.

Plus, the anime network is targeted at adults. There are still anime programs that would fit better on YTV anyway. As for other mainstream stations, I doubt they would suddenly decide to remove all anime programming. If they have reason to show it, they will (e.g. popularity, appeal to their target audience).

The anime network will have the option of showing more niche titles. I hope that this station will have a positive effect on the anime industry in Canada as a whole; encouraging sales, distribution, etc.

But I'm still a bit surprised by the news.

If done right, this has the potential to affect the entire North American industry. Should this station actually get off the ground, it will likely be the most widely available all-anime service in North American history as a Category-2 station. I don't think anything of this magnitude has ever been put forward before.

Personally, I'd love to see Corus acquiring titles straight from Japan to air.

Ok. When I heard this, I was just like :jawdrop: "DUDE!!! This is AWESOME!!!!!!!" Also, Someone said that Teletoon wasn't showing any anime. Well, that's not true. Their showing Spider Riders. It's on the encyclopedia so I guess it has to be anime. Plus it's a Canada-Japan project. But the idea of a whole channel that us Canadians can watch anime is just... "AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yeah, but a lot of the shows that are deemed for "teens" in Japan aren't necessarially considered the same thing in North America. I figure that YTV has a fair bit of lee-way to work with here. After all, there isn't that that much anime geared to truly an adult (college age and older) audiance in Japan without delving into the hentai genre. (Then again, they show some softcore porn on citytv late at nights sometimes, so it could happen.)

But yeah, like others have said, this could be good. I hope they run some subbed shows, even only if they are run late at night.

This could be a good thing IF
a) the station isn't just anime on demand (Pay Per View)
b) YTV keeps it's Friday anime block (with new material) for those who don't get the channel or can't afford it
c) the channel provides sufficent new material rather than just being filled with repeats of already aired shows
d) the channel doesn't become another MTV, that is it doesn't just become filled with talk shows about anime (to fill it's CanCon) but actually shows substancial amounts of it
e) the channel is packaged in a way so that at least some homes will get it as part of an existing package, otherwise it may be difficult to get enough subscribers
f) the channel is available to all services, not just digital cable but both satellite systems as well (as a category 2 it won't be on basic cable)
g) YTV's Friday night anime block actually airs full seasons, not just the first season (or part of it), requiring that those interested in the show subscribe to the new channel to catch the rest
h) the station runs more than just what has been shown in the US (though there are still shows that the US has seen that Canada hasn't)

Of course if such a station goes through it could mean the continuation of shows such Case Closed and Ghost in the Shell, both of which don't exactly fit YTV's profile.

I saw the ad for the application yesterday. It was quite long and explained explained the things flip wrote. It also had something about filling something out on the CRTC's website, and whatnot, to help the station get off the ground. I don't know all the specific's, but I do know those that all the information you submit will be viewed publicly. You probably have to 18, so that leaves me out, but I hope others will help them out.

While GitS wasn't the most smartest move for YTV, I don't see how Detective Conan doesn't fit YTV's profile. =\

While I'm excited at the possibility of such a channel, it makes me wonder if such a channel can actually get off the ground, since there'd have to be a decent amount of CanCon on the station (at least I assume this. =\). Also, I'd hope that if this channel becomes possible, that they don't acquire too many series, since if the programs are targeted towards teens/adults, then there might be certain nights where ratings might be lower, due to schoolwork, jobs, etc. What I'm trying to say, is that if this station becomes possible, that YTV would pick a good amount of titles to air, not only because of the reason above, but so they will have more to choose from in the years to come.

You can submit a comment to the CRTC regarding this license here. You do NOT need to be 18 to do this, and I highly recommend that everyone consider getting their opinions through. Deadline for submissions is October 14.

Agreed on all counts, although I'm not sure if YTV is malicious enough to pull the rug out from under anyone's feet by moving a show half-way through. And honestly, I still think that Case Closed can find a home on YTV. They just need to give it a good schedule.

I guess, I should elaborate on my previous statement.

I feel that Japanese anime is a medium for all ages. Editing isn't ALWAYS a bad thing, you know. As long as no critical elements are compromised, and as long as the same meaning is conveyed (e.g., "I'll destroy you" conveying the same meaning as "I'll kill you"), then the show's integrity won't be at risk. I don't need to remind or tell anybody about the general opinion on 4Kids, but again, editing isn't ALWAYS a bad thing (it is in 4Kids' case [they do more than just edit], but not always in others).

In any event, basically YTV is expressing their opinion that "anime" is meant for "adult" viewing, even if they don't mean for it to sound like that. I personally feel that this isn't fair to anybody. Look, I feel that if there is to be a 24-hour anime channel, then it should be marketed to viewers of all ages. Heck, they could save the "uncut" stuff for the wee hours of the morning, and if even with editing, a "TV-PG" (or whatever they say in Canada) can't be avoided (like with Naruto on the U.S. Cartoon Network), they could save that for the prime-time hours of 7-11 PM, then everyone would be happy.

As for subbed anime, depending on the show, I don't think this would be appropriate for a channel such as this.

Then again, I live in the U.S., so what do I know... Sad

...what? Would you mind elaborating a bit.

I do, however, find it funny that Youth Television is creating a network for anime aimed at adults

For more information about The Animé Channel proposition, go to:

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Hearings/2006/n2006-10.htm#14

It's not much, but it does state quite clearly what YTV wants to put on the channel
