So, how did "Battle Angel Alita" (pick your incarnation) manage to miss camping out in level 5?

Oh, don't be fooled folks. These are not Jason's choices for the worst manga of all time. No, this article comes from a place of reverence. Five years ago may be a long time for some, but for me it seems like only yesterday Jason came by to reinforce that the only reason Violence Hero Riki-Oh is not considered the greatest achievement in manga is because Tetsuya Saruwatari's output at this high level is so prolific that it's tough to pick favorites:

Man. We talked about Uzumaki, Crying Freeman, AND Violence Hero Riki-Oh. No wonder Jason Thompson is so cool.

Hm... come to think of it was "Jigoku manga" a real term or something you guys made up?

Wow! Combining manga and "The Divine Comedy." That's pretty creative. I wonder how Mr. Thompson's going to finish this up. It's going to be interesting.

Cipher is the best slice of life manga ever written.

Oh, I love Scott Pilgrim, it is one of my favorite comics ever, but yes indeed, due to the unfairness of the universe it would totally be in Level 1 of Hell. I just didn't want to list OEL manga I liked in that section because it would have been (even more) confusing. ^^

Well that was a fun read! Sincerely looking forward to part II. If I had to guess, two of the three remaining circles of "manga hell" would be reserved for A.manga that fetishize rape culture be they BL or not (I guess this would count as Wrath?) and B.manga that pretend to be something they are not, like when a manga tries to be psuedo-intellectual. Either way I'm sure Part II will have me laughing.

Funny read as alway. But Gunslinger Girls is not a lolicon manga. Iit is also for some reason a shonen manga devil knows why. The series is "only" based on a lolicon hentai doujinshi. So yes hell is the right destination but the actual mangas is very good. Especially the ending(which again is a but lolicon but not how you think). 8,5/10
I also agree that Bleach can go to hell but isn´t it there already.

The column is not here to say if a manga was good or not in the traditional sense but if it is guilty of "manga sins" and yes, GSG is well-known for skirting the lolicon line, so it counts.

I was truly impressed to see the Boss of the 3rd Circle was Tori Koro. I did not know there was another soul upon the planet that had born witness to such a lazy, sloppy effort at "cute girls doing cute things". I love those cutesy-wootsy slice-of-life manga but that one is just terrible.

I decided to look up the Inferno and saw the eighth circle is "fraud". I would love to see that used for manga which set up fantastic stories and potentially incredible payoffs but instead were cancelled and/or ended everything in a horribly unsatisfying manner in the course of 2-3 chapters. The manga that said everything would be great, gave you reason to believe it, and in the end wasn't. Kamichama Karin, Cage of Eden, and especially Negima spring immediately to mind Twisted Evil

Just when you thought ANN couldn't get any more preachy, we got an sermon about fire and brimstone. Thanks priest, now I know what manga Jesus wouldn't read.

And, having been born deep in the heart of Jesus-land, I will now hurray to [re]read them -- in particular, "Strawberry Marshmallow". It's adorable, and contains no sex or any approach to anything like sex whatsoever.

....

Good vituperative writing though, Jason!

Sorry, but this article just did not work for me, though I must admit that I did not actually read all of it.
I started reading because it was interesting and creative, but I soon started to get annoyed at the typical "why what I like is better than what you like" attitude. Part way through the fourth level I decided that I should quit before I got really pissed-off and said something that I would regret.
I did quickly skim over the rest of it but that was all.

It really seemed to me that he was trying much too hard to find things about the different series that he could use to put them in a particular level.

I present a further manga bound for hell:
http://www.amazon.com/Manga-Claus-Nathaniel-Marunas/dp/1595141340
and all the horrible german manga loyalties that the library i work in has. Like the garbage by Robert Labs. And last and certainly least the magazines by Akita Shoten. He did tough mention some of their "fine" products. Here are some fraud suggestions:

All the borderline H seinen manga. All promise no porn/plot. Maybe amazing sequels like Dragonball GT and all the gecko endings the anime(and sometime manga) industry gave us. And moe version of manga i actually like e.g. Evangelion, Soul Eater and Titan Spin offs. I also would count them as greed.

Yeah this was kind of my feeling too. I know he was trying to be funny, but this just feels so...off.

Jason's usually pretty thoughtful and good-natured, and this kind of reads almost like a Cracked.com article with a lot less profanity.

I already wrote the 2nd half so you'll see it in a week.... If you prefer my usual type of reviews, don't worry, the column won't be trapped in Manga Hell forever.

(......or WILL IT??!!) -_-

I found this highly amusing.

Though I must admit, I do have an ever-growing collection of Alice in the Country Of manga...

I feel Jason's a bit too mean-spirited here by condemning whole genres/categories of manga instead of worst examples of said genre/category. K-on, for example is pretty decent and maybe deserve a place in purgatory, while something like Tori Koro definitely deserves to be a boss in hell.

Anyway, here are my thoughts on some other candidates "Manga Hell" (maybe some of them are in the next part?)

- Total wish-fullfillment manga about some loser guy gets the hottest girl in the neighbourhood. The shounen ones aren't that bad, but the real cinchers are in the seinen manga. I mean something like Miman Renai where a 29-old programmer for erogame meets an angelic 12-years old middle schooler who totally understands him and promised to date him when she's graduated from highschool? Yeesh.

-Canceled shounen manga. No need to explain this, Jump produces this on a monthly schedule.

-Pseudo-ero manga where there is no frontal sex, but contains a lot of cocktease and innuendo l, like Oretama or Yuria 100 Shiki, and where they take a certain strange fetish to the utmost extreme like Alice no Hyakudo Cc and urination.

-Almost-plagiarist manga where they take one too many inspiration from another popular manga. The worst is when it magnifies the worst aspect and doesn't capture the best aspect from the 'original', like Lost Brain (with Death Note as the 'original').

- By far the worst manga I've had the 'opportunity' to read that is not outright porn manga is Corpse Party:Musume. It's a double whammy of adaptation of another work and gorn manga. I'll just say that it contains the following materials despite not being outright porn manga: 'moe' character design, clingy little sister, childhood friend with big boobs, crossdresser, urination, graphic violence, tentacle rape, gang rape, psychotic little girl.
