Did it sell more than Clannad or most high-profile shows that come from Kyoto? No. Sales dropped off pretty hard after that first volume that indicates most support was just token.

It the best selling kyoani show that is actually owned by Kyoani themselves.

It sales did not drop off after v1, and it sold more than clannad.

29k is not very good. Also you should learn some basic economics. They only have so many employees and there is a limited amount of distribution on TV... so yes, by making this show they are NOT making something else that would sell much, much better.

Clannad sold less than 29k, and 29k is very high. Its obvious you don't know anything about anime sales.

Just look at the average mean of Summer 2013

Nobody is watching it out of an anti-moe agenda, whatever that means. And Free S1 sold a ton, so i'm not sure what you mean with that either.

To be fair, I've seen a few people who like Free yet bash male oriented fanservice anime. I think one of more amusing videos I saw was by a girl named JesuOtaku. She spent around 10 minutes talking about how a fanservice anime aimed at men was bad because it had boobs and was campy/shallow, and then immediately went on a 10 minute gush on how Free was amazing. There was a bit lack of self awareness on that part.

Those also exist on our(male) side, so its to be expected.

I'm sure there are some people that like Free legitimately, but a huge portion of the fan base is people watching it out of some anti-moe agenda. They're not going to support the show financially and if other studios follow suit and abandon moe (which fans actually support) for this type of stuff (which they don't) we're going to have a problem... Pretty basic to understand.

This is based on literally zero evidence and is proven wrong by a ton of actual evidence to the contrary. At best it's delusional, at worst it's horribly sexist and we don't appreciate blatant sexism here. Knock it off.

Rederoin, did you just source yourself? Haha, cute. Linking to a forum you run where you admit the figures are "estimates" maybe isn't the best way to verify your statements. Clannad has sold over 100k at this point. Free S1 hasn't even been licensed outside of Japan...

Who on earth would waste their time watching a show they don't like because they hate the opposite kind of show? I have never in all my years heard of one person doing this. It's a ridiculous premise, and as such needs to be backed up with hardcore facts if you're going to make it.

For me, I love the summer anime seasons because they always seem to feature shows that are intended to be fun. The first two I've seen, Free! and Samurai Jam are just that.

Sexist?? How?? Loads of females enjoy moe shows. Most of the anti-moe crowd are dudes unless you're saying I'm being sexist to men? I'm not following at all how anything I said was sexist.

You should check out the source I used at the top, I was not pointing towards the estimates but the sales part of the post. Maybe then you will realize how high 29k is.

Dude, there's only like two series that have ever passed the 100k average sales, and one of them is Evangelion. Give me a break, you have clearly no idea of what you're talking about

I was under the impression that there was another one, but I'll admit to have no particular expertise on the subject, so I'll just take your word for it.

Add all those up and you get...? Pretty basic math there. Clannad, Bakemonogatari, K-On, Madoka Magicka are among the best selling shows of all time. All moe. Even shows like Eva that are exceptions to the rule have fair amount of moe elements. Point is: moe sells.

The fans buying those shows (WHICH INCLUDES A LOT OF FEMALES) do so legitimately. A lot of people praising Free do so out of some bs double standard about fanservice or how they just want to praise anything that's not moe (even though the show is pretty much a lackluster moe show with skinny dudes). You see it everywhere if you spend any time at all on forums.

Erm, no she didn't. If we're talking about the same video here, she mentions straight away that she doesn't like crappy fanservice regardless of the target audience. She says she likes Free! because there's more to the show than just that, it's a genuinely good show regardless. She even mentions in the video that she didn't like Brothers Conflict (which aired at the same time as Free!), because there was nothing of value outside of the fanservice.

From what I heard golden eggs was very cheap and used a different business. But I will need to check the reason it always gets omitted. I'm rather forgetful.

In the sales community we tend to go by average.
By your system Free is sitting at 174k, with only half the amount of episodes clannad has.

Anime sales are not measured on individual disc sales, but average sales. For example, UtaPri2 v.1 sold 65K, but since it dropped in following volumes, its actual average is 35K-ish. If you add up all disc sales of course a lot of series are gonna come up with 100K plus individual sales (Free included, and of course it would top Clannad in that account too, with half the episode count) , but that's not the point. Clannad's average sales are 24K (and 19K for After Story), whilst Free has an average of 29K, so it sold more than Clannad. It's mind-boggling how you can't understand this simple mathematical fact

And you guys are only using preorder numbers. So:

1. Fujoshi demographic series tend to sell mostly DVDs. Therefore they need more sales overall to make the same amount of money.

2. Clannad sold really well after it got good word of mouth and didn't do that great initially. You're warping the figures to prove your biased viewpoints. Look up any objective figures.

3. Clannad sold really well in foreign (outside of Japan) markets. Those aren't being counted. Free S1, if it is so amazing, why hasn't it been licensed???
