The entire "idol" concept comes across as really skeevy to me, and throwing middle-schoolers into the milieu isn't doing it any favors.

Considering how large the industry is, and the AKB franchise as a whole ¥1000/hr seems like REALLY cheap labor considering the amount of work these "part-timers" will have to do, and the profits the company will make off of it.
I'm a professional photographer by trade, so I can appreciate the benefits of exposure early on in a career. I remember what that was like 30 years ago for myself with trying to get exposure. But, it seriously doesn't seem the pay-to-payoff is in the part timer's favor for how these girls are going to be exploited for profit. |
