Ep 23 spoilers: spoiler[Despite everything, I do feel sorry for Sylvia. The big mistake she made was taking out all her frustrations on "acceptable targets" like Ange and Riza. Ange's method was harsh, but at least deep down, she still loves her sister. Rather sweet moment between Ange and Hilda, with Ange accepting Hilda and telling her there's nothing wrong with who she is, which was surprising.

I was wondering, "hey, are they really gonna let that Ragna-mail go to waste?", and then Jill jumped into it, let rip and I got hyped. This was a nice set up episode and more than anything, I want to see the fight between Salia and Jill next week, it's been a long time coming. This is their moment to get everything out.

Jasmine taking command of the Aurora was awesome. Sucks to be the civilians caught up in the attack lol. Tusk was putting up a fight against Embryo so far, not bad but I'm kinda underwhelmed by Embryo's Ragna-mail's strength so far. I suppose he's not going all out just yet.]

Next ep's gonna be good stuff, I'm really looking forward to it.

@ Rogueywon

Good to know there is another Bioware fan. I tend to usually play a similar character through the games, Dusky the magic user who is paragon to a fault but ready to turn on someone who is dangerous, but then also mix it up with a totally different character afterwards. With how Ange has changed I really do wonder if I could insert such a character and plot character growth, something I don't think I have done much of.

Chances are it is purely by chance that I get this similar feeling, But I rather like the observation.

Is this a plot hole? How is spoiler[the Empire's navy functional without mana to run it? I would expect all the crew to be as dependent on it as the general populace. Remember the escape which ended up relying on Momoka's mana ability, then Momoka couldn't even control a car with out it.]

Not that I really care.

And it took this long for someone to kick Sylvia's butt into gear?

They've clearly got non-mana technology - Arzenal runs on it, after all. I'd kind of assumed that since their world has been so peaceful ever since Embyro rebuilt it, all of the military tech (beyond basic police stuff) predates mana anyway.

Episode 24.

Well damn that was good. I have to say I didn't think Embryo would have gotten so spoiler[nonplussed when he realized Tusk got Ange's cherry.] Although 3 days and nights? I don't remember that part maybe Tusk was stretching the truth a little there. Maybe it was the sissy pink mech.

Chris, you dolt. What a thick head.

I thought this was going to be a finale episode but I guess not. As apocalyptic anime battles go this one is actually pretty interesting although I don't get who it is the good guys are fighting. Are there actually any empire navy around to conduct the battle or is it all just AI or something?

He might have just been talking about their first meeting. Their actual sexy time was at least 12 hours.

But yeah, spoiler[it was funny seeing Embryo all butt hurt just like some otaku tend to be when their waifu sleeps with someone.]

Episode 24

Exciting episode, a lot of deaths too. Personally I took it the hardest that we had to see spoiler[so many Dragons get killed], while seeing one of the spoiler[betrayer girls get torn apart was kind of satisfying]. At this point I feel more sympathy for the giant spoiler[monster looking creatures than I do for the psychos trying to kill everything]. I was a little on the fence with spoiler[Chris, even up till the end she was killing some dragons], but I was playing some Bioware shortly before the episode, and I forgave some pretty brutal stuff.

And surprise Jill had a spoiler[really smart idea, she would freeze Embryo] which kind of feels obvious now. Bad news was spoiler[that he got out], good news was spoiler[that this revealed that his real body is in the mech]. Again it kind of feels obvious now.

I love it when anime wait until the very end or very far along to question a major part of it, and the preview did so by asking spoiler[what "cross" in Cross Ange meant]. At least by the subtitles it said it was spoiler[because Ange is usually cross]. Laughing

Don't tell me that... spoiler[panties] are going to save the day in spoiler[helping to find Ange]? Reminds me of one of my favourite lines in Sakurasou no Pet.

Episode 25 (Finale)

And so it ends. Waaah-waaah, my Sunday mornings are now going to be less spiritually fulfilling without the hijinks of the saucy Ange and her nympho friends.

Fav part of the finale? One, last epic spoiler[naked vage mash into Tusk's lucky face.]

I rated this trashy gem Very Good, which of course is a reflection of the entertainment value it bestowed upon me as opposed to an attempt to quantify its quality.

So long, Ange, I guess I'll only be seeing you in my dreams from now on ... *sniff*

So the end has come. Well I have got to say it was a very very satisfying ending. A real sense of closure for everyone. We got the answers to many of the mysteries of the series (such as why are Normas only females and so on... And no it's not because the authors hate women on the contrary Laughing ) . So many good lines spoken in this episode as well, so funny and self conscious as always. Very Happy
As for Embryo he ended up being a real human not an AI after all.

I will miss this series, it was such a breath of fresh air (bad animation and all). Salako and Ange singing the karaoke was priceless. Razz

Episode 25:

I must I'm satisfied with how the show wrapped up. The biggest thing to note is that we finally get spoiler[a (what I feel is the moral) explanation/reason as to why Norma are all women.] I feel that it's a good one which worked with everything that has happened and characters have had to face. This show which has used spoiler[sexual violence for control and manipulation to have it said straight that Norma are the result of the human genome itself rebelling against Embryo to give women the power of choice of how to live their lives, for me, puts everything that has happened into perspective. I'm actually glad they put the moral explanation behind the Norma in the last episode. Sure we got the scientific reason why Embryo had the populace subjugate them, but this moral reason is what we can take away from the show now that it's over. We can also see this as a variant of the the usual "evolution can't be stopped/controlled" theme other Sci-Fi has done before.

"Nature finds a way"]

Other notable points for me:
spoiler[Tusk REALLY IS invincible. Shot multiple times, slashed and stabbed, and after the battle still standing like it's nothing. Good thing Ange gave him her panties earlier, now she has something to put on.

Salia and Hilda had some good scenes, especially loved them gaining mastery over the Ragna-Mails.

Vilkiss' true final form need a little input from Tusk before hand. Now it looks less like Strike Freedom and more of an inverse Destiny (Destiny had red wings and a majority blue torso).

Alektra went out very classy, very Cowboy Bebop like (also Sunrise).

Salamandinay giving Tusk her sword.

Sylvia leading some of the survivors

I'm going to assume the one male dragon with Vivian's mother is her father (since he's red scaled). Since that would be very sweet if she actually took her to introduce him. I can just imagine Vivian going "papa you're big!" or something like that in her usual nature.]

All in all, I was very happy with how the series closed up, it's no where near a trainwreck, in fact the train arrived at it's destination intact.

Also the mechanic section of the website is updated if anyone is interested: http://crossange.com/mechanic/.

Needing to kill both parts of the final boss at the same time? I'm probably the only one here who knows where Fukuda took that from Laughing

It was a perfect conclusion for the show. It's definitely a series that gets a bad rep from people only seeing the first two episodes. It's a lot better than most assume and deserves a chance. Definitely nowhere near as bad as that other Sunrise show that just ended...

The character on the main page's also been updated.

Cross Ange, episode 25 end spoilers:

spoiler[The episode explains how Embryo managed to keep himself ageless for all those years. Embryo is pure sleaze, and I'm glad he got what was coming to him. Though, Ange destroying his Ragna-mail didn't feel as satisfying as it should've been, was hoping for a more bombastic and over-the-top finish. But it'll do. The Norma explanation was interesting; they were genetically disposed to go up against Embryo and choose their own path in life.

I never thought I'd end up saying this when I first started out, but I'm sad for Jill. She was an arsehole, but she redeemed herself and made a number of strides. To have her die, especially when she finally noticed Salia, was upsetting. But is was great to see Salia finally shake off her baggage and stand up to Embryo. And I love how Ange and co. berated him and pointed out how cynical he was.

I do love how selfish Ange is lol. "Hey, what about the other Earth?" "Eh, I don't care". She has every right to be. At least that Earth got saved, the people just have to learn how to survive on their own two feet, and they're in the capable hands of Sylvia. Was laughing at her wearing Ange's soldier gear and shooting people.

So, it ends well for the DRAGONs and the Norma, they make peace. I'm satisfied with the conclusion. Things to point out:

- A character voiced by Kuwashima in a Fukuda show didn't die

- During the karaoke, Ange was wearing what her voice actress was wearing on the cover of her album.

- The huge DRAGON next to Vivian's mum is apparently the husband/Vivian's dad, according to people looking through Fukuda's twitter. A few unexplained things though.

1) How did Jill and Maggie know about the inhibitors for the DRAGONs? What was the plant (I'm assuming it's the source for the inhibitors)?

2) How did Ange's mum know the Song? ]

For all the show's faults, I still enjoyed the hell out of it and I'm gonna miss it.

Episode 25

Even before watching the episode I knew how I was going to feel, and the word is "fulfilling". This was going to be the final clash of the themes and some awesome action of mecha fighting. The final group to help save Ange was spoiler[Tusk, Salia, Hilda, and Salamandinay], and yes action was good, Ange more than anyone can fight. We got reveals of Embryo's spoiler[origin as being the result of an experiment messing with space], and it seems he may have been the spoiler[one that really created the world ending event]. Special mention also for music, I have said it before but it reminds me of one of my favourite aspects of the show Symphogear.

And I must add the kind of funny moment of spoiler[Sylvia leading a team of survivors, and not helpless at all].

I have already said quite a lot about this series, I would say it is one of those shows that you really go on a massive journey as you see the characters grow and change. Checking the encylopedia page at the moments shows that there are some very divided ratings on this show, and some of the objectionable content is one aspect that can turn people off as really just mindless. But I felt that this show was actually often smarter than it let on, that is except for when it did the previews that rather than just be a character piece or talk about next episode, they instead took steps of saying how aware they were. I rate the show as Excellent, this has been an experience I have really enjoyed and has been fulfilling.

A very good ending, but based on the end where spoiler[a number of girls and one human guy are left to build a nation], I feel tempted to put ideas of a sequel series. A spoiler[nation is not going to last with such a small gene pool, even if they gained the technology and were able to alter genes enough of future generations], I don't feel entirely happy about it. If we suddenly took the route of perhaps a group spoiler[from another planet, dimension, or something that might move now that Embryo has gone], and making it a kind of reverse gender group could be interesting. There is room even if it is not needed to create more stories that could explore something totally different.

I just knew you would be the first to comment on that.

Talk about a spoiler[harem ending. Tusk ends up with an entire plentiful of women -- far beyond] the usual half-dozen.

And it's over...

And they didn't screw up the ending. I'd have liked it if they'd ended the fighting a little sooner and given us slightly more epilogue, but hey, you can't have everything.

spoiler[So Libertus succeeds and the Norma escape to Galt's Gulch... erm... the DRAGON world, while their original world looks pretty screwed. That's not an ending you see often in anime (Blue Gender kind of did it, but with a very different context). But really, as I've just hinted, the biggest vibe I was getting from that bit - and I'm not suggesting a deliberate reference in the slightest, just a coincidental parallel - was Atlas Shrugged. Which feels kinda fitting, really, as this has been a pretty conservative show in its ethos; it has a fairly bleak view of human nature, it shows the monetised and capitalist society in Arzenal as superior to the Star Trek-style socialism-of-plenty in the mana-world and it's big on "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps rather than begging for help".]

Lots of fun little touches. spoiler[I adore the angry/sarcastic/exasperated gestures Hilda's making in the background when Ange and Tusk are re-united on Vilkiss. If you missed those on first-viewing, go back and watch that scene again and ignore everything in the foreground. And Sylvia as a post-apocalyptic vigilante was an amusing and unexpected twist. Kinda surprised Misty didn't show up again - there were a few sightings of her in the eps leading up to the finale and she's one of the few non-Arzenal characters who wasn't completely hateful.]

Ah well, my favorite series of the last few years. I'd be going back to Madoka to find one I've liked to the same broad order of magnitude. Probably puts me in a small minority, but hey, these things are subjective.
