I've never seen a PreCure show so I decided to finally give the franchise a try since Crunchyroll is starting get more of them. I started with Futari wa which is the very 1st one, but dropped it because every episode I watched was torture. The leads didn't interest me and Mepple was annoying.
Then I tried Go! Princess and ended up watching the whole thing (50 episodes) in a few days. I'm definitely not the target audience, but I loved it! The characters, style, and especially the writing were very engaging. I wasn't expecting the show to actually treat the concept of following your dreams in a realistic manner. Tried Witchy and Kira Kira a la Mode and neither of them clicked for me. However, I'm enjoying the currently airing Wonderful Precure a lot. Of course the franchise has more shows, but Cruncyroll doesn't have them yet. I know I could find them if I put in the time. |

Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood (2018) Watched another 2018 show, so now I can claim to have watched 70 shows from 2018. So, whats this show about? This is a self aware criticism of aniota culture, where the main character is a 360-year-old vampire otaku who looks like a 13-year-old girl. Its not very well made but its intellectually sophisticated enough for me to find it interesting, and since its a metafictional moe show and I love moe shows, I rated it 7/10.
Kaleido Star (2003-2004) I have a weird relationship with this show. Sometimes it was really inspiring to the point it made me cry, other times I felt really bored trying to pay attention to it: the setting is not the kind I find the most interesting. If I had to describe Kaleido Star I would say its basically Aria but without the sci-fi elements, replacing it with sport-anime tropes, and a worse art style (I found the style of character designs just plain boring). Because of these issues, I am conflicted about rating it, because other shows that made me cry are 10s or at least 9.5s, but this one also had its boring moments: its great but it drags along sometimes. Still, I feel like I must give it 9.5/10, thanks to its exceptional emotional power: I will never forget watching it. Destiny of the Shrine Maiden (2004) A really bland mecha-yuri show. I would think it can be regarded as interesting only because its a mecha-yuri show and I haven't watched anything quite like it before, but it has nothing special in terms of execution going for it: its a perfectly mediocre 6/10 anime. The Aquatope on White Sand (2021) Watching this while watching Kaleido Star is quite shocking because the quality of the art of anime has improved amazingly over the past 20-25 years but its not so noticeable if you don't watch two shows made 20 years apart on the same day. This show is overall very well-made but pedestrian drama that features aquariums as their real main characters. Overall a solid 7/10 show, good but there are better anime shows out there. Gabriel Dropout (2017) (rewatch) As I noticed Nokotan was airing, I decided to revisit my favorite title from its director: Gabriel Dropout. There are good slice of life shows, like Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood, and there are truly great ones, like K-On!, Azumanga Daioh, Nishijou and Gabriel Dropout. Yes, Gabriel Dropout is good, really good, slice of life comedy show. In fact, its probably the best CGDCT show made in the last 10 years or so (since the genre declined in popularity from its peak around 2010):, and the overall visual style of Gabriel Dropout is really great: not overly detailed but still quite beautiful. I raise its rating to 9.5/10, making it one of the best anime shows from 2017, IMO the best year of anime over the past decade. Date a Live V (2024) So far, I rate this as the anime of the year for 2024. Yep, I haven't watched anything as good as this from this year so far. The Date a Live franchise is my favorite guilty pleasure since I watched its first season a decade ago, but in recent years its seasons are starting to become, like, actually really good dramatic anime. Its writing has been actually improving, and the fifth season is the best one by far. I also really liked the shows' current visual style: production values improved a lot between season 3 and 4 when it changed studios. Also, DAL features one of the greatest characters ever: Kurumi, IMO. 9/10 Gurren Lagann (2007) (rewatch) Rewatching this masterpiece made me remember the greatness of what the best anime can do. This is indeed one of the animes that make me love the artform, and there is nothing quite like it in the world (I would think the closest to it is the OVA Gunbuster from 1988): its a masterpiece of pure undiluted energy and conviction. Each second of the screen is oozing expressive artistic energy that has confidence and strength as each episode advances an epic plot that begins minimalistic and expands to the intergalactic scale. 10/10
As I said in my lost post in this thread, I loved re-watching Gurren Lagann one of my all time favorites, and I liked a lot Kill la Kill (an 8/10), so I guess I should watch this one, I heard about it but I didn't know it was by Hiroyuki Imaishi. So far, I loved everything that he has done that I watched. Last edited by Jose Cruz on Sat Sep 07, 2024 2:24 pm; edited 1 time in total |

There is no series discussion thread for Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin so I'm coming here to rave about it. Just caught up at episode 5. I thought Quality Assurance in Another World was my favourite new show of the season, but I do believe Sakuna has edged it out. The characters are incredibly engaging and episode 5 got me right in the feels. It's beautiful to look at, too and I like the humour.

Anybody is welcome to start a new discussion thread when one doesn't exist. You don't even have to add all the fancy opener stuff. If I see that it needs it, it only takes me a few minutes to edit. Anyway, here ya' go . |

Thanks, Tony! I know anybody is allowed to do it but you see I suffer from a very serious disease: lazyassitis. Sadly, there doesn't appear to be a cure...

I'm rewatching Gosick, but only during meals and downtime to give my eyes a rest.
I don't suspect I'll be checking anything new out in a while, either. Call it quasi-burnout, or just lack of interest |

After finishing my rewatch of Oregairu, I found myself getting back to an anime I thought I wouldn't get back into: Date A Live. Date A Live has never been like good, but dumb and fun enough to be enjoyable. 3rd season changed that with pacing so awful that it made me completely lose interest in the series. More seasons of Date A Live come and go, but I had no reason to watch them so I ignored all of it. Until now.
I dunno why, but I just felt like getting back into the silly harem antics of Date A Live and picked it back up with season 4. I ignored the movies and Kurumi spin-offs. Finished season 4 and then continued with the 5th season, and finished that one too. Watching these last two seasons of Date A Live I remembered what I sort of liked about the series. Like the girl who only says "That's so lame" and the dates with Kotori and co. giving dating advice to the main character by voting on a selection of responses. The action and drama is lame but passable. All in all I had fun and the great thing is that season 5 brought the whole story to a satisfying conclusion. |

As part of my preparation to watch the third season of Kimi ni Todoke, I've started to rewatch the first two seasons. Chewed through the first six episodes of season 1 quickly. My god, I love this show. Sawako is such an endearing character, you can't help but love her. The first season is definitely the best, but the second is still very much worth watching, too.

Oddly I remember liking the first season of Kimi ni Todoke, but couldn't get into the second season at all. I don't remember there being anything wrong about the 2nd season, I just wasn't vibing with the 2nd season like I was with the first. I think I might have liked the second season if I had been able to jump straight into it after watching the first, but there was like a couple year gap between those seasons. I guess during that time the story had lost its momentum in my head and it just became impossible to rekindle that momentum and interest by trying to watch the continuation by relying on vague memories of the first season instead of just starting from the beginning again.

Note: I completely deleted my original post about Kimi ni Todoke because I made some comments based purely on memory and my recent rewatch of the material showed me how off base those comments were, and I didn't want to mislead other posters. So suffice to say I've been super enjoying the rewatch as I did the first time around.

KNT is one of the few where I bought the rest of the manga series to figure out what else happens.
The rest of it goes too long and hopefully the anime can fix the pacing, because the story it tells is good (not as good as the first or second parts, but good). Definitely a holding pattern for Kazuya and Sadako. At points in the anime and more often in the manga Kazuya tells Sadako something like "You don't know me, I'm not as wonderful as you think I am." Hinting at something possibly dark. If you're watching the 3rd season for this, I think I should spoil something. spoiler[He's an angsty teen with father issues, he really is as nice as he seems, there was never any good reason for him to quit baseball. Absolutely nothing comes from this other than some mild pouty strife with daddy.] Sorry. |

I guess it's true that when I more closely examine the fragments of memory I have of the show, I vaguely remember the second season having this feeling of "lacking impact". I can certainly accept the explanation that the second season just wasn't as good instead of younger me having poor memory. |

I just recently started watching the Mobile Police Patlabor TV series after seeing the first couple of OVA episodes and first movie thirty some-odd years ago. It's always been on my watch list along with the rest of the OVAs and two other films, so I figured it was time to actually get around to watching it.

Rewatched A Place Further Than the Universe. It's one of very few anime I've rated as Masterpiece here on ANN. This anime is exceptional. The direction and the writing is phenomenal. While the broad strokes of the story are good, I feel like where the show really shines is in the moment to moment. The great chemistry between the characters, the good sense of comedy and comedic timing and nice pace means the show never drags and is constantly fun to watch. Episode 12 still made me teary-eyed.
If I had criticism for the show I'd say it's just a tiny bit too heavy-handed in some of its emotional moments. I think the biggest criticism I can muster is the whole bit about Mari's friend Satan, who walks the Earth in a fleshly form under the name Megumi. It's not badly written, just felt like a detour that I wasn't as invested in. Regardless, one of my favourite anime ever that leaves you with a kind of feeling to want to do something. Anyway, I dropped the rating from masterpiece to excellent. I also recently managed to finally finish An Archdemon's Dilemma - How to Love Your Elf Bride which I had been watching very slowly on the side for months. Just kinda lame all-round. Not much I can say about it other than it was just kinda boring. Gave it a so-so rating. |
